What is Fretwork?
stoney and 8 others reacted to bandaideman for a topic
IMHO Fret work is when you go to work sawing on thin wood making several inside cuts and you clench the butt tightly fretting it will break at any minute.9 points -

I was of the impression that "fretwork" meant predominantly interior cuts. But, I guess if you go back far enough it would mean anything cut with a fret saw. I proclaim that from this day forward, when we say "fretwork" we all mean that it's interior cuts using pre-drilled entry holes. I have spoken!4 points

New to scrolling but not to woodworking
amazingkevin and one other reacted to Gary Rider for a topic
Hello everyone, I have been wood working for years but my wife wants items that are done more and more with a scroll saw. Well I did not have one, (correction- she had one many years ago- craftsman with pin in blades) So I told her I needed a scroll saw of good quality. Well she purchased the King 21" saw on sale at woodcraft for Christmas. Since then I have been scouring the internet for beginner tips in scroll sawing and thankfully You tube has several video's just for beginners. I will be looking for patterns, tips from day to day and hopefully some day I can contribute to the forum.2 points -
What were your last and first cut ?
amazingkevin and one other reacted to OzarkSawdust for a topic
What was the last thing you cut in 2019? What is the first thing you cut in 2020? I cut the Basset yesterday afternoon. I cut the Beagle and Rescue dogs this morning. Now off to new years dinner and cocktails at some friends house, may not be able to cut any more today...lol. Making sawdust in 2020 !2 points -
Dust Collection
OCtoolguy and one other reacted to Sycamore67 for a topic
There have been several recent threads about dust collection/air filters with widely different viewpoints. I posted a couple of links that had actual data Box Fan Air Filter DIY Box Fan Filter Both of these show actual data on how these box fan filters work. One thing that I noted is that it takes quite a while for them to filter the air. During that time, you will be breathing the dust. I really wanted to try to answer some questions for myself about how well collecting dust at the source works to improve air quality. That is, collecting it above and below the table on the scroll saw. I looked for some meters to measure the dust levels. The best one out there is a Dylos meter but these start at around $200. There is some very good information about shop dust collection and measurement on the Australian Woodworking Forum. They also mention in some of the posts a cheaper alternative. While not as accurate, it will work to show relative differences in PM1.0, PM2.5 and PM10. I ordered the following one on ebay and when it comes will try doing some tests. They run about $40.2 points -
Rust
Gene Howe and one other reacted to savethebeer for a topic
Just spent 15 minutes wiping oil into the pillar and the chuck and later I'll take the vacumn into the hard to reach corners of the shop and look for any more evidence of neglect. I had promised myself that this year I would actually decorate the rest of the house and buy some good furniture, but this is way toooo important to leave to chance.2 points -
Thanks for the responses.2 points

I know you folks are probably getting bored with my pics but I just thought I'd put up a couple more to start the year off. I'm making a bowl/basket/centerpiece for our dining table and I'm really having a hard time getting it done with all the end of year interruptions by my partner in life. Anyway, tomorrow, I'm going to set up my table saw and cut the blanks for the top, bottom and 2 center holders for these 20 side panels. Each one of these represents almost an hour of cutting. The hard part now is figuring out the circumference for those pieces so that all 20 of these will fit. In between doing these, I had to do 8 more for a votive holder gift that I showed the other day. I'll soon be able to post pics of a finished piece. I hope anyway. Thanks for your patience.1 point

Rust
OCtoolguy reacted to savethebeer for a topic
Last Year (yesterday) I went into the shop and something caught my eye that I hadn't noticed before, despite being in the shop 5 to 7 days a week for years. Whatever way the winter sun was coming through the window I realised the pillar of my pillar drill was rusty, then I noticed the chuck itself was also rusty. Then I started looking closely at everything and so far no more rust visible. All my tools, belt sander, bandsaw, and the drill are all tabletop ones so all reasonably small. The drill was bought new 3 years ago and is used every day I'm in the shop. I use a heater when its cold, and a dehumidifier, and a fan at other times and none of my patterns have ever gone all wavy sitting on the shelf nor have any wood gotten damp so this rust was a suprise. Anyone come across rust affecting their tools within the motor/machinery? I'm loathe to start removing panel and covers just on the off chance. Bob1 point -
Dust Separator Can

I don't use a 2nd bucket either - just the one 5 gal - works for me as it's part of rolling cart I made to move the shop vac and the DD around the shop as needed1 point -
You are right eagle eyes! Looking further, there does not appear to be a thumb screw on the upper clamp, but the arms look like EX and DeWalt arms so the clamps could be replaced.1 point

