    Hunter

Finally completed Hunter. This was the second time around. Had him about 3/4 done ,was sanding fuzzies and broke a chunk out. I did my Jag, but this one was even more fragile. Think I'll do an easy one next.

  2. My son and his wife met at a local tropical fish store where they both worked. I cut this Charles Hand trivet for their anniversary. It's two months away but I'm lousy at waiting so I'll probably give it to them early. I filled it a little over half way with black tinted epoxy resin. Still need to put a couple more coats of butcher block oil on the front. The back turned out looking pretty good too.

    Something new

First of all - it is much easier to make that it seems. I combined layered and compound type of projects. Recommened to use two types of wood or stains. Wood thickness - 1/8 inch Video of making 3D cube (YouTube) 3D cube pattern

  8. ok you asked for a few more pics. the first one is just a little ol toy car I got out of a woodworking mag I think. the second one was I think another plastic canvas project I got from somewhere and decided to convert them into a kitchen set. I made the potholders with my girls when they were little. And I found the white rose. lol I the frog picture frame and toy fish I got out of pattern mags or book. I have a couple of books on how to make articulik toys ( you know the toys with moving parts) and I have a big book of wirggly gigs I havent done to much out of those because they don't have pictures I can trace and im not sure I could put them together. but im going to try and do some after I get everything going again with spikes help. he can hopefuly help me get the pattern pieces the right size and help me put them all together. He keeps telling me these days that I don't have to try to just make do with what I have....we CAN like you know buy the right stuff to do my crafts with. lol Spike told me he'ed go in half with me if I want to take the class's at johnsons workbench for how to use the lath. that's my big getting out of the house goal. lol

    Branding Iron

I have always put stickers on all my projects. Decided that they might look a bit more professional with a brand. Things that I would oil and bees wax the stickers would not stay on. Found this iron on Etsy for about $80 including tax and shipping. Took close to a month to get because it came from China. I sure am pleased with it. https://www.etsy.com/listing/622156958/150w-300w-electric-power-iron-wooden-or?ref=shop_home_active_1&crt=1

  13. Here ya go Dan. I finally got back out in the shop today and cut the top piece so the inside can be seen. I took off all the patterns too. It's starting to take shape but I sure do see all the flaws. I hope if I ever make another one that I can do a better job. I know I'm my own worst critic but I hate when I screw up.

  14. well im good at showing pics of projects that come out nice, but no matter how long you' been scrolling or doing any woodcrafting there are time when the projct just doesn't come out right! Im trying to make steve goods elephant cell phone charger thingy. (don't you just love my precise detaled way of talking? lol) Its another one of those slot and tab patterns I love so much but can never seem to get the slots and tabs cut out so the tabs fit into the slots. lol I cut out 8 of these things. 4 the size of the pattern and 4 after I inlarged the pattern. now I tried to do some fignatling to get the thing together and after about half an hour spike came in to see what I was doing. by this time I was very frustrated to say the least. lol so he said ok you go sit down and let me see what I can do. He did a good job of making every thing fit together and filled in the holes so once painted you wouldn't know the slots and tabs hadn't work out right and that was nice. well about 5 this morning I woke up and since I couldn't go back to sleep I decided to paint the elephants....they look like elephants but they really don't look all that good. I cerently couldn't sell them so now I have 6 of these cut out and im trying to figue out how I might salvage them. So far iv only come up with one idea and I don't know if it will work or not. first i'll have to get the tabs to fit into the slots as best as possible and then before glueing every thing together i'll take my spray adheasive and glue some fabric to the outsides of the project, hopefuly hiding all the fignaglie to get it together. if it still doesn't look good i'll keep the little painted one and the enlarged one im putting fabric on for my own use and just have to use the wood from the others to make magnets or other small parts for other projects. When I get the fabric covered one done I'll load up both pictures no matter how they turn out. I think its good for new scrollers / woodworkers to see that even those of us who hav been doing it for years cant always get the project right the first time around!!! lol

Does look good. I paid about that much and mine I have to heat with a torch! I have to experiment with it every time I use it to get the right temp. I finally, one day, branded a piece of veneer about 10 times and then cut the veneer nicely on pieces. I epoxy the branded veneer on to the project some where.

