  2. Working out the kinks to my process and trying to remember how I did things last year LOL I cut out a bunch of puzzles in some poplar we bought at Lowes - $20 for 8"x6' board - got 9 patterns out of it. Originally had 11, but after gluing them, somehow the layout didn't work the 2nd time LOL I rough cut them all, drilled the holes for the inner pieces on all of them, stacked them for cutting and was able to put out 2 cuts today: Not sure where I got this pattern so if it belongs to someone here thank you: Pattern Removed This one I cut, but it's too small - the tabs for a few were too small and don't stay in so I'm going to use it as a sample, and cut a larger one Paper not removed on this one yet - The pattern came of the woodimals book for this one Both will get finished tomorrow hopefully. Thanks as always for reading

  3. I am not sure that I have a photo of one of the first "bigger" projects I did but I made a nativity set for my daughters. It was a Steve Good pattern. I remember having difficulty cutting the straight lines for the manger. Went out to try to find a fence for the saw!!! lol. I also remember trying to figure out how to get the markings on the figures. I now realize that they should have been cut out. I just used a sharpie to colour the lines in. . That was back around 2013. Fast forward - this is my latest project

    Oak Cross

This is another piece my brother gave me. I thought it was a nice piece of oak. It's about 8x14 1/2" thick. It was a very hard piece of wood, not sure why. I used a FD #3. Semi poly for the finish. Thanks for looking.

  9. The Dustopper is an interesting development. the guy, Tom Huntley, that invented it and brought it to market did a great job. I have read a number of reviews and watched comparison videos. They all say similar things that The Dust Deputy does a slightly better job with fines but quite a bit more expensive. There is a thread on Sawmillcreek where the author answers some questions.

  12. I have been using the Dust Stopper for some time now and had been wondering how effective it is. Today I cut a piece of Cedar. It produces a red sawdust. I had put a new filter in my vacuum and so this was a perfect time for a test. Photo 1: Small piece I cut Photo 2: Filter Queen Vacuum Photo 3: Dust Stopper Photo 4: Filter after cutting the small plaque. The last photo does not show the pink sawdust very well but actually has quite a bit of the dust on the entire filter. I am disappointed on that amount of sawdust. The plaque could not cause very much sawdust with a #3 Pegas MG blade. I have not opened the five gallon bucket to see how much sawdust is in there but will do so tomorrow. I am having my doubts about the efficiency of the Dust Stopper. I would expect some dust on the filter but nearly as much as there was. As an aside, I use a furnace filter with a 20" fan to trap some of the sawdust from the top of the saw. I am impressed. The filter is pink.

    Hi again guys

It's been many many moons since I have been on here, but have to admit that I have missed it so much. Hopefully will try to put in a regular appearance and get back in the saddle. I have been doing quite a bit of work and will surly post some pics in the coming days. Am still using the old style fret saw and never graduated to a scroll saw... Would just like to wish everyone a healthy and prosperous new year. All the best. Tony

  14. Robin Williams was a gift to people who like to laugh. As a fellow struggler with depression I feel a connection with him. Love this pattern by Charles Dearing. Cut in 1/2" red oak. I reduced the size to around 7" X 9".

    Shelf pattern

a While back I found this pattern on the internet but couldn’t open the file type it was formatted. I got you great people involved and it was opened, turned into a pdf and jpeg files and I got my pattern. Just finished cutting it and now letting the glue dry. I’m not patient enough to wait till it’s finished before showing it. I’ll paint it once glue is dry and I have the time. Thanks again to everyone that helped me getting that pattern opened!

  19. My DD collects all the fines, and the big pieces go in the shop vac. If the fines went in the shop vac the filter would plug up right away.

  21. My wife and I were talking about toys we got for Christmas many years ago and she said, as a very young girl, she got a Hampelmann puppet. (Jumping Jack) I decided to surprise her and found a picture and and cut out the pieces on the scroll saw and pasted the cut outs of the picture on to the pieces. Used 1/8" dowl for the pivots. Hardest part was locating the hole locations on the joints and the center pins where the string wraps around to lift the joints. A fun project and she really appreciated it.

  22. I just wanted to share this newest project of the Nativity that I completed today. The pattern is by Steve Good and I jacked it up a little for a special customer. The frame is made from Poplar scraps I get from a local cabinet shop, the Mary and Joseph image and the base are cut fron 5/8 inch Cherry and I also used Cherry for the corner splines on the frame. The tiny LED fairy lights are sewn to a dark blue fabric to simulate the night time journey. Our customer LOVES it. Thanks for looking.MERRY CHRISTMAS to all.

