  1. I am making a box to gift to my neighbor. Got started on the scrolling this afternoon after cutting and gluing wood for it yesterday. Her box is going to be 3/16" Maple, then I have a 1/4" BB under it so I have more control and it the BB turns out okay, I will have a second box. I plan on lining the box with a dark wood. This is a pattern from Findscrollsaw.com. It is called the "Modena Jewel Box". Pedro, the owner of the site is in Spain. He is a great gentleman to work with. He is recently back after being offline for around 3 months, with an illness and 2 months in hospital... I am so happy he is back that I have purchased 6 of his patterns lately, and have a few more I want,,,, just in case. I plan on doing mostly this type of scrolling this year. Anyway, it is not much accomplished, but I am a very slow scroller and not really in a hurry. When I hurry I make mistakes. This is the lid to the box.

Now that the holidays are over I can start going on to other things to cut. I thought I would push myself to do something with a challenge (don't forget... I'm a newb ) Here's how things are going so far... /Oscar

    My First Puzzle

Found this pattern on Steve Good's site and wanted to make it for my niece's grandson who is just about 18 months old or so. Used some extra red oak plywood for the puzzle itself and then routed/carved out the backer from the inside of a board I was already using for routing practice. I placed the first finger hole too low to properly push the middle piece out so threw a second one a little higher. My 21 year old daughter painted the pieces for me and then I sprayed some lacquer over everything yesterday. It's funny how the finishing part of the project can take longer than the actual work sometimes Adler Puzzle by Scott Baker, on Flickr Puzzle Back by Scott Baker, on Flickr Adler Puzzle Pieces by Scott Baker, on Flickr

    Weekend project.

Just finished this sign this weekend. I want to thank Brenda for doing the pattern for me. At the last minute they ask if I could put a heart in place of the & sign so I printed one out and glued it over the & sign and even painted red behind it. Gave it to them this morning and they loved it.

  8. Well, I wasn't going to show my first because I figured I no longer had the picture... but in looking for a old truck picture for my son.. I found the very first piece I made.. Ignore the date.. I took the picture a few years after actually cutting it.. I don't have a photo of my most recent cut but I do have a photo of one that is fairly new.. plus most of you all have seen most of my recent work in the last few years.. Cut this on my fathers old Delta 2 speed saw.. this is a scrap plywood 3/8" from a camper re-roofing job.. blade was most likely a old Olsen 2/0 reverse tooth... I still have the old Delta 40-560 type 2 saw...

  9. These pictures help at all... I'm not really understanding your question.. but this pictures are from my etsy page.. last picture is of a custom order one where I added the date..

  10. A few things I finished this weekend. Both Steve Good patterns. The Candle holder is 11 inches high and 7 wide, made out of B/B. I haven't put a finish on it yet. Still undecided. The Tic Tac Toes game is made out of walnut and Birch. It's 5 1/2 x 5 1/2.One of the candle holders I'll give to my granddaughter. She has about 30 yankee candles. LOL. One of the Tic Tac Toe games is for one of my teacher friends at school for the kids to play with when they can't go outside.

    Crosses

It was mentioned that a Celtic knot that I'd given to my Mom (an early project, still learning my way around my first saw) was too small to be used as a trivet. Makes a good coffee coaster, though. The same conversation, I was asked about crosses as trivets. Easy enough to do, just make em big enough! So, since last weekend was taken up with funeral arrangements/events and no sawing was done, and this coming week is a business trip (no after-work sawdust), I decided to cram as much as possible into one weekend. LOL 1x12 whiteboard from Lowes for most of them, the "round" one is a 1.75" thick piece of battleship armor I believe. That thing was DENSE. Probably a pressure-treated beam, I nabbed several pieces from skids in front of local housing construction a while back. Went through three FDUR #7 blades on that one piece.

  12. One of the most popular signs in my Etsy store has been the table top Area 51 Sign I designed several years ago. I thought I'd update the sign a bit with a variation on the theme and also use a raised inlay to make the sign a bit more interesting. I cut the sign from maple, but I stained the raised inlays with a chestnut stain to make them stand out. Also cut a bazaar jagged base to accent the piece -- even left the blade burn marks as an accent. I have the pattern here for you if you would like to try it, but I have to make two notes here. First on the pattern I had a problem with the number 5, since the head of the alien is out in the open. The five becomes rather weak. You might want to include a little band of wood where the five opens, when cutting. Also I used 3 degrees on the saw tilt, might want to use 5 degrees instead. Experiment. Pattern can be downloaded from my Free Pattern Page: http://baggetta.com/pebooks/puzzle_patterns.htm Video: Also did a video as I constructed this sign. If you'd like to view it it is available on my YouTube Channel.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdAq26AGCLE

