Picture Frame that Simulates a Window
heppnerguy and 7 others reacted to Frank Pellow for a topic
While working on Sue Mey's 'Farm Viewed Through a Window': I realized that just the frame portion of the pattern would make a good picture frame. Therefore, I expanded that portion of Sue's pattern sufficiently to hold a 8 inch by 10 inch photo. Next, I cut the frame out of 6mm thick Baltic Birch plywood. I decided to try one more thing and to arrange things so that the picture in the frame was translucent and that there was a light source behind it. The photo chosen for the prototype is one of the sunset over Lake Pivabiska looking out from the porch at our cabin. I simply printed it on plain 'letter' size paper, then sprayed it with three coats of Rust-oleum clear satin rattle-can stuff: I glued some narrow strips of 3mm thick Baltic Birch plywood to the back in order to keep the photo in place: Then, two screw eyes were screwed into the top edge of the frame, some wire was attached to the eyes, and the frame was hung in our kitchen window: Now, I can enjoy the sunset at our camp without even being there. That's good, because we might not get there this summer. My next experiment will be with building a lighted box to place behind the frame behind the frame8 points -
just some more of my finished wood crafts
frankorona and 5 others reacted to Dragonkort for a topic
well its been a busy couple of days even if I haven't been able to get into the workshop. you see im trying to reorganize my craft room and I can only expend energy for a short time before I have to stop sit and try to catch my breath !! lol but im beginning to see a light at the end of my craft room reorganizing. lol (spike spent a week last month reorganizing my wood shop its so nice now!!! now were just waiting to see how long it will take me to make it a mess again lol) but I thought id put up some pics of some more of my finished projecrs. now I only started deleting the pics from my desk top that iv put up so you might see something iv already put up once before. now heres my first compound cut project. I used the scrap wood from the dalphan to make the base and water waves.the next one is a seagull sitting on what hopefuly looks like one of the pillars that boats are tied to and I added a sea shell just because lol. the base is a piece of drift wood my friend gave me after she went up north and was walking along one of the beaches up there. then theres the snowmen and deer I made. I used a piece of a fake pine tree for the tree . the tree is sitting in a little brown wooden bead. bead juelwy is one craft that I am NOT good at. lol the friend I taught to scroll tried to teach me how to do beading....it was NOT a pretty sight!! lol then theres the last 2 signs.. im going to try to reduce the size of the don't text and drive pattern so I can make some with a string or something on it for people to hang from there rear view mirrors. and last but not least is the no horseing around sign. I am hoping that tomorrow I will be able to at least put some patterns on wood! lol I have several different patterns printed out that I want to make. and I still have to finish carving my little bull dog and then paint it and my little kitten.6 points -
My take on Pile of Bears
Matt B and 4 others reacted to don in brooklin on for a topic
Since I have a lot of shop time do to the social isolation protocols and no real pressing projects, I have been experimenting in the shop. I did the pile of bears but wanted to little bears to be proud of the bigger bears. I cut the little bears first and then put the board through the planner pattern side down. Just a little different. Thanks to Iggy for the pattern.5 points -
I believe that is why Hegner put the slot in the table. It really does take the strain off you neck! Now all we need are some pictures of what you are cutting. I will say, watching the PS wood video I would not want to go through that process if I were cutting a 500 hole fretwork. I think it is much faster on the Hegner.5 points

I am retired from Corp America and live out in the woods so this social distancing is not a big change for me. Decided last night to make today a dog day and prepped and laid out 15 HB dogs. So after a cup of coffee this morning I started, far so good, you sort of get into a rhythm. Luckily my daughter just came into the shop with some fresh peanutbutter cookies so I had to take a break. I hope you and your families are all safe and blessed by the Lord.5 points

I recently purchased two magnetic sewing machine lights to use on my scroll saw. I have been quite pleased with them. Bright white light, and they don't move. I highly recommend these. They come with steel disks that you can stick on to any smooth surface so the magnet mount will work even on aluminum, plastic, or glass or another smooth surface. These cost me $12 US each. Well worth the money. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07N1MK51J/3 points

Social Isolation Bear Hunt
Phantom Scroller and 2 others reacted to Charlie E for a topic
I live in a neighborhood with quite a few walkers and cyclers, many with children. My daughter and her family live on our street and they taped these flyers to mailboxes today. One thing I love about woodworking is how so many things, like this one, are an excuse to go out to the shop and make something. Also love the sense of community of this idea, even if we're isolated.3 points -

Doug, welcome. Just some advice, it is not wise to use your email address as your user name, nor to post your email address in a thread on the forum. You open yourself up to receiving lots of spam and maybe computer virus's. I would strongly suggest you message @Travis to see if it can be changed....3 points -
I think what you're describing is how I watched them do this on the PS Woods saw demo video... which I've heard is much like a Hegner..3 points
-
I have never done that but I think I'll try that. Removing and replacing the bottom clamp is quick and easy. Some Hegner user here suggested removing the boss at the rear of the saw. Which I have done. It raises the arm considerably. I think I'll try your method. The Hegner clamps are easy. Thanks for the suggestion.3 points

