  1. Back a couple years or so ago, @Rolf and @NC Scroller Scott had shared about getting some copies of the German scroll saw magazine, Feinscnitt, and doing some patterns from them. I liked several of the designs from a couple of editions and ordered two different ones with Christmas designs in them. Knowing no German, I was going to have to go on pictures alone. I have looked at them from time to time, bit hadn't tried to make any of them until now. There are still several I want to try but I did get around to cutting these out of 1/4" BB ply and then using the Unicorn Spit stains on them that I bought a while back. (Yes, I am a gotta have it and then procrastinate type person.) LOL Here is what I finally got done. Several others I want to try from them too. Wish they had a "translated version" of the magazine, or that they could work with SSWC to put some of their articles in SSWC as they have some really beautiful things in their magazine - maybe I just need to learn German. I hear my husband's family's surname is maybe of German origin. (Have also heard not too though.) This is the magazine's home location: https://www.feinschnitt-kreativ.de - everything is as should be expected in German but with the help of Google translator and a bit of time, I was able to order the copies I did. There are more from the two I want to do, we will see if I get anymore done from them this year. I have been playing "clean up" on several projects I had started and have had laying around as well as cutting a few new ones like these this past week so I will try to post a few more photos of some other items this week maybe.

I did this one from a piece of cherry my brother gave me. I'm gonna give it to him for Christmas. I showed him a little at Thanksgiving on my scroll saw, he's bought a used saw and gonna give it a try. If I counted right there is 120 cuts on the outside and 54 on the inside. Total time was probably 4 hours. I finished it with 321. It's about 3/8" thick and I cut it with a # 1 FD. Thanks for looking.

  3. Santa for us and the Jeep ornament for some friends. Thanks to Birchbark for the pattern! Two others made patterns that I will also cut out in a few days, Gordon and multitom. I appreciated them all! I should have painted the tires black. Actually, I shouldn't have painted it all at, but the friends like all of their vehicles red.

    Ornament Exchange Tree

Every year I exchange hand made Scrollsawn Christmas ornaments with others. This year I exchanged ornaments with two members, one from the U.K. and one from Australia. I like to set up a small tree on a shelf on the landing of our staircase. I decorate it with all the exchange ornaments I have received over the years. This is this year’s rendition.

  6. Had a customer recently who has a GrandPa who plays fiddle and she wanted something different as a gift for him. So I came up with this little piece, which see enjoyed receiving. I cut the sign from cherry and the base, as usual, was cut from the off cut of the sign. Rounded over the edges and glued it to a darker piece of teak to make a nice display. Not sure if any of you can use it, but here it is.

    First puzzle completed.

First puzzle done. When cutting it I was using fd ultra reverse size 3 in 3/4 popular. Compared to my other items I had to crank the speed up used to be cutting around a quarter inch stuff. Also I am not sure if I should be using an ultra reverse blade here or not. The pieces fit nice together but when moving there is a little slop between the pieces or are all puzzles this way?

    Show Over

Had a great season even though we had one show cancel at the last minute. We did 4 Crafts Fairs and brought in a little over five thousand for the season. Our best yet even being one short. Still working on some special order but soon I will be able to take a break and then back to work for next year.

  10. I can see these boxes as maybe a candle or light holder, maybe even something to put remotes in. Who knows. Wife wanted me to make them as a Christmas gift for her mother. Pretty cool!

  11. I came across this video the other day so I checked it out. I have always needed a good quality square and I was just too cheap to buy one. But after seeing this, I knew that I had to have it. The price is more than fair and the quality is outstanding. Check it out and see what you think. I'm not affiliated in any way with this company. Just passing along a great product. I ordered it and had it in 3 day. So there is enough time to get one for a stocking stuffer. I did buy this size but they have other sizes and other tools too. And the best part, "MADE IN THE U.S.A."

    Reindeer

I finally completed these yesterday. These are a Sheila Landry design. Easy to cut, lots of sanding and most difficult of all for me was getting them attached to the rockers. They are made of cherry and there is a very small gluing area (just at the small hooves). I use Titebond, nope, epoxy, nope, Clear Gorilla glue nope and CA glue. What finally worked was the combination of Gorilla Glue and CA glue. A second problem with the gluing there was no way to clamp them with the clamps I have. I had to dream up ways to use weights. The one with the held up leg, I had to use pins along with gluing. May have to go back and add pins to the other, they are fragile. They are around 6" long and 6" high.

  17. Hi folks... I have been working my tooch off lately these past few days. Since pictures of my work went up on Facebook I haven't stopped. I have already "sold" 4 other pieces and have 2 more ready to go. At present, another Sue Mey crescent moon/Merry Christmas piece is being cut. Time is getting short which is making me feel that I may have to stop taking any more orders. The fun part (yeah, right.) is about to begin. I've decided to do the painting on a few pieces at a time. My Mrs. let me know that she's selling them for $10.00 a piece. Hmmm... I couldn't believe it when my phone rang this morning and someone ordered 2 Noel/candle pieces... for next year!!!

