  2. I live in a neighborhood with quite a few walkers and cyclers, many with children. My daughter and her family live on our street and they taped these flyers to mailboxes today. One thing I love about woodworking is how so many things, like this one, are an excuse to go out to the shop and make something. Also love the sense of community of this idea, even if we're isolated.

  3. Got the pattern from Steve Good and modified it a little, now when I can get out of quarantine, I will get some food for them.

  4. Since we have to quarantine for 14 days I have lot’s of time to spend in the shop. Got a commission work done (deer from Alexfox) Penny Drop game is very popular with the kids out of school. Keeping busy and out of problem, we get the out of jail card on April Fool Day.

  5. Since I have a lot of shop time do to the social isolation protocols and no real pressing projects, I have been experimenting in the shop. I did the pile of bears but wanted to little bears to be proud of the bigger bears. I cut the little bears first and then put the board through the planner pattern side down. Just a little different. Thanks to Iggy for the pattern.

    Danish Oil Tip

I use a fair bit of Danish Oil and I always put some into a smaller container because I find that by brushing it straight from the tin it tends to get thick and gluggy by the time I am half way down the tin. Well 2 - 3 months ago I bought a couple of small jars with screw top lids and I half filled one with oil and when I had finished using it for the day I put it in the fridge ( we have a spare in the garage ) just to see what would happen. Well I have cut and oiled 15 mobile phone holders with 3 coats of oil each and just had to top it up a little once. Normally it would have had to be thrown away a couple of time by now. So ask you wife if you are allowed to put a small jar of Danish Oil in the fridge and give it a go. By the way when I say small jar I mean small it is only a couple of inches tall. Give it a go what do you have to lose. Marg

  9. I am retired from Corp America and live out in the woods so this social distancing is not a big change for me. Decided last night to make today a dog day and prepped and laid out 15 HB dogs. So after a cup of coffee this morning I started, far so good, you sort of get into a rhythm. Luckily my daughter just came into the shop with some fresh peanutbutter cookies so I had to take a break. I hope you and your families are all safe and blessed by the Lord.

    Danish Oil Tip

That is great info ! Thank you for sharing! I now have a better excuse to get a fridge in my shop other than keep my beer cold!

  11. Yes that is what they're doing... I skip the tape layer.. I don't like tape on top of a pattern as for me it seems to put a line of sawdust in front of my line or something.. and makes the line harder to see " for me" Maybe my style of cutting or the blades I use... not sure... but I just don't like tape on top.. so I avoid it when I can.. there are times I need it for strength or something but for the most part I don't use tape..

  14. Who likes doing large puzzles? You know, the kind with lots of little tiny pieces. Well this might be for you. It will take a bit of time to cut out. Use 1/8" or 1/4" baltic birch ply to make your job easier. The real fun begins when you try to put it together. Free Pattern

    How to finish?

Not sure if this is the right forum, so I apologize if I am in error. I have several of these cut out. 1/8” BB ply is the material. I don’t know how I should finish them. Paint each butterfly, stain the whole thing the same, BLO the whole thing, I don’t know. I can tell you I would rather have dental work done than paint. what do you all think??

    Danish Oil Tip

Maybe that is why I've gone through my whole gallon this time... No frig.. but it stays out in the cold shop ( no heat ) and this time my gallon is almost gone... and that usually doesn't happen for me.. Though another thing I've done too is to shake the can up good before opening / using it.. and when mine goes bad it's more about getting moisture I think.. as it gets thick but also turns a milky look to it like a small amount of water got in from the can sweating.. I need a new can.. but not going out to get one until the Corvid19 disappears... May have to mail order me one.. I get about 4-6 months to a gallon.. and only have about a pint or maybe a little more in my tin now..

  21. It helps a lot in reading long stories to break them up into paragraphs instead of having one long paragraph. When posting here all you need do is press "Enter" to move to a new paragraph or line like this. Nothing at all wrong with long stories. As a pastor, I do them all the time!

  22. So, if I understand how this works... You guys use the shipping labels instead of the spray adhesive? Print pattern on shipping label, prepare wood, put shelf liner on wood, put shipping label pattern on shelf paper and cut. And the OP adds a layer of shipping tape before cutting. Correct? Thanks in advance

Dan, did I spot a vein that you missed or is that the way the pattern is? Down at the bottom, to the right of center there is no vein to match the one on the left.

Marg, I have no idea where the pattern came from. It’s been in my pattern file for years. It has no name on it. I cut one about 6 or 8 years ago. When I cut a project, I always make an extra copy for future use. I don’t usually record where the pattern came from.

    How to finish?

Personally I would use Tung Oil. I also now have a spray can of quite sheer gold that I would use. It give a nice "sparkle" to things without really changing the colour. I used it on my layered dragonflies. Don't know if it shows up very well but here are the dragonflies I did.

    Laugh when you can

Laugh when you can, it’s good medicine. I have no idea where the pattern came from, it has been in my pattern file for years. 1/2” Maple with a Cherry veneer, MDF core plywood backer. I cut two. I finished these several weeks ago. I set them aside waiting for my finish to arrive via mail order. When I went to finish them, they had both warped. I had already posted them on my Etsy store. I removed them from Etsy and stuck them in a drawer. I came back a week later, and they both had flattened out! I sprayed my lacquer and they are both fine now!

  33. A wonderful idea. Great for the little ones. Dianne put a stuffed bear in our window. That little bear is one I had when very young. It must now be over 70 years old.

    How to finish?

Hey Mathew, it might look good painted, but I am not a painter, nor do I like staining BB. If this were mine, I might try a painted backer. I definitely would soak the the piece in a 50/50 mixture of boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits. Then when dry, topcoat with Deft semi gloss spray lacquer. Good luck with what ever you decide to do.

  50. My first attempt at the winter bear, from Wood magazine - as compared to the custom bears I did for my wife's relatives 50th wedding anniversary. She's a retired RN and he's a retired contractor that rebuilds old 1950's Ford Thunderbirds as a hobby.
