    Puzzles

We have a small scroll saw club that meets here in Cary, NC. Every month we try to have a challenge to cut. This time it was puzzles! Here are mine.

  4. Not sure if im doing this right or not so just let me know if I should just add to the first topic or start another one when I add pictures. Now this piece is made from scrap wood I had from another project. I thought it looked to nice to toss out so I went to my emboridy machine and emboried this saying and picture. When that was done I used this scrap piece as the frame. lol I have a few more of these scrap wood pieces that I will use as frames for other things. lol second picture is the mouse pincousin opened from the other post. LOL it was just a sitting there saying I don't know why you didn't see me before. lol. then we have paul bunin. yes yes I know horrable spelling. lol anyway paul is from one of my compound cut books. I used dowl if I rmember right for the tree stumps. Then I used 2 scrap pieces of wood and fitted a broken sawblade to it to make the saw. the wood the saw is inbeded in is an old plastic branch from a cake decoration I had left over. I made the bed roll from a scrap piece of denim and the little rocks are really left over pieces of puter I nabbed from a friend of mine before she could put it back in her casting pot to remelt. lol behind paul is a plastic fern tree. not sure where that came from . I don't think you can see it in the pictures but my friend donated a leadbased cast ax for paul to hold. my poor spike every time I say DONT THROW THAT OUT! he says do you HAVE to save EVERYTHING!! lol I say no but don't throw anything away before you ask me first. lol He doesn't listen to that lol so I have to try and catch him before he tosses out a potential craft item. lol i'll post more next time. when you are tired of seeing all the wood stuff iv crafted over the years just let me k now. Right now im working on the ark of the covenit pattern that I got from steve goods patterns. I'll post that one when its finished.

  6. Hi, Y'all! Some clever members advised me to post a pic from my gallery here to help get you to go there when you click the link <whew!>. Anyway, here's a train/shelf pattern from Wildwood Designs that was a lot of fun to cut. Working on several others with contrasting wood, but this was my first. Thanks to all the members for their clever advice, inspiration, and way-too-kind words of praise. Glad I found this organization!!

  7. I would have modified the design to accommodate the additional thickness. Since the 1/2 inch material is probably for the frame. For this type of thickness changes on smaller pieces, I agree with everyone else I would not run plywood through my planer. I am fortunate to have a Supermax 19-38 drum sander with a digital readout.

  13. Thanks everyone for your reply and your sympathy for my health , but everything is OK ! Before trying that, someone told me that he did it , with very little cutting material removed at each pass on the planer. And yes I have to planed 2 layers of wood to arrive at .500", the size need for my projet. And the reason I did those test with Baltic birch is that I need those 2 pieces for my future projet , a wooden gear clock , which is already in production. I will show you soon ! Baltic birch is the wood recommended for that. And I did not want to buy a 5'X5' piece only to use 12"X12", you would understand seeing the size of my basement's shop! Thanks again and sorry that you get much worry for me. planeur

  14. Hey sometimes multiple answers is a good thing...lol. Thanks for the kind words, I used a scroll saw, well it turned on and I shoved wood into the blade, when I was a kid, it was grandpa's and after breaking a few blades I gave up but wanted to try again and so far I really enjoy it. I may have been 8 at most then, now 41 so a little more patience.

    Double up

Went to Mexico with friends yesterday, so I had to double up on my orders today. Got two cut today, will glue and clamp tomorrow. Then spray with a couple coats of Shellac. Maybe a coat of Lacquer on top. Two down...one more to go. These crosses are selling well, in addition to the puzzle animals, 4 in total so far.

  16. Just signed up here, hoping to learn and get a little motivation from other scrollers. Got my first scroll saw for Christmas this past year from my wife, a genesis from home depot, and haven't really had a lot of time as of yet to use it, but did do 3 cutouts with it so far, wife likes them and everyone that's seen them seems to like them so I guess I did ok...lol. I do enjoy using my saw but I can tell already that i'll be ready for a better saw here real soon, I have found that using the pinless adapters on it are not a lot of fun. Hope i'm not breaking any rules by attaching these pics, not a real tech savy kind of guy but these are the first 3 things I cut, wife loves owls, I like eagles and the browning buck and doe was meant to be us together.

