About a year ago I saw an Elvis portrait in @wombatie's album that I really liked. I asked and she didn't remember where it came from. I finally tracked down the original picture it came from and used it and Marg's cutting to make a new pattern. In the original picture Elvis had on a tie which didn't seem Elvisish. I added a sideburn and a little detail to it. If anyone's interested I am going to add it to the Pattern Library. Pardon my old school pattern making.8 points

Has you all know Victoria is having a bush fire crisis at the moment with lives lost along with hundreds of properties and millions of wildlife. I would like to thank everyone that has contacted me over the last week or two to make sure that my family and I are OK, I really do appreciate it and love everyone of you for it. I found a fire map recently and thought that I would share it with you, even though it is out of date and there are far more bush fires now. I have marked the area where I live so that you can see the distance between us and the fires. I am not going to say that we are out of danger because we have some bush land across the street from us so we are always on our guard but so far so good. Thank you all. Marg3 points

DIY Sander Shrouds?
new2woodwrk and 2 others reacted to Rolf for a topic
I have my system connected to A JET Vortex 1100 VX. It is a Cyclone wanabe, that is surprisingly effective, with a 2 micron cartridge filter that is the original. I bought it in Dec 2011. It has had a lot of chips and dust go through it. especially fine dust when doing Intarsia. 4"pvc pipe, longest run ~30 ft. and 4 elbows and a 2" reducer to my bench top router at the end of the run, still lots of suction.3 points -
DIY Sander Shrouds?
OCtoolguy and 2 others reacted to Sycamore67 for a topic
I have built something very similar to Rolf for My pneumatic drum sanders. It works well but I have a strong dust collector and am pulling around 650-700 cfm thru it. For somethings like sanding on the lathe or drill press, I have tried using a bell mouth hood on the end of the dust collection hose. It seems to work much more effectively than just the end of a hose. I read about it on the Australian forum woodworkforums.com3 points -
Chinese New Year is the Chinese festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese calendar. This year it starts January 25. The festival is usually referred to as the Spring Festival in mainland China, and is one of several Lunar New Years in Asia. So I thought it fitting to create a nice stand up sign for the occasion. I cut mine from a piece of 1/2" plywood I had in the shop. It was thick enough so didn't need a base. The dragon is the common Chinese symbol and there is also a Chinese symbol for Spring. While this is good for 2020, it could be modified for other years. So get your fireworks out (a traditional feature of the New Year) and help celebrate this important event. Permanent Patterns?
new2woodwrk and one other reacted to JimErn for a topic
Never heard of them or the use, but at first blush, If it was permanent the only way I can see to use them is to put them on the reverse side of the piece2 points -
I basically cover my suction unit with an old woven onion bag ( from an old bag of onions ) which catches any loose parts from going up the line to the collector. loose one part of a large design and it pretty much ruins your day -makes the whole thing junk. 2 hours down the drain ( or worse ) The shrouds you guys have around your sanders are pretty neat - mine i just pull behind the unit2 points

I have read many reports regarding the service that folks have gotten from their Dewalt Service Centers and not much good was ever said. Well, I wanted to give credit where credit is due. I have a Porter-Cable router, model number 1101, that my grandfather bought new way back before I was born. I'm 76 years old. He left it to me when he passed away and I have used it many times. But, the last time I used it, last Sunday, I dropped it. Unfortunately it landed on the aluminum housing where the brush holder is located on one side. It dinged the aluminum but it also shattered the black plastic/bakelite cap that holds the brush in place. My heart sunk. So, I started searching for parts and found nothing was available for a power tool that old. I did find out though that Dewalt/Black & Decker/Porter-Cable are all under one corporate umbrella now. So, I found that the service center is about 45 miles from me. I gave them a call and got hold of a very nice young lady and explained my situation. She asked me to hang on and she went and found a person who had vast knowledge about the older tools. It turns out that the same cap is used on many other older tools and they had 5 of them in stock at $2.20 each. So, I ordered 2 of them. They shipped them to me in a box by U.P.S. and didn't charge me any shipping. A total cost of $4.74. I couldn't be happier. I did call out to the center and got hold of the person who is in charge of that department and gave them a great big thank you and made sure that those 2 people got the credit they deserve. So, I hope those of you who have to contact their Dewalt Service Center have the same good fortune that I did. My center is located in Ontario, Ca. Do a google search for it and give them a try the next time you need parts for any of those 3 brands. Ok, I'll get off my soapbox now.2 points

Tree of Life
Eric67 reacted to OSU Buckeye for a topic
When I saw a youtube video of someone who did a scroll saw tutorial on the tree of life....it convinced me to get into the hobby. So I bought a scroll saw and made this my first project. I decided to attach a photo as well for the background. Also added a white backing so the light would show through a bit. I put the finished tree of life on the window sill.1 point -

Inkscape is free open source software. https://inkscape.org. If you print patterns and you don't have this you need to install it learn to use it. Why anyone would want a pattern in a PDF or a bitmap format like jpg is beyond me. You can use Inkscape and svg to resize to any size you want and print sharp clear patterns no matter what size they are. You don't need to convert to another format to print them. Almost every new project I do starts with cleaning up the image and converting to svg.1 point

Puzzle do you get up to Buffalo much? Searching the web I see several lumber suppliers who would likely have it. Mosher and Advantage. My supplier is 2 hours away. I combine me trip there with other errands in that direction and I usually pick up 5 or 6 sheets. Enough to last me a year or more. BTW my wife went to SUNY Fredonia so I have been there. Nice area except for during the winter.1 point -

I guess that you would also have o make patterns that your fret saw can handle, is that correct? The second one does not need any detail, you nailed it perfectly. Well done on both portraits. Marg1 point

Tree of Life

The use of a photo was from someone on youtube who used a sunset photo. I decided to use a photo I had taken of the two ducks swimming because it was simple and the focus point is on the ducks on the right, their paddling wake on the left, and a brighter "sky" section showing through the top of the tree through the smaller holed out sections. It really depends what effect you are looking for. I may do some others with different photos down the road.1 point -

If you can't tell by my annoying posts, I'm having a fun time with these new key/leash/hook holders that I've started making... I've decided I'm going to change things up this Saturday at what may be my last event of the year by reducing the number of puzzles I display and showcasing about 10 of the new items and take orders for them. The dog leash holders will always be the big seller, but I think I'll get interest in other animals as well. Especially the Unicorn, Dragon and maybe BigFoot. I've sold 50 of them in the past 2 weeks so I see potential and want to really showcase them. I'll snap pictures of my modified setup and I'll do a video for my You Tube page as well.1 point
