    Third time is charm

Well maybe, this is the third piece of intarsia I have done, this one I am pretty much happy with, still room for improvement, but with luck I might move from apprentice to journeyman sometime soon

  4. Thanks for sharing, Kevin, Yeah, the price of the inserts alone is the main reason I haven't made any clocks like that. I know I couldn't get a good price selling them around here and my wife would probably just see it as another dust collector if I made one for myself. I would still like to make a wooden gear clock just to know that I can do it and the novelty factor but, who knows if I will ever take the time to do it. God Bless! Spirithorse

    Newbie in Montana

I moved to Northwest Montana three years ago and needed some wintertime hobbies. A year ago Santa brought me a compound miter saw, the for a birthday I got a router and started playing around with scrap wood. This past Christmas, Santa (LSH) got me a dewalt scroll saw and I’ve been having fun with it. I made some signs for friends and then got interested in dog portraits. (I’m a retriever field trial trainer/competitor). Of course the pattern is a big challenge! I’m anxious to try a bowl! I’ve learned a lot from ssv videos and forums. Thanks! Christina A.

  9. Guess for me it is just the pleasure of making things. I've always like building, and really have made no money from doing it. I guess my house, I have made from it,,,, 38 years of a comfortable place to live and it should be worth something. But, I like building, have not regrets other than I would feel good is someone wanted some of it. But no matter, the kids can clean it all out when I am in the big workshop in the sky. They will have a heck of a wiener roast I guess. Right now I am putting together the bell tower clock that is a real challenge for me to get it together. Once done, well there it will sit and I go on to the next project.

  11. Well, this was a first for me. Inlay. First lesson learned from this was to select thinner wood....both pieces were 1" thick (or less....grand total was about 1 3/4" thick when stacked). Thicker wood probably needed a steeper angle, I did this at 2 degrees (more or less), following a nifty video I found on Youtube (looked suspiciously like Dave...). I had to hammer the two together. Also, most of my scraps are all the same color/flavor of wood (outer ring/wolf are red oak, I splurged and bought a board), so after rigorous sanding/filing didn't loosen the fit any, I didn't bother to go to the next step and sand them flat while joined. Just stained and pounded together. This'll definitely go on my "look where I started, and how far I've come" pile. Pattern was a pic I found on Google, its a design for guitar string pegs/tightener/doohickeys. Enlarged it, threw it in Inkscape to TraceBitmap and remove the jaggy edges, added the circle, and cut. Easy enough to cut.

    Propane Heater Safety

First John I am not recommending anything I am just stating what has worked for me for 20 years with no issues. I will state I am not a production operation. My heater is mounted on a 10 ft. ceiling and has a standing pilot. I use oil based stains and mostly rattle can finishes. Have you ever heard of ventless open flame gas heaters used in garages? They are to be mounted at least 3 ft. from the bottom of the heater above the floor. My point is if they were so dangerous they would not be allowed. This thread started out with concerns about suspended wood dust if I remember right and has since evolved. JMHO

  16. Practice, practice practice. Sometimes I think I am worse than when I started. Here's a clip art picture of an angelfish, I added the water in the background. I'm not sure what wood that is, it's 1/4th inch plywood of some type. I used blue stain for the water and just painted the fish with solid acrylics. What am I going to do with all this stuff I'm making? Maybe I'll take them up to the Senior Center for Bingo prizes?

  17. Sasho contributed the pattern for this to our library about a year ago. To me, it's both sad and happy at the same it. I immediately cut it, but only this week got around to framing 'Life' and it now hangs over my desk. The foreground, the background, and the frame are all quarter-sawn white oak.

  19. I very much agree with this..Me being a seller though, and not a hobby seller. I find that hard to do. The stuff I make helps put food in my kids mouths.. etc etc.. so it's not worthy for me to make something of this nature.. I get a kick out of folks saying they are just hobby scrollers then they get mad when someone tries to bargain with them at a craft show or they can't get squat or their items... wasn't the purpose of the hobby and hobby selling to get rid of the things you make.. and to mingle with the other sellers and customers..

