    Be Still

Two projects completed Monday, December 9th. The pattern is by Keith Fenton and purchased from Sheila Landry's website some time ago. One is made from 1/2" Hard Maple and the other 1/2" Cherry backed with 1/4" Baltic Birch plywood stained black. Both are 8" x 12". I used the new Pegas Scroll Saw at ArtCrafters with Pegas #3 MGT blades on all interior cuts and FD Polar #5 blades on the perimeter. The finish is two coats spray Shellac. Comments welcome,

  5. Just finished this word art piece which Brenda was kind enough to do a rush job on it so I can get it delivered Thursday. Just needs a couple more coats of lacquer on it and it's done. I just want to give Brenda a big shout out for doing this so quick. Just don't know how you can do these so quick. Thanks again. Ralph.

  7. A couple of the ones I have finished. The letter/napkin holder is an H. Botas pattern I simplified slightly and is made from BB. The sign is for my BIL in Texas. It is made from cedar with a pine backing. Finish on both is spray can poly.

  9. Hi I asked for help finding a scroll saw to cut metal with and some asked to see more of my work so I figured an introduction would be a good place to do that. I am a metal sculptor. Been working with metal in one form for a little more than 20 years now. My Dad was a metal worker and also did sculptures as a side hobby and side job, guess that’s where I got the bug and hopefully the genes. Here are a few of my sculptures You can see more on my website at www.patricelemee.com I hope you guys (and gals) like it and a great big thanks once again for all your help. Patrice

Had a good time feeling productive .these are all 1/2" plywood which was within arms lenght to fetch while sitting in the chair.rattle can paint ,,scoll reverse blades (FD).the paper pictures were a pain with white glue as the glue dryed way to quick before I could position it

    Dewalt switch

I never replaced mine, but as soon as I installed a foot switch, I turned the switch to the “on” position and covered it with packing tape and left it in the on position for ever after, as there was no reason to ever turn it off.

Great cutting but the matting and frame really set it off. Do you make your own frames?

  19. This is the final pattern for my Micah 6:8 plaque. I poster several earlier versions some time ago. After I finished the scrolling I debated endlessly (procrastinated) about the finish. With so much time invested I really wished I had a tried and true finish method. I finally decided to use Danish Oil and Lacquer. I read that this works well provided you allow the Danish Oil to dry for at least 4 days. I waited a week and applied 8 coats of spray lacquer. The Lacquer was wet sanded with 320 grade wet-or-dry to knock down any high spots and eliminate dust nibs. I followed this with 600 grade wet or dry. I finished with an extremely light wet sand with 2000 grade wet or dry and a light buff with grocery bag paper. I chose not to glue the plaque on the backer board until it was complete. This allowed me to rinse the sanding slurry out of the lettering. The areas on the back of the Cherry that were to be glued to the backer board were masked off before I applied Danish oil. These areas were matched with the same masking pattern on the backer board before spaying the letter portions of the backer board with flat black lacquer I wiped the plaque dry and blew any remaining water from the letters with compressed air and let it dry overnight before gluing it to the backer board. I also put 2 "insurance" screws through the backer board and into the Cherry (just in case). I did not need to use any wax on the face of the plaque. I think I have found my tried and true finish! It is now ready to be wrapped and gifted to a dear friend.

  20. Two of the Christmas presents framed and ready to go (Superman and WonderWoman), as well as a first-attempt at intersecting wordart. Of course, me being me, I couldn't opt to start with something like "Cat" or "Dog"....lots of tiny details and thin lines, had to re-glue the hole in the "6" where the bridge broke. But, the wife likes it, so that's all that matters, yes? Friday was our 16th anniversary. I was hoping to get this done before Friday, since I had last week off (two and a half days off due to Thanksgiving, plus 5 days of vacation time, makes for a GREAT time off! Lotsa sawdust generated.) but I was busy finishing up the rest of the Christmas gift cuts, and spending time with the wife (poking holes in targets from a distance is always good!).

  21. I'm not stating it is not nice, or helpful to have some of the information, I'm just saying it is up to the individual what info they want to share... They should not be required or feel it is mandatory or feel pressured to provide it. Just my opinion... I'm not a bad guy, I just am sort of private and I respect other that are also. It is not a bad thing, nor a good thing, it is just a thing... I often look at a persons profile to see what info they provide, just curious of location, often I like to know and use a persons real first name, and age, but if they don't provide it,,,, no biggie.

    Treating Cedar

if im using cedar- or other woods that blotch- and its going to be stained, i spray it with mineral spirits first. allow the MS to soak in then apply the stain. on cedar, if im just applying a clear topcoat, many times i will apply a 50/50 mixture of BLO/MS. allow that to dry then apply the clear. that helps the clear not soak in so and less coats for good coverage

  24. only thing that comes to my mind is.. where to get supplies locally.. I see many asking where to purchase the full 5x5 sheets of BB ply.. lot's of folks also order it online.. But it's quite pricey getting it all chunked up into those 12 x 12 or 12 x 24 pieces.. then the shipping.. It cost me $12 a sheet..

Ever since Kevin posted on how to make his beeswax/mineral oil concoction, I have been using that on all wood species, then top coating with lacquer.

    Dewalt switch

Edward, I’m like you, I have never used a foot switch because of the way I sit. The DeWALT switch is not sealed. Dust gets into it and fouls up the contacts. Like was mentioned, most folks use a foot switch, but for you and me, we have to deal with the switch. You will not find the switch at the Hardware store or any store. you will have to order it from DeWALT or wherever you order parts from. That being said, I have always repaired my switch’s. If you are a handy kind of guy, you can do it too. Let me know what you want to do, and I’ll walk you through it.

    Treating Cedar

I spray (not rattle can) three coats of pre catalyzed lacquer. First coat really gets sucked up. Soft maple is about the same. Works good for me.

  32. This Charles Dearing Gandalf pattern took a while. I cut it out of 1/2” African Rosewood, backed in cherry. The Rosewood is all natural color wise, but I did darken the cherry behind the wizard. I also didn’t like all of the space over his staff so I did an Eagle inlay to break it up a little. This will probably be my last major scrolling on my Dewalt 788 as I got my new Pegas in a couple of days ago.

    Kid Friendly Finishes

I agree with Dan that the bigger safety question is the size of the puzzle pieces. Look for patterns for simple puzzles, with only 3 or 4 pieces, that are large enough not to pose a choking hazard. As for a finish, for that age of child, I would opt for no finish. Just use a hardwood, with a tight, close grain, such as maple, and leave them unfinished. Not that the finish is a hazard. Like Dan said, all wood finishes, sold in the USA, are non-toxic, once fully cured, so you don't really have to worry about it. It's just that there really isn't much benefit to be gained by putting a finish on a puzzle for a 1 to 3 year old child. If you want to use something, I suggest shellac.

    Treating Cedar

If I'm staining wood. I sand it as needed and then, nearly always, seal it with a couple of light coat of shellac. It dries in under an hour. Then give the shellac a light sanding. I've been tempted to try Minwax Sanding Sealer or the Conditioner but haven't been able to get my wallet open.