  16. Seems like you could put some sort of T or Y in this from the plumbing department of a hardware store.. The PVC stuff.. seems like you should be able to come up with something without cutting the hose.. May need to clamp a rubber sleeve / boot to the PVC etc in some way but I'd try doing it without cutting into the hose.. I've heard several claim this vac is louder than expected.. I wonder how they came up with their "quiet vac that runs at only 62 db " data that is advertised on their website.. 62 db from 10 ft away? I mean... people are mounting this system up to the saw stand.. so in my mind it should be 62 db at the front of the saw where the operator would be...

Looks good! Couldn’t glue the broken piece back? On projects like these I use a propane torch turned down low and burn the fuzzies off the back. Don’t take but few seconds.

  19. I've been meaning to do a video for a while and finally did it. Seeing a lot of questions, especially within Facebook group page from new scrollers asking how others mount their patterns to the wood so I wanted to make this to share. You old time veteran scrollers can just skip it.

Jim, Can't answer you on thermostat. Species of wood definitely makes a difference. Soft burns faster. Hard to hold it straight and get a perfect brand.

  22. Like Kevin said, lots of ways to split the line. A simple T with three barbed fittings. Even with my Festool vac running at its lowest speed the biggest noise I get is at the nozzles themselves. Especially now that I put a new bag in my vac. So my point, even if you get the vacuum real quiet the main noise will be right in front of your face at the nozzle or hose end.

  23. Mike, Can you show a picture of how you mount the underside. I just bought the Seyco dust collector and still haven't used it much, but know that something has to change for it to be more stable. Barb

Looks great Dave. is the iron thermostatically controlled so you can leave it plugged in and it won't get too hot? How many practice runs did it take to learn how long to hold the iron on the wood? I imagine each species of wood may be different, softer wood vs harder wood - true?

  25. I had that problem, the wood stove took care of two totes of problem pieces. And of course I turned the lights out in the shop, and low and behold a few days later I had more little pieces of wood - what they breed when the lights are out?? Now that I have started trying to lean intarsia, the type of wood scraps are better or more varied, and intarsia allows for me to use the smaller pieces - well when I have built up a larger qty of smaller pieces - I hope, that's my story and I'm sticking to it

I think that is just for the stamp. The size of the stamp also makes a difference. Then you have to buy the iron.

  28. Here's a fun project if you have little kids around (maybe even for yourself). This is a flower that can be slowly put together as Spring approaches. This year (2020) Spring starts on March 19. So if you want to raise anticipation for this great day, you can have your child put one piece of the puzzle together each day. There are 10 pieces so this year you would start on March 10. You could start with any of the flower petals or the leaves. Your choice. On the 19th you should have a completed potted flower. The flower disassembles (even the base) for packing away for next year. I cut mine from 3/4" pine and the base from poplar. I didn't paint it, but it might be a stunning piece if painted different colors. Again, your choice. To get the pot to stand up on the base I put a 1/4" dowel in the base sticking up about an inch and drilled a 1/4" hole in the bottom of the pot. Hey! Maybe this could start a new tradition -- A Count Up To SPRING!! Download the Free pattern from my Free Page

  29. At the moment just before you get tired of moving it or tripping over it. The corollary to that is that it will become useful again, the moment after you've pitched it in the woodstove.

  30. My question is a simple one. Well maybe not. What do folks do with all the odd shaped scraps that they end up with. I make a lot of baskets and bowls etc. and I seem to end up with a ton of scraps that have had round shapes cut out of them leaving just the corners and whatever might have survived the cutting around the outside. I now have a plastic tub of them and I just can't bring myself to toss them all out. At what point does a cutoff become a useless scrap?

  32. I am finally getting somewhere with this never-ending project. I sort of wish I had never started it now. It's been a real tough one trying to get all the right circumference circles and making everything fit within the parameters of 10" wide walnut. I should have just bought a piece of 12" and milled it myself but I thought this would be the better way but trying to make all the pieces fit has been tough. Anyway, I finally have gotten to this point. I dry fitted it today and tomorrow, I'll start doing the decorative routing. Then, it's a matter of sanding, gluing and finishing. The side panels are really tight around their tops so I'm going to have to relieve them a bit so they will all fit but it's just a matter of sanding the inside edges. I'll sure be glad when it's done. I have so many other things that I'm anxious to start on.

