Valentine Projects.
amazingkevin and 5 others reacted to Denny Knappen for a topic
Two projects finished Monday, January 20th. Both are Steve Good patterns. I cut these on the demo Pegas Scroll Saw. I used Pegas MGT #1, #3, and #7 blades. Picture are deceiving and the "Be Mine" Heart Box is only 1/3/4" x 4" x 4". A tiny box. A little story about the "I Love My Valentine". I made one several years ago and glued the front pierce to the backside of the second piece, so the words are backwards. Dianne still has it on her wall. Good Memories.6 points -

Started a project today that I'm using Spiral blades. Hadn't used them for about 3 years but figured I'd give them a go. Pattern has a lot of veining and small holes so I started out with and FD #1 Spiral Blade. Cutting was going OK but was a little troublesome because the blade wasn't really cutting the lines of the pattern but basically shredding it as I moved the board. I didn't remember them doing that before but this was the first time using a #1 Spiral, maybe just not a big enough cutting area. Finished the small holes and veining,, about 35 cuts, and decided to change to a #3 Spiral for the bigger areas. As I'm pulling my blade out of the stock tube it hit me---I had the darn thing upside down. The #3 was cutting through like butter without a problem. It's amazing how much easier this hobby can be when you do things right. ARRRRGGGGHH!3 points -
Late start, but some progress today.... Before I started scrolling, I drill all the rest of the holes today. Have to take a lot of care, would be easy drill in the wrong spot, because the cut out parts are not black. Glad to get that done because I was worried I would put holes where they should not be. I am having a great time. Drilling and scrolling I spent about 4.5 hours on it today.3 points

Well I cut one offs now and then with just one piece.. Never had much issues with it.. I do like stack cutting because most times I'm selling the piece and maybe more buyers at a later time.. If it's a personalized item that only needs one piece.. I just cut the one piece.. I originally cut this one as a single piece... then everyone wanted one and I ended up having to cut 4 more... that's why i just stack cut everything now.. That's a lot of holes to cut for just one time... then need to make 2 more a week later.. LOL.. Not doing that again unless it's personalized..3 points

I am making a box to gift to my neighbor. Got started on the scrolling this afternoon after cutting and gluing wood for it yesterday. Her box is going to be 3/16" Maple, then I have a 1/4" BB under it so I have more control and it the BB turns out okay, I will have a second box. I plan on lining the box with a dark wood. This is a pattern from Findscrollsaw.com. It is called the "Modena Jewel Box". Pedro, the owner of the site is in Spain. He is a great gentleman to work with. He is recently back after being offline for around 3 months, with an illness and 2 months in hospital... I am so happy he is back that I have purchased 6 of his patterns lately, and have a few more I want,,,, just in case. I plan on doing mostly this type of scrolling this year. Anyway, it is not much accomplished, but I am a very slow scroller and not really in a hurry. When I hurry I make mistakes. This is the lid to the box.2 points

kevin, the info i got from that other forum was from 2010 and the guy was an ex RBI employee. the fusion saw looks like the old ultra sides instead of the red cast iron of the g4. i suspect the arms may have been made in china also, but not sure. the guy was banned on that forum, but not sure why. he had alot of info on hawk saws.2 points

I understand. I’m sure you are finding that hard Maple is very easy to cut or at least it is for me. I love how the cut edges come out so smooth and even shiny. Although I’ve never stained Maple, it does take a topcoat very nicely.2 points

"Hobby", if looked up in the dictionary, means " empty wallet".2 points

As machinists, I don't think they understood castings used in the G4s and I'm sure the G4 was cost prohibitive, especially at their volumes. They understood milling, so they tried to take the ultra platform forward, and relabeled BM. This was unfortunate I think. I've not heard a lot new coming from them lately. I suspect the scroll saw side of their business is "coasting"2 points

If I remember correctly, the attempt at a building the 16" Hawk when Bushton first took over, was problematic. I remember some very real vibration issues that were never resolved. In hind site they would have been better off putting the development funds into marketing the existing G4's and grabbing a bigger chunk of the scroll saw market. JMO2 points

Looking great Paul! I noticed you aren’t cutting the traditional cutting from the center out. Any particular reason?2 points

Sue Mey pattern question
kmmcrafts and one other reacted to spirithorse for a topic
Thanks for all the replies everybody and @kmmcrafts the pics did help. My original question was, for example, was it designed to cut the bride and groom out of 1/2" for example and cut the wings as a separate piece out of 1/8" and then slide the wings so they wrap around the bodies. God Bless! Spirithorse2 points -
Thanks Ralph... much appreciated. Will be doing one or two of these for sure. Tony2 points

Love the candle holders so much. Wifey passed behind me and when she saw it categorically stated that she wanted something similar. Would it be too much to ask I I could used the pattern? Thanks and well done Tony2 points

I hate Spiral Blades.2 points -
For spirals and real small blades I run my finger along the teeth and "feel" which side is up / down.. The teeth will grab you sort of if you're sliding the finger up the blade.. and they won't be grabby sliding down the blade.. Someone mentioned think of it as a fireman sliding down the pole at the firehouse... you can slide down but not up the pole.. LOL Not sure who said that.. but it stuck with me.. So if the finger slides "down" without grabbing the teeth or being scratchy then that's the top of the blade... Be sure to do thin towards the middle of the blade for those blades that have reverse teeth... that can mess with you a bit if you're not careful... do ask how i know that one...2 points

I use my shirt pocket magnet for those tiny blades. I look at them under the magnifier, get them the right way and stick them to the magnet. A lot easier for me.2 points -

i dont know that it is coasting. just not alot of people willing to spend $1200-1400 on a scroll saw. RBI ended the cast iron frame which was made overseas. along with several other parts. they made about 100 or so called g4 fusion saws before closing up. the fusion saw went back to the aluminum sides and did away with the casting. all this from another forum website.1 point
-
Nope, just didn't. Partly because I have never scrolled Maple before so I started along one side, and only drilled holes in about a 1" wide strip along one side. Figured if I run into trouble with the maple, I could just cut off the part that I had drilled and cut, and save the rest for some other project. Got started and just kept going around the outside. I like cutting the Maple. Also, I rarely start in the middle, now that I think of it. Maybe it is my wood miser-ness..1 point

Dewalt 788 trouble
Roberta Moreton reacted to jerry1939 for a topic
I used my Delta for years with no problems. Contrary to what a lot of you folks say about warranties, I unpacked mine, made sure it ran & took apart the brand new saw and greased it. Greased it again annually. Only thing I'd add about the switch is that the Delta (& most likely the 788) has a hole in both sides of the switch housing. Insert a zip tie in one side, up & over the "ON" part of the switch & you can thread it out the hole on the other side. Next, swing the tie towards you (holding the switch back) and tighten the zip tie. That locks the switch ON and sawdust isn't any longer a problem. That's why God created foot switches. jerry1 point -
