  2. While working on Sue Mey's 'Farm Viewed Through a Window': I realized that just the frame portion of the pattern would make a good picture frame. Therefore, I expanded that portion of Sue's pattern sufficiently to hold a 8 inch by 10 inch photo. Next, I cut the frame out of 6mm thick Baltic Birch plywood. I decided to try one more thing and to arrange things so that the picture in the frame was translucent and that there was a light source behind it. The photo chosen for the prototype is one of the sunset over Lake Pivabiska looking out from the porch at our cabin. I simply printed it on plain 'letter' size paper, then sprayed it with three coats of Rust-oleum clear satin rattle-can stuff: I glued some narrow strips of 3mm thick Baltic Birch plywood to the back in order to keep the photo in place: Then, two screw eyes were screwed into the top edge of the frame, some wire was attached to the eyes, and the frame was hung in our kitchen window: Now, I can enjoy the sunset at our camp without even being there. That's good, because we might not get there this summer. My next experiment will be with building a lighted box to place behind the frame behind the frame

  3. Well I had quality time in the shop today amid all the quarantined and shut downs. Nice quiet area for a change, no back to back trains , train horns ,car horns ,drive by traffics. I felt at ease to do as promised and knock out some of his patterns. Still more to cut maybe tomorrow, everyday is different. Thanks for looking.cut with FD scroll reverse#9&#7 blades on the DeWalt type 1 over 20 years old. It got it's work out since I bought it . Looking for the water cooled one coming out in the future, maybe!!! Lol

  4. I seem to be more busy now I'm in lock down than I was before, perhaps it's because it's Spring and I'm moving and cutting hedges already also working in the shop . Here's a couple of things one on the CNC and tray scrolled. Have fun in lock down people and stay safe. Roly

    Before & After

Just an example of what can be found in rescued wood. The wood was found in a fencing company dumpster that I have raiding rights to. I believe it is belinga, not positive though. Our hoggish friend is 3/4" thick, 2-3/4" tall and 4-3/4" long. Cut on the scrollsaw-- It does not take very long to dull the blade cutting this wood. It has a light coat of walnut oil to bring out the grain.

  6. I recently purchased two magnetic sewing machine lights to use on my scroll saw. I have been quite pleased with them. Bright white light, and they don't move. I highly recommend these. They come with steel disks that you can stick on to any smooth surface so the magnet mount will work even on aluminum, plastic, or glass or another smooth surface. These cost me $12 US each. Well worth the money. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07N1MK51J/

  7. This is a continuation of my thread on the general scroll saw forum. Finished up the pattern. Still haven't framed or applied a general finish. It was interesting using spirals. For the type of pattern, don't think I would ever use a straight blade no matter what the size. Throughout, the spirals would bend on me at the clamping area, thus weakening the blade and slowing down the process from going from drill hole to drill hole for cutting. Don't know if it's just my particular saw (Delta) or I'm just over tightening the thumbscrew too much. I don't fear spirals anymore and will attempt a pattern that requires following the lines rather than cut out the blackened area.

I have not modified my Hegner,,,, other than put a Masonite tabletop on it to give me the availability to easily have a little bigger table top, I have not changed anything. I love mine the way it is.

  9. well since I was d just sitting here I figured id put up a few more pictures, one of my favorit holidays is Halloween frinkinstine hold dractula is a decoration I made a few years ago. now the cementary I wish the pics were better I made when the kids were little...they drew the pictures and I cut them out and we painte them together. theres the cemintary sign and the hounted house on the right on the left is frankinstine and that little black thing in the door way of the sign is a black cat. lol theres a few cematary stones back there to that you really can't see. I love and collect dragons so of course I had to h ae a dragon planter. the standing green dragon is the first thing I made after the ex left and I was in my trailer not to bad considering it had been almost 5 years since I had done any kinds of crafts lol the cats near the front door is a bird feeder I thought was cute. I had wanted to sit in my chair and watch the birds eating but as you can see theres no food in it, that's because when I put food in it the squralls have a ball!! lol I tried putting a big bisket in it one day in the hopes that that would be to big for the squrrals but it was gone within an hour.... we also put a bird seed bell in it and that to dissaperad. im trying to think of a way to put a screen over it that the birds can eat out of while keeping the squarrls away. oh you'll notice on the green dragon a big long crack in his tail....that's because hes made out of some wood I found along the road an some left over wood my dad had down in the basement. lol when I made drarco we were living on what I could earn on mimum wage and what the kids father sent in child suport lol the Halloween decorations were also from found wood. the kids now grown hate our little cematary decorations lol but I will always love them more then any decorations iv bought or made since and they go up every year to my kids distain !!!lol most of the patterns I get from the winterfiel collection or the 2 scroll saw magizines I used to get.and of course those I get from my friend or try to make out of pictures from my other craft magizines. if there a picture I can take apart and then trace into something eles it becomes a wood craft project!! the clock I made in honer of my dad who just loved his beer!! lol I just wish he would have still been alive when I got the pattern. im thinking of making a picture frame instead of a clock and then trying to see if I can find a way to make the beer bottle look like a papst blue ribbin beer bottle since that's what dad drank, he would have gotten a kick out that.