  23. I always thought it was the larger pieces which settled into the DD while the finer particles went on to the vacuum?

  24. I have a good size cardboard box taped top the top of the bench top drill press. It fits loosely down the back and part way around the around the sides and has managed to catch all the pieces the mop tries to throw across the room after the first one or two it missed. I find I have altered the way I present the pieces to the mop, so if it does grab a piece it is thrown into the box. It helps to offer a pray or two in appeasement to the missing piece gods. When the box gets messy it is easy to replace with a new one.

  25. My DD is incredible! I don't have a filter in my vacuum - I removed it once I got the DD. The way the DD works as I understand it is: The DD traps all the small particle dust and the larger pieces are sucked through to the vacuum it self. I have removed the DD and yes indeed there is an incredible amount of dust and the larger particle matter is inside the vacuum. I only use the vacuum for the smaller power tools like the scroll saw and drills I have a 2hp HF unit which I use as my main dust system hooked to the table saw and work bench for vacuuming up the shop and blow out pieces. I also have a fan with filter setup to "suck up" air borne particles but I can't use it at the moment since my garage is so packed with "stuff" Just my 2 cents worth.

  27. Just for the heck of it, I decided to clean out my DD. It had quite a bit of fine dust in the bottom of it. Tomorrow I'll open up my Fein vac and see what it looks like. It has a thick hepa filter in it. The bucket on my Dustopper appears to be catching quite a bit of my table saw sawdust. I use it for that primarily. I have hooked it up to my Ridgid spindle sander and it works great on it.

  29. This is how I make my boxes after doing the inlay in the 3/8" top: I use 3/8" thick wood throughout. I re-saw the wood (I use eastern red cedar) to 3/8" and make the bottoms to size. My boxes are 6"x8" mostly. To make the sides, I rip the 3/8" cedar to 1 3/4" strips and then cut to length at a 45 degree bevel, on each end, to form the four sides. Then I glue these four pieces together at the corners as they stand on edge on my bench. I then put two rubber bands around this assembly to hold it in place until the glue sets. ( I also use a small frame to hold the sides in place as I install the rubber bands. All you need is a board with two short strips attached at ninety degrees). I use Elmer's white glue. It dries quickly, dries clear, and is cheap. $14 a gallon. (I go through two gallons a year) If the frame that is thus made is not perfectly square, not to worry. It does not matter because the top and bottoms are a little larger than this side assembly. After the glue sets I sand the top and bottom edges, of this assembly, flat in my stationary belt sander. I then put very little glue on the bottom edge and place it on the bottom and repeat this for the top. I apply eight 3" spring clamps until the glue dries. (glue dries well enough to handle in an hour) The top and bottom are a bit larger than the side assembly is, so I cut off the excess in my band saw and then sand flat in the stationary belt sander. This is where you may see some minor gaps in the joints so, I fill those in with a mixture of white glue and dust from my orbital sander to use as filler. Sand flat and sand the whole box with 100 grit sandpaper using a random orbital sander including rounding off the edges a little. I then sand to 180 grit and apply clear lacquer from a rattle can. After the finish is dry I take the box back to the band saw and cut off the lid using a tall re-saw fence,. I make the lid 3/4" deep. (This 3/4"includes the 3/8" thick top.) I then sand the sawmarks out of the cut edge and install the hinges. I use a spacer on the hinges side of this box to keep the hinge side from pinching before the front side touches when closed. I use the thickness of two business cards for this. I do not finish the inside of the cedar box but I often apply one more coat of spray lacquer on this box after the hinges are installed. Hope this helps. If you have any questions you are welcome to email me . I will be glad to help. Jim

    got a new chair

The setup I'm using is a hybrid; bottom of the chair is a HF chair that came with a motorcycle seat the top is a tractor seat from a chair I bought at Tractor Supply Co., the platform is 1/2" ply 2x4ft with a hole to fit the post in the chair, the hole is offset front to back to allow room for the foot switch. Maybe this will give you some ideas.

    Heart Puzzle Pattern

Valentine's Day is a great day for giving gifts, any day is a great day for giving puzzles as gifts. So here's a simple 12 piece heart puzzle that might make a nice gift on V day or maybe just about any day. I cut mine from 1/4" birch ply and lightly painted it pink on the front. 43. I knew I needed to find a different outlet for my enjoyment in woodworking, so bought the Wen. My first was really bad. I knew nothing about how to cut. Hadn't even watched Steve Good's intro series. Pinned blade that came from with the saw. Discovered later that it was a #9. I've since upgraded to a Delta and have a bit more understanding of blades and how to cut. My latest completed project. I have a 4-5 other not puzzles in various stages of completion. I like the puzzles because I can finish in a a of hours. I suffer senior onset attention deficit disorder.

    Pegas Blades

No, John, just Pegas. I used FD blades for years purchased from Mike. Bob Duncan of Pegas gave ArtCrafters the opportunity to distribute Pegas. I use the MGT blades on the demo saw at ArtCrafters and am very impressed. With that said, if not for this opportunity, I would still be using FD blades.