  18. And not a moment too soon... I'm beat... I'm fried... I'm DONE! My last event today was mediocre which kind of summed up the year. Sales $$$ were down 12% this year compared to last year. 2019 - 943 puzzles sold at 24 events 2018 - 1072 puzzles sold at 20 events I started hearing more and more at events "We bought 2 of your puzzles last year and we love them!" Great to hear, but no additional sale. That's why I started doing the key/leash holders and I look forward to really showcasing them next year after test marketing them the past month. I'll stockpile puzzles over the winter as usual and will also make a decent quantity of the popular dog breeds as leash holders to have on hand at events. Anyway, a solid year for a "hobby" business. I have some final orders to cut the next couple of days, then I'm DONE DONE! Merry Christmas to all. Especially my puzzle zombies out there.

    Tilt Saw or Not

I don't have a 'stand' for my saw, it's bolted to my workbench but I do have a piece of 2x 4 under the back edge. It's personal preference as to which way it's done. I sit at my saw and like the 'tilt'

  20. We hear that same line or similar at ArtCrafters. “You have a wonderful store with lots of unique works.” And then they walk out the door.

    Tilt Saw or Not

I have a Hegner and have tilted it by raising the back leg about an inch. I find it easier for me. There is no right or wrong way but find a position that you like by trying a coup!e different ones.

Thanks everyone. My brother is the one who told me about the 321. It is 3 parts mineral spirit, 2 parts polyurethane and one part Boiled linseed oil. It dries really fast and I found using satin finish wasn't what I wanted in the end so I switched to semi gloss and it comes out pretty nice. I have read articles on sanding the first coat in to the wood but I don't know if it would do anything for it. I've never tried it. I use a second coat right after the first one soaks in and wiping away the excess. I never make more than 3 oz. of mineral spirit, two oz. of poly and one oz. of BLO I'll never use it fast enough. I always use rubber gloves too, wiping it on with a cloth or using a brush.

  25. My sales for the year are also at an end. I tried selling beside a Christmas tree sales place that a friend has but the sales were dismal. Not enough traffic to make it work for me. His tree sales are good though. I'll not try that next year. My gross sales for this year were within 2% of last years sales. Not my highest years, but just fine with me. I also started making toys 12 years ago and selling them. After two years, I started making boxes and still sell 160-200 of them a year. Well over 2000 now. Almost all of my sales are bought for gifts and people tell me that they are well received so they buy more to give to others. I get a lot of repeat business that way. I also offer something new each year and that helps with sales total. Lately I am tired of making boxes with inlay so tomorrow I plan to start making more toys. Toys to donate because I sell few. I will do that about a week and then likely I will go back to making boxes, or whatever I can dream up. I am cutting my hours in my shop from 35 to about 20 per week. Getting old I guess.

  26. That is the reason I first started selling toys all those years ago. I was using the toy-making as a therapy of sorts and after awhile the shed and house looked like Santa's work shop. The War Office suggested we get a stall at the local monthly markets and away we went.

    Tilt Saw or Not

I finally got my stand put together on my new saw and it’s on the mobile base I made with shelfs. My old saw sat level but I see and hear a lot of individuals that tilt there saw down in front with the back elevated. Before I mount it to the top, I was just wondering how many folks have there saw tilted in the front and if it’s that much better than just level. And what are the benefits of having it tilted?

    Tilt Saw or Not

I sit and no tilt. I only stand to scroll if the piece is too large to spin and my body gets in the way. All these people that tilt, do you tilt that smart phone that everyone is looking down at these days.?? I predict that that will become an injury that lawyers will be claiming soon. We will see commercials for it to join a class action suit against phone makers.

    Tilt Saw or Not

Add one more to the tilt group, my ex21 sits on a 2x4 and I have no issue with it vibrating off the stick. I did take the rubber feet off the metal legs first though.

    Ornament Exchange Tree

Really nice idea. I cut an ornament to commemorate something that happened that year. Like the year the wife got her knee replaced, I cut an ornament with the x-ray view of the new knee and the year below it. They hang on our tree, sometimes two or three per year like her back surgery and my heart failure

    Peg board game

Thank you Marge, I hadn’t played either until we took the grand kids out to eat on Thanksgiving and they had this on the tables for customers to play. It was fun. There mother was in the hospital and dad was with her is why we didn’t have the normal family dinner. After dinner we went to the hospital and they were able to see mom after 3 days of ICU. She is now home and doing much better.

    Dewalt switch

I didn't like the foot switch a first either... until I found that the lower brace of the DW stand was the perfect spot to put the switch.. But to answer your question.. I think you'll need to order the switch.. unless you modify the area for a different switch.. When you get your new switch if that's how you like it... After installing it.. get a piece of rubber / latex style glove cut the fingers off ( don't use the table saw for this... scissors will work well ) and cut out a section of the palm area big enough to cover the switch.. tape it on with some masking tape.. This will keep out the dust and prolong the switch... When the glove wears out... make a new one..

    My First Sale!!!

Thanks all for the encouragement...much appreciated!!! The reason I say that I'm "technically" a newb is because I got my saw 7 years ago. However, about a month after getting it all the problems in my life began. Lost my mom, mom-in-law, brother in-law and dad within a 5 year span. And then there were the 5 surgeries I had on my foot. So even though I have had the saw it was virtually not used over all that time. I have discovered just how much fun it is to scroll. There has been a few chunks of firewood along with some better stuff over the past 3 weeks. I've been watching a lot of videos which have helped tremendously. /Oscar