  11. Not a mac user, but this is what I saw. There is no .dmg file for macOS for the current Inkscape version at this time. Please use Inkscape 0.92.2 on macOS <= 10.14. For Catalina (macOS 10.15), there is no stable version available, please use the latest beta version of Inkscape 1.0 or the development version. I'd give the beta a try since it's free anyway. Always can delete.

  12. I went to H/F and purchased the Bauer 5" ROS sander that is on sale right now for $24.95. I am very happy to say, it is all that I had hoped and more. It is lightweight, quiet, smooth and has 6 speeds. It uses the Velcro type paper, 8 holes for dust so the paper that I had from my cheapy H/F sander works with it. The biggest thing is the variable speed. I was using it on #4 and it was just perfect at that speed. I did notice that if you tried to use it at the lowest 2 speeds, it would bog and stop with very little pressure on the plate. But, all-in-all, I'm really happy. Especially with the price. It also has a dust collector on it and it works great. I do recommend removing it and lubing the o-ring that holds it on. It's a bear taking it off the first time. I plan to also buy the 1/4 sheet finishing sander that they have on sale but maybe next month. I've exceeded my tool budget for this month already.

  13. I live in a neighborhood with quite a few walkers and cyclers, many with children. My daughter and her family live on our street and they taped these flyers to mailboxes today. One thing I love about woodworking is how so many things, like this one, are an excuse to go out to the shop and make something. Also love the sense of community of this idea, even if we're isolated.

  16. Yes I’ve read this is a popular game at this time. We live in the country or we’d participate too. You do a lot of fun things for the kids Charlie I remember when you did your Halloween skeletons on the front yard and changed them up daily. Well done again.

    one for a friend

I made this Steve Good pattern for a nephew of mine that worked at a paper mill until he was about 70 years old and finally retired last month. He had big plans for traveling and being with many friends and relatives for a big get together, retirement party when the virus thing hit and plans had to be delayed. Both his wife and he were very upset as it was to be a big celebration and the disappointment set in and depression was surfacing. When I read about how much disappointment they were feeling and knowing he is a big fan of custom cars and owns one himself, as well as in a custom car club for years, I knew I just had to make this for him and try to bring his mood up just a little. He received it today and it worked. He was very pleased with such a small jester as this and it sure made it worth the small effort it was for me to do it for him. These things is worth more to me than a $600 craft show. The satisfaction of knowing that this one small piece of scrolling will probably remind him of me, every time he sees it. What a great pat on the back that will be for me, even though I will not know when that happens. I can't express the big lift it was for me when he emailed me and posted it on Facebook. 27. Who likes doing large puzzles? You know, the kind with lots of little tiny pieces. Well this might be for you. It will take a bit of time to cut out. Use 1/8" or 1/4" baltic birch ply to make your job easier. The real fun begins when you try to put it together. Free Pattern

The single greatest thing you can do for ease of use is to move the arm bump stop on the back down about an inch. That nets you so much extra space that I can generally see the blade and the hole I want quite easily. it is a pain to cut, drill, and tap cast iron though.

Maybe this only looks 'Good' on Baltic Birch as I do remember Pine end grain looking Terrible. Just my 13 cents worth................Danny :+} Oh yea Kevin this Plaque looks Outstanding. I would Proudly hang this....

    Paw Puzzle

There's nothing like a puzzle to keep the mind busy. Here's fun little puzzle I'm sure your dog will appreciate. The Paw Puzzle can be cut as a flat puzzle using 1/4" birch ply, or if you want to go thicker, you can make it as a stand up puzzle out of 3/4" wood. In any event I'm sure your Paw Patrol followers will love doing it. Free pattern

  48. I knew I needed to find a different outlet for my enjoyment in woodworking, so bought the Wen. My first was really bad. I knew nothing about how to cut. Hadn't even watched Steve Good's intro series. Pinned blade that came from with the saw. Discovered later that it was a #9. I've since upgraded to a Delta and have a bit more understanding of blades and how to cut. My latest completed project. I have a 4-5 other not puzzles in various stages of completion. I like the puzzles because I can finish in a a of hours. I suffer senior onset attention deficit disorder.

  50. I got my 1st scrollsaw from Aldi's just over a year ago as I thought it might be interesting to try something new in my retirement. I was quite happy with it for a month or so then I discovered this forum and that was it. After seeing some of the amazing things that people cut on here, I bought a new saw and I've gone from silhouettes and simple cut outs to my beloved Gorilla. I would never have imagined in a lifetime that I could do something like this. I'm totally addicted.
