Like many others I had time in the shop today and cut this H. Byler design for my 82 years young dad who still rides when the weather is nice. Cut from poplar it took me several hours and about the time I finished the wheel detail it occurred to me it would have MUCH. Easier if I had spiral blades. Cut with MGT #1 and #3.

  3. I made a bunch of these three years ago from various pieces of wood I had laying around. The body on many of them was right at the maximum I could cut on my scroll saw. I ruined quite a few before I got good enough at cutting thick hardwood, and I got my finger mashed a couple of times before I learned to keep them out from under the scroll saw arm. This one is my favorite. After cutting these I discovered that cutting toys form 2x Southern Yellow Pine wasn't near as challenging

  4. This didnt look too overwhelming when I got the pattern, but it turned out a lot harder than it looks. Nonetheless, it is the first thing I have cut that I intend to keep for myself. It's going out on the front porch..... Pattern available at scrolleronline.

  7. I saw a post about Teddy Bear walks and all of a sudden in our neighbourhood I started to see bears in window. I decided I need a bear too and so I made one in wood. This is a Steve Good design for the a bearbox that I enlarged to an 8 1/2 by 11 sheet. Started yesterday morning and had ready for last night.

    Rainy weekend

Was a rainy weekend and nowhere to go with this shutdown, so spent an afternoon on the saw.

  9. I finished one order and was hesitating on the next so I tried something else that scares me but is my own so I can screw it up without a problem. These are 13 hours into it -- unfortunately I have to start the next one so am shelving this for now -- maybe (or I could just be insane for trying this but it's working) 3/8 Baltic with a #1 modified geometry on a Pegas

  10. Since Easter is coming and most of us are trapped in our social distancing environments, I thought it might be fun to experiment with a bunny pencil topper. I designed the head so that it can be compound cut on the scroll saw. I did mine on a 1.5 x 1.5 x 3" block cut from a 2 x 4. This soft pine is easy to cut using a #4 skip tooth blade. After you cut your block, x out a center on the end and drill a 5/16" hole about an inch into the block on the end. This will be the hole in the head for the pencil. Now you can do a plain ol' compound cut. If you are new to compound cutting check out my Spinner video on YouTube Free Pattern

  12. Today I finish a project. After thinking I am done, I thought of another branch of the service that was represented in my family. I remembered my brother-in-law was in the Air Force. So I may do one for him. I already showed the one for me USMC. My older brother received a draft notice just as I was finishing my enlistment in the Marines, so he went and joined the Army and my son, since he was around 12 years old had the goal of flying fighter jets. He never varied from that goal.. and did just that. Retired as an F-18 Superhornet, and Navy Combat pilot. He will never understand how proud I am of him for his accomplishments. I made these and will get them sent to them after this virus war is over..... Mine: My Brother"s: My Son's:

  16. (severed heads not included) Someone bought the skull I'd made and displayed at work last November, so I figured I should probably get started on a replacement....before October rolled around. I couldn't decide on any one pattern, so I settled on six. Most were really quick cuts, none were incredibly difficult (Ash's chainsaw blade will teach one how to cut corners, if nothing else!), and I blew through all six this weekend. They're currently stained, and I've got frames notched and ready to cut to size. They're all 3/16" ply, scraps from other projects, no idea if they're BB or just a generic Lowes ply. Whatever they are.....its always good to take a step back from the long, intricate, detailed projects and blast through a couple of quick one-day projects. Gets me back to where I love cutting again, anyway. 1. Edgar Allen Poe (with raven) 2. BoogeyMan (from "Nightmare Before Christmas") 3. really cool grin I found on Google Images 4. Ash, with chainsaw-hand, from "Evil Dead" movies 5. Alfred Hitchcock 6. H.P. Lovecraft, 1920s-1940s horror author, and the guy who came up with the "Cthulu" series of "elder monsters". An inspiration for Stephen King and other modern horror authors.

  17. Here is my latest scroll saw wood art piece. Street Musicians in New Orleans(?). 11" x 14" This one took a LONG time to cut. From a painting by John Carroll Doyle called "Maintaining The Soul".