I bought that too but never used the second bucket or the wheels. Save some money and just buy the basic kit. $50 or so. I'm using the second bucket on my other system but like I said, I'm going to change to a 3 gallon bucket. I still haven't found a used for the wheels.1 point -
Dust Collection
OCtoolguy reacted to JTTHECLOCKMAN for a topic
What would probably be interesting to see is if you have both vac setup and fan setup, take a reading near your face as you are scrolling using your natural form and seat placement. May take another set of hands. Then eliminate one setup at a time and do the test. Being we are talking scrollsaws.1 point -
Well, considering the motor is the same color as the compressor, and the compressor pulley is lined up with the motor, it’s still a tough call. Regardless, I still would pass on it.1 point

Advice/info
OCtoolguy reacted to Bill WIlson for a topic
That's what I first thought. I looked at that picture several times and it seems for all the world like the motor is sitting on a bracket, mounted to the back of the saw. I looked up a PDF of the manual and discovered that it was a belt driven saw, with the drive pulley on the back, left hand side of the saw, which is consistent with the picture. Just looked like an awful big motor for that saw.1 point -

Dust Collection
OCtoolguy reacted to JTTHECLOCKMAN for a topic
You asked if anyone reads your links so my answer. Did you read the entire post or just the top line????????????? Again I applaud you for your data search and hope it will be helpful I too try to collect dust at the source at times. But I use way too many tools to be able to do that. Tools that create more dust than a scrollsaw. The Osha standards you speak of are bare minimums and each person is affected differently. I have dealt with this throughout my construction career. All my point was is that all the measures you take to control dust weather at the source or scrubbing of the air, the best and most proven method is to wear a dust mask. If you can clean your shop with all the equipment and no mask is needed I congratulate you. How many here will be able to do that?? That is just my point Do not take this personal.1 point -
Dust Collection
Oscar Myer reacted to Sycamore67 for a topic
JTTHECLOCKMAN ...I understand you do not use a box fan and do not care. But why such a response. Nobody has a shop that is a clean room so we are all exposed to dust and other contaminants. The question is the amount and time of exposure there are OSHA standards for PEL (permissible exposure limits.). Having some understanding of the dust levels provides an idea of how bad the air is and what kind of prevention plan is needed. There are quite a few on this site who do use box fans and it might be helpful to them. Personally, I use a 5 hp cyclone system ducted throughout my shop, a Festool HEPA extractor on my smaller tools and scroll saw and a Jet air filter. I try to collect dust at the point of origin. If the air in your shop stays clean enough, there is no need for a mask.1 point -
Thanks a Larry, I look forward to hearing more on your tests and how it measures.1 point

Rust
OCtoolguy reacted to new2woodwrk for a topic
Periodically I notice rust forming on the SS table even though I keep it waxed. After the hurricane, there was a tremendous amount of rust on the SS table, so much so that I thought it was completely ruined and I would have to replace it. I may still add it to my personal loss for insurance. I managed to clean it and thought I got it all. I think perhaps I did not get 100% of it, and it continues to come back periodically and I keep waxing and buffing. My drill press does get a bit of rust and I keep that oiled as well. My table saw holds up very well though - I keep it waxed as well but it also has a wooden cover I made for it - it is the only tool I really have that does not show signs of rust on the surface I'm in Florida, so rust I think is expected - plus my shop is in my garage - no air control in there at all except the dust collection stuff1 point -
My router bis is carbide but comes from HF. Very dull and used very little. pulled the bearing and cleaned the two blades. I tried touching them up with a diamond hone. But upon close exam it is not worth it. I'm just ordering a quality bit and be done with it.1 point

Metal Sculptor Introduction
Harry Barton reacted to Patrice Lemée for a topic
Hi I asked for help finding a scroll saw to cut metal with and some asked to see more of my work so I figured an introduction would be a good place to do that. I am a metal sculptor. Been working with metal in one form for a little more than 20 years now. My Dad was a metal worker and also did sculptures as a side hobby and side job, guess that’s where I got the bug and hopefully the genes. Here are a few of my sculptures You can see more on my website at www.patricelemee.com I hope you guys (and gals) like it and a great big thanks once again for all your help. Patrice1 point -

I paid $600 for this saw five years ago. Mine is a 1986 model. Single speed , no stand and it is a 25" saw. Parts are still available for it. I do not do any fretwork so single speed is fine with me. I bought it as a back up saw and have used it a lot. I have another Hegner as my go to saw for inlay. I agree that I would not recommend a Hegner to do fretwork. Blade changes are cumbersome compared to other saws. The Hegner advantage is durability.1 point
