    Door Topper

I’ve been wanting to try one of the door toppers from The Wooden Teddy Bear. Finally pulled the trigger and did this one from Clark Weeks. This was a lot of fun and interesting to do. It’s my first try of cutting a project longer than my scrollsaw neck (32” and Delta 20”) and it really had me adjusting on the fly. There was a discussion earlier if we preferred cutting clockwise or counter-clockwise. I generally go clockwise but got a lot of practice reversing field. Lot of mistakes letting the blade move while stepping around the long end to cut from a different angle. More than once I’d catch my shirt on the board. Started turning the saw off an on until I got in position. Also, since I was standing to the side most of the time, when I thought the blade was lined up on my pattern line it was actually angled a little off but I just slowed my feed until I was lined up. I used 1/4” BB. Still need some staining practice. Used 2 coats of Walnut stain and 2 of minwax poly satin with light sanding but I think I rush the finishings too much because I want to see a finished project. Decided not to use a backer and let the wall be a contrast when it’s up. Still pretty happy with how it turned out and plan to do the Easter one later on. Sorry to be long-winded, just typing away while watching the game.

  2. This pattern is by Mahendra. He did an amazing job with a very complicated pattern. Thank you so much @multitom. I tweeked a couple of bits but not much. It was NOT an easy pattern to cut and I certainly will not be cutting it again. I used 2.5mm Bamboo and it measures 11.7" x 16.5", for the Aussies out there it's an A3 size. Marg

  10. Getting my equipment unpacked for my “winter shop”. I was presently surprised that I have more room than I thought! Off to the right of the picture are a full size washer and dryer for the wife, and a frig. for the beer...lol. Still about 5-6 ft from the saw to the double door, and several plugins! Even an A/C...as it’ll be 80* on Christmas Day! Chair/stool shopping tomorrow and I’ll start cutting! Probably going to do several puzzles as they go quickly and there are a bunch of craft shows down here.

  12. In my book, the only caddie is now a Hegner. There is no way I would pay the big money for any saw that did not provide caddie service! I feel if they don't provide the service, then why be in the business. Just my opinion. Nothing against the Hawk saw, I always wanted one, but part of the price for me is paying for a service level also.

  14. Something to remember with these saws.. is.. they rarely need parts.. how many blade holders you think they sell or would need to sell a year... it's a simple part.. but it's also a 20 year old saw... How many other scroll saw companies you suppose that still offer parts for a 20 year old saw? They've had at least 2 new models of these saws since the Ultra style saws was made.. The blade holders are different on these newer saws.. When I ordered blade holders for my 1993 saw they took forever and I was complaining about it on either here or another site and someone mentioned to me about how it was the old round clamps.. and they make them as ordered because they rarely sell those clamps anymore.. the cost of materials and machining time, not to mention shelf space for the day someone needs a clamp that maybe every 5 years someone will order one.. isn't cost effective to have sitting around.. Now this is still not right to have to wait it out so long I suppose.. but on the other hand.. I'm just thankful they still support parts these old saws.. Only other saw brand I've seen support parts for older saws is Hegner.. Excalibur no longer sells parts for the older style saws.. Heck delta doesn't support a 5 year old saws parts.. yet they somehow warranty them for 5 years LOL ...

  16. All the kids are agog about the Ice Princess in "Frozen" so I though a nice little plaque for a child's room would be right in order. I used 1/4" birch ply to cut out the sign and then sprayed it with white paint and covered it with shiny dust to make it look like a cold snowy object. I then painted a backboard arch which I improvised. The sign part was glued to the board using a couple of 1/4" pieces of ply to give it a 3D effect. You could put one of those sawtooth picture hooks on the back to make this a wall plaque, but I chose to put it on a plate stand. I got the plate stand from Steve Good's site, if you are interested in this method. Might make a nice gift for a little one in your life . Pattern available free on my Free Pattern Page

  17. You should probably sell it Ray, and sooner than later.. Once word gets around about the way they sell parts for these old saws.. or if / when they fold up the doors.. who's gonna want to buy it? You're not happy with is so move it on.. But more importantly.. I bet no more than you use the saw.. You'll never need to worry about buying parts anyway.. I have rebuilt the whole very old Hawk 220VS and did many upgrades to that saw.. Put about $250 into that saw.. paid $100 for the thing.. I production cut with it for 1.5 years before buying the brand new old stock 226 Ultra.. No hours on it.. Run it production cutting for another 1 - 1.5 years before buying the brand new BM-26.. I doubt I'm going to need to worry about parts for a few more years.. as there is no wear at all on the main wear parts.. and I actually do oil my machine as stated in the manuals...