  17. KMM, you are correct in that USA Copyrights. I have been to numerous countries that the rights don't apply/not enforced and you would be surprised what you can find for cheap. 3 dollar DVD's of the lowest quality on new movies, Oakley's that are made so cheap, they are FAoakleys (Fake A** Oakleys) to name a few. Here in the US, major companies don't have enough resources in my opinion to see all the trademark infringements. Me personally, I don't like taking things from others and regardless, I rarely sell anything, more like hand out items to people that deserve the friends and family discount. Great...now big brother will be watching me.

  19. Yes, they would be protected images and can get you into a lot of legal issues IF caught and pursued. In this case, it is Disney’s and they pursue religiously to protect their stuff from all I hear and see. That said, it is very difficult I suspect for even large Companies like Disney to have to constantly have people looking everywhere for infringements like these. As soon as one is taken down, another one is popping up elsewhere no doubt. Whether an item is or is not infringing however would not be something we might be able to determine simply by looking at something online. You can obtain legal rights to produce images from a company and pay them royalties. Getting them however can be expensive. So, it is possible they it is a “licensed product.” If it is not, I suspect that Disney will quickly find them and shut it down given that they are clearly using the Disney name its self, Star Wars, and other wording that would clearly cause it to pretty easily pop up on Disney’s radar. if you are selling items that infringe on someone else’s copyright/trademark, and they choose to come after you for it, you could lose everything and in my opinion, is not something I would ever want to risk.

  20. I don't understand why you want to do this. I would go with a drum sander for the sake of safely alone. If you are trying to achieve this thickness for like mounting in dado's and grooves then I would simply make the dado's and grooves to match the ply.

  21. Yeah sounds like a better job for a drum sander

  26. Are you talking about plywood? No way would I run plywood through my planer.. the glues in ply are tough on blades.. and imagine they'd chew through a set of planer knives pretty quick too.. plus the ply's aren't very thick themselves and who knows what grade of wood is underneath that you'll end up with.. If I need a certain thickness then I use a solid wood.. Not to mention.. could be dangerous if the ply decides to separate.. You might be throwing chunks out of either end of the planer.. damaging the planer or injuring yourself..

    Need help on fonts

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR HELP. I WAS DOING ALL THE THINGS SUGGESTED, OVER AND OVER AGAIN AND NOTHING WORKED. HOWEVER i USED THE LINK FAB 4 SENT AND IT WORKED. NO IDEA WHY, BUT IT WORKED. In the past I have downloaded a lot of different free fonts from Dafont.com and I have never come across a problem but now, all of a sudden there seems to be something I have forgotten or there are some different things added that I do not understand. Here is my problem. I have a different computer and have found that when i need a new font added to Inkscape it somehow does not get there. It does download and comes onto my list of fonts that I have for my 'word' but does not show in my options for Inkscape. Can someone please help me to getting my fonts to show in Inkscape? I am trying to get the font, 'birds of paradise' on my inkscape for my word plaques. I watched youtube and tried what I saw there but it still does not show up. Any suggestions or help would be very much appreciated Dick heppnerguy

  28. you asked for pictures so here goes. now remember I' do easy things so be kind. lol The first one is a squarll ( I work in wood don't ask me to spell to! !) my younger cousin lives in California and someone told me they don't have squarlls there so I figured I d send her one. lol the second one is a clown lamp I made for a coworker years ago. then we have the lucet. you use it with yarn to make bets and such. I made several of these...one for each of my daughters and me and the craft box.lol I made the bag it goes in to.im real big on recycling thus the cow planter, candy dish or what ever. lol I got the patterns for the layered animals from the winterfiels colloction and I make all kinds of things with them.another thing I make with them are banks and pin cousions with a storage airea well somewhere I have a picture of the mouse pin cousin opened but I can't find it right now.lol to open it you just side the hind end up over. theres a dowl pin in the body and the back legs part. my mom asked me to make her a go away sign so that's the last picture. let me know if you wan to see any more.