  33. The pattern is by Sue Mey and purchased from her website except the little handle is a Diana Thompson compound cut pattern. It is 5" high and 8" in diameter. I used 1/4" Baltic Birch plywood and cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using #1 MGT blades. Comments welcome.

  34. I know you folks are probably getting bored with my pics but I just thought I'd put up a couple more to start the year off. I'm making a bowl/basket/centerpiece for our dining table and I'm really having a hard time getting it done with all the end of year interruptions by my partner in life. Anyway, tomorrow, I'm going to set up my table saw and cut the blanks for the top, bottom and 2 center holders for these 20 side panels. Each one of these represents almost an hour of cutting. The hard part now is figuring out the circumference for those pieces so that all 20 of these will fit. In between doing these, I had to do 8 more for a votive holder gift that I showed the other day. I'll soon be able to post pics of a finished piece. I hope anyway. Thanks for your patience.

  35. . I know they have 3/4" Y's but I want to split it at the port that goes from the cyclone to the underside of the table. That is quite large, maybe 11/2" or so. I have no need to split the LocLine. I need a way to add a 3/4" to the larger port. Say a Y with a base large enough to fit the cyclone and one leg the size of the existing hose and the other leg a size I can reduce for the top collection tube.

    Well, I'm getting closer!

WOW! beautiful project. I would do a Satin finish no gloss. I agree with Dan, the finish will help to keep it from being a major dust magnet.

  40. Yeah, I'm searching for a Y locally because then I know it will fit, I've seen some that look like they'd work but they are in boat supply places for bilge or water removal purposes (I think). Not many boat supply stores here in the desert. I won't cut into the hose because it's too thin for my comfort. I may tap into the cyclone tube itself just ahead of the existing tube. I think I can safely go 3/4". I plan to run sched. 40 pvc to the saw and I ordered 3/4" Loc-Line with nozzle for the side opposite the Dewalt blower. I did see a setup online that worked good enough to not even use the bellows blower but I like the idea of having the option to use both. The vac is louder than I hoped but it is 4" diameter (give or take) and I'm going to try putting a 4" pvc elbow over the exhaust end, run approx. 22" to the floor with straight pc add another elbow and a short straight pc that will run along the floor and away from the front of the saw. then I'm going to play with some baffle type material for sound deadening without restricting the exhaust flow. I don't want to put it in a cabinet due to size restrictions and heat build up.Pvc is cheap and easy to work with so if it's a failure no big deal.

  45. your right trackman, lol iv had several of those over the years....now you would think I would just forget about those pesty little old elephant phone charges but nnnoooo lol Iv dug out the spray adheistve and pick out some cloth to see if I can do some damage control lol some times it works and sometimes it doesn't. then I'll work on something else for awhile and then torment my self with those pesty little elephants again and again and again until I get it right, run out of wood, or drive every living thing is this house batty!!! lol but this time iv been able to get some expert advice and help. usuly I just have to keep playing with it and talking to spike who normaly isn't quite sure what im talking about. lol oh hes good at building things and fixing things but this craft stuff sort of takes him a minute or two to grasp what im trying to do. lol hes better at it now then he was years ago. the man has learned a lot about woodcrafts and I don't know how many times hes torn my sewing machine apart and fixed it for me. lol and to think 15 years ago he didn't even know what a craft was. lol

  47. I love your pattern!! My grandson wants to make things every time he comes out. lol and he bugs his parents to let him come to grandmas house for the weekend all the time because grandma does crafts with him!!! Now my youngest child is like 35 so I really don't have or can't find the really easy scroll saw patterns I use to have. This will be the perfect project for his next visit. Connor is 7 so I cut everything out, but he traces the pattern to tracing paper then traces the pattern onto the wood. I cut it and hes excited about his next project because grandma said he could use the electric sander. lol In Connors words sanding isn't fun. until now hes had to sand by hand. so thank you much bagetta . next time he comes out we'll make this and i'll take a picture of the finished project and put it up!!!