  18. I recently purchased two magnetic sewing machine lights to use on my scroll saw. I have been quite pleased with them. Bright white light, and they don't move. I highly recommend these. They come with steel disks that you can stick on to any smooth surface so the magnet mount will work even on aluminum, plastic, or glass or another smooth surface. These cost me $12 US each. Well worth the money. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07N1MK51J/

    Blade Question

Starting using mine in 08. In 2014 it seemed to be getting harder to cut. Noticed I had the blade in upside down. Turned it over and it is still going like new. Larry

  23. Some things I've done while at home. The first one is a kazoo to serenade the LOML . Got the idea from an article at the Instructible web site. The second is a phone/tablet stand I made for her also. The last one is a phone stand I made for myself. It is a Steve Good pattern, and I will be carrying it in my wallet. The cat stand is 1/4" BB and the other two are made out of 1/8" BB plywood. The cat stand is painted black and the other two have a walnut oil finish. Tom.l

  24. If you mean the Loc-line, about the only thing I know of is remove the warn out link(s). You can separate the links and remove a bad one then put the "hose" back together. If the hose gets too short you can buy new. I heat mine to separate links, but don't get them too hot.

  25. I tried an experiment with a Tropical orange juice bottle. Take the cap off and cut a hole in the bottom to match the outlet of the vac. The bottom of the bottle has a concave that matches the convex of the vac. Hot glue that to the vac. It will cut the noise more than half and not bother the air flow. You'll be amazed how quiet it will be.

  26. Very nice. I can't imagine cutting that. You did a great job!

  29. This is a continuation of my thread on the general scroll saw forum. Finished up the pattern. Still haven't framed or applied a general finish. It was interesting using spirals. For the type of pattern, don't think I would ever use a straight blade no matter what the size. Throughout, the spirals would bend on me at the clamping area, thus weakening the blade and slowing down the process from going from drill hole to drill hole for cutting. Don't know if it's just my particular saw (Delta) or I'm just over tightening the thumbscrew too much. I don't fear spirals anymore and will attempt a pattern that requires following the lines rather than cut out the blackened area.

  31. Have not cut too much lately. Rather chilly and don't care to heat the shop and been busy with a dust collector. Today my wife moved her snow shovels out of the way so I could get out my table saw. I can't do everything! Anyway I cut up a little piece of 1/2" plywood to saw. I seldom cut plywood except for BB but I had forgotten how nicely it cut. Even construction plywood can have some interesting grain. I cut this with a #3 Pmg blade. No finish. That will happen during warm weather outside.

  34. Howdy folks! I'm Steve. I recently became a member and I would like to introduce myself. I've been looking around on the fourm for awhile and liked what I've found so much that I wanted to join up. I live in Texas, just outside Waco. I call my woodshop Cross Timbers Wood Crafts. I've been a woodworker for a long time but I didn't start scrolling until 2016. I've still got a long way to go before I can call myself an accomplished scroller, but I'm learing as I go. I wish I'd found this fourm back in 2016. My first scroll saw was an old Delta. It was difficult to change blades and vibrated so bad that I didn't want to use it. So I bought a DeWalt 788 (which I promptly renamed Lemon 788). It had problems right out of the box. There was always something wrong with it. I know there's many who like the 788, I guess I just got a bad one. Now I have a Seyco ST-21, and I must say that my cutting has improved with the Seyco. I just need more time on it. Well, now that you know a little about me, I'm looking forward to getting to know y'all and be part of the group.

    Dust Collection Again

Awesome idea. I'm tackling the dust issue in my shop these days and as my scroll saw is a ways from the other power tools I was trying to figure out how to handle the dust collection. With your post problem solved, thanks!!! Gotta love this site !! Chris

  39. Ray, I've got the Metro vac also, and really like it. Just a little loud, but not as bad as a shop vac. I also have a fein vacuum, and may try to get that hooked up later. Tom

  40. That's what I'm goimg to do too. I bought the little Metro Vac and the cyclone that Les mentioned. I'm going to tuck the whole thing up under my saw so it will be totally self-contained.
