A request out of a coconut shell
Loskoppie and 8 others reacted to amazingkevin for a topic
A Haitian stockman and I were talking and he said he used a fret saw on coconuts in Haiti.i showed him what I do on the scroll saw so this is that. I snapped one piece turning to fast and broke a to thin of a letter removing the letters from the coconut.i put everything back in to keep things straight and dusted backing soda on the breaks and manipulated super glue on top of the backing soda crack. The backing soda speed up the crying and makes a mend strong as steel in minutes.Baker is the name. I,m pretty sure I used a fd scroll reverse#7 blade. It cut just fine but go at it slow and in speed.this is my first coconut. Got to practise!!!9 points -
Having sold commercial vacs in a former life I can confidently state that what is at issue is not suction (water lift) but airflow. Water lift only has to do with the weight a vac will pull; everything else has to do with airflow. In this case, restricting the airflow will cause the bucket collapse issue discussed here. I think Stoney's idea of a throttle valve is an elegant solution.4 points

I thought the second bucket could be used as a "liner" for the first bucket. You would probably need to trim the top so the number 2 bucket would sit in the number 1 bucket. "There once was a guy with a bucket................."2 points

Okay after a while the other bucket I setup with the Dust Deputy started collapsing. So I switch and put the HD DustStopper on the bucket and scrolled the rest of the night wit no collapse problem. This tell me the Dust Deputy creates a lot more vacuum in the bucket than the HD DustStopper. The Dust Deputy also separates out a lot more dust than the DustStopper does. As far a keeping debris and dust from going to the vac, the Dust Deputy, wins hands down as far as I am concerned, but the DustStopper does a fair job which is a lot better than none. In the near future, because I am having fun experimenting with this, I will buy some PVC part and put in a "release" valve and see what happens. What I think will happen is with the release valve in place, I will reduce the vacuum created in the Dust Deputy and reduce the amount of dust/debris it separates.. It will also probably increase the air noise of the setup which I do not want. With the Dust Deputy a second benefit I noticed was it was less noisy than the Dust Stopper set up. No meter test or any thing scientific, just what I thought I was or ah, wasn't hearing. This means it will work no better than the DustStopper and all my fun will be done for not!! P.S. Just to wanted to state also, I am using a Fein Dust Extractor, not a shop vac. It is made to be hooked up to tools to extract the dust and run with the tool. I use my shop vac for vacuum the shop floor. The Fein is pretty much dedicated to my scroll saw and my belt/random orbit sander when I use them.2 points
-
i think the cause is the way the air moves through the 2 different seperators. the duststopper is designed for the air to move quicker through it-like a thein baffle/seperator, and the DD creates a tornadic action with the air bunchin up at the bottom causing more vacuuum in the bucket2 points
-
I have a dust deputy with 5gal shop vac. No problem with the bucket. Am using the one that came with the DD. Instructions said to use a heavy duty bucket. The other bucket that came with it is made to use the wheels that they provide. So you can put the dust holding bucket in it and move it around if you need to. As always using the right tool, in this case right bucket, makes all the difference.2 points

combining my different crafts
Scrolling Steve and one other reacted to Dragonkort for a topic
had well some day I will learn how to get tI he pictures and words on here properly! lol I do many different kinds of crafts and sometimes I like to combine them together. I went through a time when I was making boxes and I had some wood I wanted to recycle so I decided to make some round boxes. I was also just getting started with the compound cutting, so I decided to incopurated some compound cutting with my boxes and make some pin cousions. I put some doll hair on the ladies and then glued a small piece of wire to one hand and then a piece of cloth to the other so she would look like she was sewing. then I glued the girl to the top edge of the box. Next I cut a some styrafome to shape, covered it with cloth and glued it to t he other side of the top and wal la!! a pincouson was born with a little storage airea for extral pins tape messure or what ever. lol then theres the mini doll bed with doll. I had made several poker boxes an had this bottom part of the box left over so I made a little doll bed with some trim from my sewing trim stash, then I took a small piece of fake fur and my tiney tiny little doll.her hands and face are made from old nylon. lol then back to my small bits of cloth box and a pillow and blanket were made. I glued some yellow felt to the bottom of the box for a mattress. and lastly the little turtle pin cousiion. a friend of mine found this pattern in an old book at the laibary. well of course we just had to make them lol some wood, cloth, felt and trim and we have a baby doll, doll bed mattress and pillow an d blaket.2 points -
Well, this morning I found another bucked, and decided to try using it. I mounted my Dust Deputy on a new lid that goes with that bucket. The bucked is a little shorter than the bigger paint bucket but made of the same thickness material. So far it is holding up, it it starts collapsing I may try what you say or go back to the HD setup I had.2 points
-
I guess I don't get what good it would do to put the bucket with the Dust Deputy attached inside the second bucket. Seems to me the inside bucket would still collapse you just wouldn't see it. What am I missing? I got 2 buckets with my Dust Deputy kit but only use one at a time. I thought the second was just for convenience.2 points

Everyone has their different style that works for them.. To me (being I'm a production minded cutter ) seems like a lot of extra cutting and blades to go through to get to a finished piece.. I'd have just started at one point and cut it out all in one shot.. Looks like you might have quite a project started.. be interested to see the process and the finished piece.2 points

