  1. Today I finish a project. After thinking I am done, I thought of another branch of the service that was represented in my family. I remembered my brother-in-law was in the Air Force. So I may do one for him. I already showed the one for me USMC. My older brother received a draft notice just as I was finishing my enlistment in the Marines, so he went and joined the Army and my son, since he was around 12 years old had the goal of flying fighter jets. He never varied from that goal.. and did just that. Retired as an F-18 Superhornet, and Navy Combat pilot. He will never understand how proud I am of him for his accomplishments. I made these and will get them sent to them after this virus war is over..... Mine: My Brother"s: My Son's:

  2. These will go to the fish lady at the Winn Dixie. She,s very personable to me which I like and will reward her with these. I,m sure it will make her day!!! Close grain wood could be mahogony with Walnut base. I,m real low on plywood so I guess I,LL get into hoarded hardwoods now. Cut with scroll reverse FD#9 blade 10.75" long x 1.5"tall. No stain or clear.

  5. (severed heads not included) Someone bought the skull I'd made and displayed at work last November, so I figured I should probably get started on a replacement....before October rolled around. I couldn't decide on any one pattern, so I settled on six. Most were really quick cuts, none were incredibly difficult (Ash's chainsaw blade will teach one how to cut corners, if nothing else!), and I blew through all six this weekend. They're currently stained, and I've got frames notched and ready to cut to size. They're all 3/16" ply, scraps from other projects, no idea if they're BB or just a generic Lowes ply. Whatever they are.....its always good to take a step back from the long, intricate, detailed projects and blast through a couple of quick one-day projects. Gets me back to where I love cutting again, anyway. 1. Edgar Allen Poe (with raven) 2. BoogeyMan (from "Nightmare Before Christmas") 3. really cool grin I found on Google Images 4. Ash, with chainsaw-hand, from "Evil Dead" movies 5. Alfred Hitchcock 6. H.P. Lovecraft, 1920s-1940s horror author, and the guy who came up with the "Cthulu" series of "elder monsters". An inspiration for Stephen King and other modern horror authors.

    Heart Trivet

The pattern is by Sue Mey. I used 1/2" Eastern Red Cedar. It cut smooth, but I found it very fragile. It cracked in two places, so I had to glue. We will use it as a wall hanging rather than a trivet. I cut it on the Pegas Scroll Saw using Pegas #3 MGT blades. Comments welcome.

    Chat Room

Holy cow, someone was digging in the archives! This thread is 11 years old! We haven't had a chat room in a few years. Chat rooms are incredibly resource heavy and was taxing the server too much. I might be able to find a different solution. Maybe using Discord or something. I'll poke around a bit and see what I can find.

  11. Well, if you are cooped up with little kids you are probably looking for things for them to do. Here's a little project I came up with that you might enjoy cutting on your scroll saw for your kids or grand kids. It's easy, it's fun, and it's a bit educational for the young ones. I call it Floating Bears. It's sort of a puzzle board. The child must be able to fit all of the bears in their appropriate slots (without stomping on them to make them fit.). Each bear is a bit different, so the board offers a challenge. To make it interesting you might want to time the contest and make it a game. The bears can be left with their white pattern paper so that the kids can color them, name them, or draw on them. I cut mine from MDF, but you could also use birch plywood. I've even made a short video to see how this thing is cut out on the scroll saw and put together. You can view the video here on YouTube. Time to have some fun. Free Pattern

  14. Some things I've done while at home. The first one is a kazoo to serenade the LOML . Got the idea from an article at the Instructible web site. The second is a phone/tablet stand I made for her also. The last one is a phone stand I made for myself. It is a Steve Good pattern, and I will be carrying it in my wallet. The cat stand is 1/4" BB and the other two are made out of 1/8" BB plywood. The cat stand is painted black and the other two have a walnut oil finish. Tom.l

    Chat Room

The subject of a chat room came up in another thread. As of now, we currently don't have one. But, if there's enough interest, I could certainly add one. We'd have to figure out the logistics of it, but right now I just wanted to gauge the interest. Waddya think? You guys want a chat room? I've added a quick poll, go ahead and cast your vote. Any thoughts or feedback are also welcome.