Before & After

Just an example of what can be found in rescued wood. The wood was found in a fencing company dumpster that I have raiding rights to. I believe it is belinga, not positive though. Our hoggish friend is 3/4" thick, 2-3/4" tall and 4-3/4" long. Cut on the scrollsaw-- It does not take very long to dull the blade cutting this wood. It has a light coat of walnut oil to bring out the grain.2 points -

However, I have a delta as well and use the Harborfreight magnifier light comes with a nice clamp that works well on my cart. https://www.harborfreight.com/fluorescent-magnifying-lamp-60643.html Oh and welcome to the Village - may want to post an intro as well1 point -

Maybe that is why I've gone through my whole gallon this time... No frig.. but it stays out in the cold shop ( no heat ) and this time my gallon is almost gone... and that usually doesn't happen for me.. Though another thing I've done too is to shake the can up good before opening / using it.. and when mine goes bad it's more about getting moisture I think.. as it gets thick but also turns a milky look to it like a small amount of water got in from the can sweating.. I need a new can.. but not going out to get one until the Corvid19 disappears... May have to mail order me one.. I get about 4-6 months to a gallon.. and only have about a pint or maybe a little more in my tin now..1 point

gluing using wax paper
Rolf reacted to barb.j.enders for a topic
I have been saving the paper part of the shelf liner and use that for any glue I use. When done, just scrunch it up and throw it away. Or I have left the glue to dry and it will just "shatter" into small bits, throw that away and still have a piece of paper to use. I use the side that the shelf line was stuck to, not the "back" side.1 point -

Jay, some time get a pack of Pegas 2/0 spirals. Their size seems to be just between the FD 3/0 and 2/0. At least that is how they feel to me. Since I tried them, my go to spirals are Pegas 2/0 most used and FD 3/0 for smallest used.1 point -

Old & New - Scroll Saw Challenge
John B reacted to RabidAlien for a topic
Got started, technically, back in Nov 2017 (according to the photo filename). I'd helped my wife's grandfather renovate our first house back in 2007/2008, and have always loved working with my hands to create something, so when we moved back in, he told me to hang on to an old table saw and band saw ("if I need 'em, I know where to find 'em." They lived a mile away from us.). I made a Texas state flag out of a section of old fence, just adding some support to the back and painting it, and got started making smaller sized flags, then got the band saw up and running again and tried making a sign I'd seen on Pinterest, but ran into a problem with the inside loop on the "L". So I found an old Dremel 57-2 listed at a garage sale, picked it up for $25, and never looked back. The band saw hasn't been used since, and was even sold to make room for other stuff. Most recent were a couple of gifts, one for my daughter (I stack-cut the dragon scene, and have one at work as well) and one for my wife for our anniversary.1 point -

I got my 1st scrollsaw from Aldi's just over a year ago as I thought it might be interesting to try something new in my retirement. I was quite happy with it for a month or so then I discovered this forum and that was it. After seeing some of the amazing things that people cut on here, I bought a new saw and I've gone from silhouettes and simple cut outs to my beloved Gorilla. I would never have imagined in a lifetime that I could do something like this. I'm totally addicted.1 point

Dewalt vs. Delta Question
scrollingforsanity reacted to John Shaffner for a topic
Josh, AFAIK the Dewalt 788 and Delta 40-694 are essentially the same saw, different paint. The Dewalt was designed by Excaliber originally and then the rights were sold to Black and Decker/Dewalt. There was a big consolidation of several tool companies a few yrs. ago, including B&D/Dewalt and Delta, among others. Then, some were sold off and that's when the Delta saw showed up. Not sure what happened there. anyway, I've had my Dewal 788 for 8 or 9 yrs, it has several thousand hours on it and works just fine. I have had the problem with the switch a couple times, but pull it off and blow it out with the compressor. Got my 788 through Grizzly for about $500 with stand and light, shipped. Hope this helps, John1 point -
Dewalt vs. Delta Question
scrollingforsanity reacted to rjR for a topic
My DW is about 4-1/2 years of relatively hard use. Made many hickory flooring nameplates! That will test a saw! I hated the lamp from day one-- I have made adaptors and use an actual spring arm desk lamp! Then I found the wonderful led now at Rockler for $50!--Has GLASS magnifier built in! GREAT LIGHT! The blade clamps are not great; but, I even looked at the Excaliber and those are a little better, not a bunch! I have no experience on a bigger Delta, but 2 of my sons have 16" ones and I did not like either of the 2--Sorry do not know model #'s. They might be great saws too, I just did not like how they felt and ran! I had used an old Dremel for several years and actually liked it better than the Deltas. The DW is in my opinion a better saw for me than any of the 3 perviously mentioned ones. I would buy another DW #788 at this time. But, I would see if I could test drive a few comparable ones just to see what fits me best! Do what fits for you, not for anyone else! Please the person in the mirror!1 point -