I was at my local lumber supply shop and they had this setting on the tool showroom floor.. I took a picture of it then forgot until I was there again the other day. It's on sale now so maybe I'll pick up two or three.. https://www.jbtools.com/powermatic-1791331-micro-dust-air-filtration-system/?gclid=Cj0KCQiAtOjyBRC0ARIsAIpJyGPEieVsq6IH7DfZIMRS0Ie8eaHSlta_QLWvPSl56D3sEcgUyIzuxjYaAq0LEALw_wcB1 point

For Comparison
frankorona reacted to Foxfold for a topic
Well, just to see what the difference would be I did another 'cat' on my scrollsaw to compare it to the one I did with the router. Now bearing in mind this is only the second time I've used the router and the first time I've tried something this intricate I don't think it turned out. too badly. The wood quality is vastly different because of my 'mishap' with sanding the routered piece. My first love is my scrollsaw that's for sure but I think I'll keep doing stuff with the router as I find it quite fascinating to see what can be done with it.1 point -
Jim i know that the best way to take care of yourself in a bad flu area -is to keep washing your hands -stay away from people and wipe down stuff like door knobs etc. The masks are ok for doctors that work with the situation but should never be your first defense - not touching your face would be good advice . Im doing stuff like shopping when the stores are empty - and drinking alot of water !1 point

Jim you are so close to Indianapolis did you get the woodworking show at the fair grounds? I always think about it but then since it's in the winter I don't like take a chance on the weather. A 2 1/2 hour drive on I69 is not nice in one stretch that becomes an ice rink. This year would have been nice but I was giving a presentation on the Tablesaw at the local woodworking store.1 point -

Oh, I'm not too worried. It's just hard to make any monetary outlays when you have taken such a huge hit in the market over a 3 week period. And I blame it ALL on the news media blowing this whole coronavirus fiasco out whack. They are so hugely interested in taking our President down that they are just looking for any crisis that they can blow out of proportion.1 point -
you asked for pictures
barb.j.enders reacted to Dragonkort for a topic
you asked for pictures so here goes. now remember I' do easy things so be kind. lol The first one is a squarll ( I work in wood don't ask me to spell to! !) my younger cousin lives in California and someone told me they don't have squarlls there so I figured I d send her one. lol the second one is a clown lamp I made for a coworker years ago. then we have the lucet. you use it with yarn to make bets and such. I made several of these...one for each of my daughters and me and the craft box.lol I made the bag it goes in to.im real big on recycling thus the cow planter, candy dish or what ever. lol I got the patterns for the layered animals from the winterfiels colloction and I make all kinds of things with them.another thing I make with them are banks and pin cousions with a storage airea well somewhere I have a picture of the mouse pin cousin opened but I can't find it right now.lol to open it you just side the hind end up over. theres a dowl pin in the body and the back legs part. my mom asked me to make her a go away sign so that's the last picture. let me know if you wan to see any more.1 point -
Cute little bugger. What size hose des it use?1 point
-
Yea Paul I can't see your PVC setup but if you were to install say a 1 1/2" T fitting where you convert from your hose to PVC with a valve you could adjust how much relief you need. To say it another way you can regulate how much suction is required. You would also be relieving how much load you are putting on your vacuum.1 point

Welcome to the Village! Glad tò have ýou here. It's great you are keeping your dad's tradition.1 point -
I think the choking down to 3/4 loc-line is the main issue Paul. I would try putting a tee fitting in the system with a valve in the third orifice so as to see how much relief you need. You can also just glue your two buckets together. Just Kidding1 point

Matthias Wandel has some interesting videos on his website woodgears.ca. He has a great program for estimating gear sizes etc but I recall watching him cut gears. Very interesting guy. He has made a ton of neat shop tools out of wood.1 point

I really like listening to good guitarists, and Chet Atkins was one of my favorites. I found this Dearing pattern, added my own twist with the backing/frame. I shrunk the size down a little, cut the entire thing with Pegas spiral blades, and cut it on my Pegas saw. The little cuts on the guitar were tedious.1 point

Wow,that is outstanding work.As beautiful as Chet playing yakety axe...Joe another great player is Thom Bresh..He is the son of Merle Travis..I seen Bresh and Chet on Austin city limits a Few years ago.He was Chets guest on the show..Shortly after Thom Bresh was on for his own hour on Austin. He had Lane Brody on as a guest. They done Yellow Rose of Texas together. He is well worth a tube search.Gordie1 point

From what I can determine, the second bucket, is only a "cart" for the first bucket. You put casters on it and put the first bucket in it... Them you can remove the inside bucket to empty it.... not sure why that is advantage. I found no obstruction in my setup and my theory is I am connect this to my scroll saw dust collection. I only used 3/4" PVC that it is connecting to. May I need to bump that up to 1" or something, but it would go back down to 3/4" when it gets to my loc-line... I think the Dust Deputy has more suction than the HD one for some reason.... ?? Maybe that has nothing to do with it. For kicks I am going to try the bucket within a bucket and see what happens. If the buck does collapse, I should be able to tell because it take a long time to expand back out when I turn the vac off. I'm pretty sure I agree with Stoney on this one.1 point

How many box fans and filters could I buy with the cost of just one of these.. Now the box fan filter deal wouldn't have a electrostatic filter... but dang I bet it'd work bout as good.. I'd like to see this in action... The filter replacement is only $113.. LOL..1 point

I think you did a grand job on that. It's very nicely cut. I suggest you keep it to remind you in the years to come where you started. I kept my first silhouette, it's hung above my cooker in the kitchen and I still love it.