  21. My first attempt at the winter bear, from Wood magazine - as compared to the custom bears I did for my wife's relatives 50th wedding anniversary. She's a retired RN and he's a retired contractor that rebuilds old 1950's Ford Thunderbirds as a hobby.

  22. I'll take a different tack now Bill. For most of us, this is a hobby. If you're into fretwork, don't rationalize yourself out of any project whether it would sell or be valuable to anyone except to yourself in the true joy of making it come forth. Yes, you might spend $100 plus in lumber, spend 200 hours in cutting and kick your scroll saw a few times. But in the end, it's that sense of accomplishment that these types of projects can lead to whether it ends up in a dumpster or the art museum. So maybe you should go for it. Most regrets are for the things that one doesn't do.

    Dewalt 788 Scroll Saw

Just thought I would wrap this thread up some with an update of the scroll saw. While a few of you guys had me concerned of my purchase, I have been scrolling for a few weeks now and able to say I absolutely love the saw. Quiet, easy to use and a total joy. Thank you all for all the comments. Hendo

    Propane Heater Safety

unless you make enough dust to saturate the air so much you cant see the other end in a 12' shop, dust isnt a problem with a propane heater. the problem is the CO2 burning propane makes.

  30. It is a beautiful clock and well done. I can see this same thing happening when I pass on too. I am sure whatever family members are left will be wanting to get rid of the many many projects I have laying around and just to get them to a decent home instead of throwing out. The insert is worth more than the $10.

  33. Well I emailed the guy just to make sure it wasn't a mistake in pricing. He responded already this is his responce: "Hi Paul, Thanks for the note. This clock was made by our former neighbor several years ago who is desceased. He scrolled many pieces. The price and listing is here to have it go to someone who would love it and to be honest it’s been up for so long I forgot about it." I suggested he try some other venue to sale it. But if some one wanted to pick it up, they maybe able to turn a profit. He really just wants it to go to someone that would enjoy it.

    Screech Owl

The pattern is by Jacob Fowler. I used 1/2" Poplar and 3/4" Padauk for the base. It was cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using #3R and #5R MGT blades. The finish is spray Shellac. Comments welcome.

    Willie nice portrait

Don't know whose pattern this is but it looks really lifelike for the small amount of detail. I've been a Willie fan for over 40 years. This is about 4" x 5" on 1/2" red oak. The backer is Monkeypod.

  39. Not been able to get to my saw for the last couple of weeks. Was on my own today so I did an easy one, just to cheer me up. No finish on it yet, I've to decide whether to have it backed black or brown.

    Portrait done.

Just finished this portrait yesterday. It was a tuff one to do. Had a lot of trouble with the lettering because of it being so small. I want to thank Paul (Grampa) for being able to do this pattern for me. I know it was a hard one to do by him and me. Well I did the best I could. Just have to give it a couple more coats of laquear.

    key plaque

We have a cousin who ask for a plaque to hold her keys. We looked at possible patterns, to see what she had in mind and she found the light wood pattern on Steve Goods page, so i told her I could cut it and glue it on a backer board. She agreed and this is what we came up with. the mark on the lower left corner does not exist on the plaque. It must have been a shadow or some reflection Dick heppnerguy

    Cheryl Davis

Cheryl, there is a lot of info on here regarding the 788. What to look out for, what to do for maintenance etc. Is it a type 1 or 2. Makes a little difference, not much. Just mostly where and when it was made. Scrollsaws.com has a lot of info too. The main thing is bearing lubrication at some point. Very important.

  50. I am not sure that I have a photo of one of the first "bigger" projects I did but I made a nativity set for my daughters. It was a Steve Good pattern. I remember having difficulty cutting the straight lines for the manger. Went out to try to find a fence for the saw!!! lol. I also remember trying to figure out how to get the markings on the figures. I now realize that they should have been cut out. I just used a sharpie to colour the lines in. . That was back around 2013. Fast forward - this is my latest project