    RBI

Not getting into any comments here about RBI because last time I got my hand slapped here. Just wanted to let those know who may have an interest I got off the phone with Doug who I am guessing has taken over as a fireman(customer service) to put out some fires over there. Not sure if Raven Nondorf is still there or not . But got a load of excuses about my order and was asked if i still want it. As I told him he has me over the barrel nowhere else to get parts. So yes send it. So after 5 months almost to the day I should get my order. What this all means about parts or new saws orders I have no idea because he said there is still 3 guys in the shop and that is all. All I can say to those who are buying a new RBI saw or are buying a used one good luck and hope all works out well for you. Maybe some expediting will happen with a change in voice.

  28. Lately I have been using a #1 MGB set at 1.5 degrees. I always use 3/8 stock when doing inlays. The angle well vary depending on wood thickness and blade size. I used a #65 drill bit for the entry holes. Using a #3 blade I set my saw a about 1.7 degrees and use a #63 drill bit.

  30. I decided to go with the slow speed grinder, mainly because of the price and I got it for 17.00 after my Amazon rewards points. I can always upgrade later if I get good enough to sell any of this stuff. I can always take off a drum and do what Dave said, add a sanding mop. I ordered the flex drums from Judy's website tonight, too. Can I stop spending money now? heh

  38. I WAS very much like you until we decided to sell out and go on the road. What we kept fit in a 6 x 8 storage unit. Now, we live in a mobile home with almost zero extra storage space. I do manage to "pack-rat" some stuff and find a place in my little shop to hide it until I can find a use. Mostly wood now. I also have a bunch of old hard drives and quite a collection of the little ones that come out of laptops. I use them the same way you do. My Dad used to kiddingly say, I have a ball of string made up of pieces too short to save. The same goes for tin foil. My folks lived through the depression so that's probably not too far off the truth. He passed the habit down to me. I can't stand to "waste" anything. Except time that is. I manage to waste a lot of that.

  39. Had to think long and hard about posting here on this topic, because I think the point is to see how much improvement one has made. I think back and some of very first scrolling was when I was a little dirty kid that played pirates, army, cowboys and indians, err, sorry cowpersons and native Americans, and I grabbed a scrap piece of wood wood, climbed up on my stool and scroll a pirate knife, army tommy gun or some firearm to shoot the enemy with. Of coarse I have know pictures of them, didn't have digital camera or cell phones and I couldn't stand still long enough to have some one stand behind a big box, take of a lens cover and hold up a apparatus that popped with a flash of light (think about it, you will get it). But when I really became a "scroller" I started right out doing fretwork. I don't remember the order that I cut the pieces but this was one of my very early ones. I think it was my peak..... and to be honest, I have not bested it. But I have sure enjoyed the trip, tried many different things, and would say that in my life span, of hobbies, I think I have enjoyed scrolling the most, and it has lasted the longest. But I am almost 76 now, I am loosing some dexterity, have some damage to my vision, can't control my fingers as well nor feel thins with them as well, can't sit as long, back hurts, get headaches, and my attention span is getting shorter... neither words, I am getting old. Not complaining about it, just a fact. So, my new is pretty mundane comparatively, not at all ashamed of them, I really enjoyed making them, but they are not as detailed or technical as I use to do. My future cuts, I hope are going to be things like scrolled fretwork boxes and some clocks, things I hope to give to someone that they will want to keep. I only have about 4 or 5 projects planned this year, so each one is going to take me a while and involve some other woodworking to accomplish. I also spend more time pondering now, as you can see. Sorry for the wordy post. I shut up, now and go back to my current project

    Pair of Kings

I don't do much stack cutting because I usually use hardwood. This was my first time cutting BB plywood and after many hours of cutting it was nice to have a pair. I cut these for a local 5K run for Childhood Cancer. One is a door prize and one will be sold to raise money. The backer is felt. The frame I made with some picture frame moulding a friend gave me. I don't like making frames! They are about 15" X 15". My favorite is the darker one.

    junior HAWK scroll saw

wow. those are some old hawk scroll saws. i see hawks all the time for sale mostly 220 and 226 saws. i still think bushton has done alot of improvements since they started making the saws. i would worry on some of those really old hawk saws that the parts might not be available anymore.