  16. This is a continuation of my thread on the general scroll saw forum. Finished up the pattern. Still haven't framed or applied a general finish. It was interesting using spirals. For the type of pattern, don't think I would ever use a straight blade no matter what the size. Throughout, the spirals would bend on me at the clamping area, thus weakening the blade and slowing down the process from going from drill hole to drill hole for cutting. Don't know if it's just my particular saw (Delta) or I'm just over tightening the thumbscrew too much. I don't fear spirals anymore and will attempt a pattern that requires following the lines rather than cut out the blackened area.

    Chat Room

On the old SSW magazine board, we used to have a Monday night chat. Even though it was the middle of the night, we would get some European visitors and the folks in Australia and New Zeland would chime in after their breakfasts. Monday was general chat, but I think the intarsia folks tried one on another night.

  18. Just finished up a few puzzle cuts: Pegus #3 MG blade, cut from Poplar, stained and coated with shellac. Also the Mermaid and the Pegasus bases are the first ones we've painted/dyed. A few more to finish coming soon Thanks as always in advance for reading

  19. Nice cuttings Paul. Finally started practice with the straight blades, having a heck of a time just to any years using only spirals. Keep wanting to not turn the wood and just cut sideways. Hard on blades lol

  21. I recently purchased two magnetic sewing machine lights to use on my scroll saw. I have been quite pleased with them. Bright white light, and they don't move. I highly recommend these. They come with steel disks that you can stick on to any smooth surface so the magnet mount will work even on aluminum, plastic, or glass or another smooth surface. These cost me $12 US each. Well worth the money. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07N1MK51J/

    Introduction

Hello everyone, My name is Roman. I'm from Belarus, lived in India as a missionary for 14 years, and now for the last 6 years here in Vancouver, WA. I've start scrolling about 10 years back and purchased my first Dewalt scroll saw on Amazon and it's arrived to India safe. have to use power converter etc. Start scrolling every pattern that came my way. and did few pieces of intarsia as well. can't find old pictures, hopefully will find it one day and will share with you. I totally love scrolling. have a gap about 5 years and last month I've got a new Dewalt scroll saw, so, finally I'm getting back to my hobby. It's good to be here with you all May God Bless You!!!

I like the idea. We used to have one and it was set up for a specific day and time (and time zone). There also used to be a chat tab that notified if anyone was in the room waiting. For me I think Sunday evening would work best.

  30. The rings took me about 20 minutes on the inside and 20 on the outside. I kinda got into a repetition of a swing of the wood. As long as you don't get in a big hurry it isn't bad. The hardest for me was the veining in the eagle wings and the Navy one was the hardest one the three.

  32. Absolutely beautiful Paul ! I would love to do those...an ARMY for me and others to sell, but I get intimated by the outside ring. Yours looks so prefect and symmetrical, I think mine would have bumps and oblong shapes...lol. With cuts on both sides needing to perfectly matchup, I would think any "oops" would really stand out. How long do the rings take to cut? What's your secrets to cutting it? I have a lot of military cuttings I want to do when we get home. One is a Charles Hand pattern of an ARMY jeep just like the one I had in Germany. It's one of those 350 hole monsters. Again, really, really nice Paul!

    SSV's Political Platform

I'd also like to followup....dealing with political posts, either explicit or subtle jabs, is my LEAST favorite chore in running SSV. If anything, please make my life a little easier and refrain from politics. It will really help my stress levels.

  47. OK - First - I didn't color the wood. The wood is from some left over strips of SpectraPly blocks, that I had used on another project. SpectraPly comes from Cousineau Wood Products -- https://www.cwp-usa.com/collections/spectraply-blanks The process is called Bowl-from-a-Board. I made the board from the SpectraPly strips, then used my scroll saw to cut the rings out of it. The rings were about 5/8" thick and I cut at a 45 degree angle. When I was done shaping the bowl, the wall of the bowl was about 3/8" at the base - tapering out to 1/8" at the lip. The base and lip are made of maple. The lip ring was made using segmented ring methods. If you are patient, and have the right sanders, you can shape the bowl with just the sanders. I cheated and used my lathe to spin the bowl while I worked. See Carole Rothman's youtubes and articles on how to cut bowls with a scroll saw and shape them with sanders. Here is the only side picture I have. The bowl sold so I can't take any more.

I like the idea. I like to bounce ideas off of folks live when I have a project coming up, it tends to help with my creative process. I also like joking around and getting to know folks as well.