  18. JT exactly what parts do you need for the saw. i read that it was clamps, and yes the clamps have changed. it sounds like you need the front cam that holds the front tension lever. you can cheat and buy you some time and file a flat on there. it is my understanding the edges get rolled over or rounded. it is no fun at all waiting for parts, but bushton will come through. may take some time. most of the parts that wear out like would not be that difficult to make, if you had a small metal lathe and mill. another member on here tried to get bushton to supply unthreaded blade holders so he could use the dewalt/excalibur style thumb screws. he never got an answer as far as i know. i made him a set in 1/4-20 to try out. my point is there are not really a ton of parts to wear out on that saw. if anything goes wrong on my hawk i would rather tear it apart than my 788. been there done that! bushton will come through for you.

  19. i think part of the problem is Bushton is a small company and like most small companies alot depends on outside vendors. dont think it is right that it has taken this long but you should have been informed about the wait. or if you dont like the wait time get a refund. i am sure a local machine shop would be more than happy to make a few clamps for you, you WILL NOT like the price it costs. it is really not that complex of a part to make by the looks of it. it is all set up time on equipment to make it. i for one went from a dewalt 788 to a BM20 and it was a big learning curve. my main thing is i did not like the clamps. i was used to the dewalt/excalibur style thumb screw with the rotating inserts. after making new clamp knobs with inserts like the dewalt i would not trade that saw for anything. i am glad i kept the BM20 saw.

  25. Not saying it's right.. but it is for real.. You show me another brand of scroll saw that still supports the parts for a 20+ year old saw... Hawk and Hegner do.. Hawk makes their parts as ordered for these older saws.. ( But I agree.. It shouldn't take 3 months.. maybe a couple weeks.. then again.. be thankful they still make the parts at all.. maybe they should just say.. we no longer make those instead of making one wait a few months.. much easier to not support these older saw parts like the others do.. ) Hegner never really changed much so parts for old saws are the same thing so still stocked.. I had a Delta SS350.. was only 5 years old and the blade clamps was obsolete.. as well as the power on / off switch.. A ryobi that was only 1 year old that the power switch was NLA.. A Dremel that the rear rod between the arms broke 1.5 years old NLA.. so as I said.. Hard to say how many saws they sell... Last year they told me my saw was #57th that was ordered at Christmas time.. which is why it took me 3 months to get it.. there was 57 people in front of my order.. since I ordered after Christmas but before the new year..

  27. If you have the prestain already, get a piece of scrap BB and try it. Make several samples and try different stains. This is the best way to find out what you want to do. I do this sometimes, and find it works pretty well. Tom

  28. I would suggest Hegner. Price may be high but at least you have service and a quality saw that will last for years.

  30. I had two Hawks, a 16" and a 20" Both were wonderful saws. I sold the 16" and moved up to a 220vs Ultra. I sold the 20" when I found a $100 14" Hegner and a 18" Hegner for $300. The real reason of getting rid of the Hawk is the large footprint. My two Hegners take up less floor space than one 20" Hawk. As far as cutting goes both brands cut and functioned equally well. The three legged stand on the Hegner is a selling point for me. Fits so nicely into a corner.

  31. ALWAYS....use a small piece and do a trial!!!! I sand to 220 and wipe clean. I think plywood of any kind can be difficult to stain. The opposite side of plywood often stains differently and finishes differently. They are typically from different grades of ply. Do any testing on the same side as the one you want to look good.

  42. Sometimes it will look splotchy if you do not pre treat it. They sell stuff that you just brush on and wipe off to pre treat, Think its called pre conditioner or something like that. If it is not bug deal I just brush the stain on with a disposable foam brush and wipe it off with some paper towels. could not be simpler. of course, use some gloves or something because that stuff is watery and will get everywhere if you let it.