  30. I have GOT to get spike (bf) to look at and read this theard!!! lol He just cleaned and organized my workshop! lol Why pray tell do you ask? Because this is a quote....YOU never put anything away or clean this room. LOL he's given up on my craft room. lol When we brought this house about 5 years ago one of the selling points was a fairly good sized work room. I have enough room in it to have all my power tools in it out and up and ready to use!!! I even have room to walk around in there and theres a wood cabinet that runs all across the short end wall I can put stuff in and on. I'll see if spike can take a pic of it before my messy disorganized self winds up messing it up again. lol Before that I lived in the back apartment of my moms duplex. There was a very long narrow room with shelves along half of one long wall where I had all my pattern mags and paper patterns as well all my paint, and tools and supplys. lol I had to move things around the shelfs to get what I wanted half the time and if that was't bad enough I I had like 3 big boxes in there full of plastic bags packing stuff and unfinished crafts and finished crafts. lol My wood was kept in a plastic garbage can, now that was fun trying to get out the wood I needed. lol I stashed some wood under our bed as well as broken down shipping boxes in our bed room. lol where the majority of my other craft supplys were in bags. lol now for painting I had a small desk behind our bed and rolling drawer thingy on wheels for small bottles of paint. lol The bigger things I painted on the kitchen table. But it seemed pretty big to me at the time because before that I lived in a little trayler with my kids and for awhile my tools were in moms basement about 3 miles from where I lived, that only lasted a few months before I decided this was not a good aragrement. Which means I had my brother and father help me bring my scrolls and drill press to my trayler where I made room for them in the kitchen!!!! lol my hand held power tools were stashed under the kitchen table and in a small metal cabnet I put under the bar sepreating the kitchen and living room. It worked out pretty good there and there was still room for 3 bar stools under there too. lol that seemed like heaven at the time because before my ex left me he would have to haul my scroll saw upstairs and into the kitchen of the house we lived in at that time after I lost the basement. lol its true where theres a will theres a way! lol i'll look and see if I can find any pictures of theses as it never really accured to me to take pics of my working aires. even though I have a good woodshop now I usuly do all my paitig and putting together of projects in the kitchen.lol gezz I talk a lot.lol on posts anyway in person I hardly say a thing. lol

    Dust Separator???

Thanks for all the input on this.. Been an interesting topic for me. I found a cheaper source for that dust deputy knock off and can get them for $10 each. LOL That said though, I bought the Dust Right system back a few months ago.. Seems like it's working pretty good and certainly better than no separator at all like I was using, LOL.. You all brought up a valid point and that was big bulky.. That's kinda my bigger complaint of the DR that I have.. It's about the size of my large shop vac.. I didn't think it was going to be that large when I got it.. I'd like something smaller that'd fit under the saw stand.. Seeing the Seyco dust vac system all contained to the saw and stand is something I like.. and I thought maybe the DD system was actually that small.. But you all are pointing out that isn't the case.. Wonder where Ray sources that little mini cyclone from for his vac system.. I might look into the DD that Les talks of.. I might be able to put that onto a small bucket..

    Double up

Thank you everyone for the kind words!! I never intended to sell much when I brought the saw down for the winter. Just play around with a couple of craft shows at the 55+ RV parks to get rid of the stuff I was making. It's taken on a life of it's own!! Iggy waved his Poplar board and turned me into a Puzzle Zombie, and I've sold over 75 at the shows in January & February...and still have some craft shows and a car show next month. Not what most of you do...but it's good for the places I'm showing now. I was talking with a few people showing them some pictures of other stuff I do...when a guy wanted me to make a cross for his daughter's collection. So I doubled the price of a puzzle and told him I would. After I finished it I sent him a photo and a list of shows I was doing. He told me which one he would pick it up at...and I put it on the table to take orders off of till he picked it up. I got three more orders from it! Now I have two weeks to fill the orders, crosses and dogs with names, and to replenish my stock before the next batch of shows. All I can say is...next year I'm bringing stock!!! I've made enough so far to pay the RV lot rent for 4 months next winter! Not bad for a hobby.

  38. Dick Blick, I have not heard that name for over 20 years. I owned a commercial printing plant for 30 years and had a great art department which used things from Dick Blick often. They have been around for over 50 years. Amazing! BTW, sorry for hi-jacking the thread.

  41. I'm not sure of your need to do this but maybe try to locate someone with a Sandflee type device and sand the board down to the thickness you need. I'm not at all comfortable with trying to plane plywood. It would only take one screw-up to have a real mess on your hands. Safety-wise, I'd not recommend it. If you are near a Woodcraft store, they might be able to surface sand it for you for a nominal fee.
