    Rothenburg

Many years ago my wife and I visited Rothenburg ob der Tauber. It is one of the most scenic and historic walled cities in Germany. The view is of the Rotor Tor (gate) and we had the opportunity to walk around the top of whole wall. It's a magical place full of timber frame houses and interesting shops. It' a project I had thought about doing for a long time. I started the design 12/17 and didn't start the cutting until 3/7. I gave myself some time to work on it and had to walk away a few times. There were a lot of holes! Things were kind of fragile too. Keeping pieces in place helped retain the strength until I was finished. Love Blue Tape!! I finished it today. Dimension is 17 x 12 on BBPW. Finish is Semi-gloss lacquer and I made a custom frame to fit. I must say that it was one of my most challenging scroll saw projects but I'm glad I did it.

    An Attempt I Made

Recently @RabidAlien posted the pattern of the Jazz Trumpeter. One I wanted to try so I did. Not posting this because I am happy with it but more to give advice to anyone else that cuts it. As you can see with mine, it does not show up well. The reason is I did not enlarge the pattern enough, this is approximately 10" x 7.5" x 1/4". When I do it again (out of wood right now), I will increase the size by at least 50% more. That way the lines will be thick enough to let the white show through, and I will cut it in 1/8" pieces (stacked), that will also let the white show up more. It is a fun cut and not real difficult. There are some very fragile area and making it bigger will also strengthen them some. I really enjoyed playing around with it, not sorry I tried and it will be on my do over list. Is making a trip to a wood store essential???!! Feels like it to me.. Just thought of another option, reverse it, doesn't look too bad.

  8. BadBob recently posted about a sewing machine light that he bought on Amazon. Based on his recommendation, I purchased one and it works well and is bright. A couple of days after getting the first light, I ordered a similar one that was shown on the same Amazon page. Below is a picture showing both of the lights. The initial one was 12" and the second one was 24". The longer one is very nice and stays in place when you position it. It also has 2 magnets as opposed to the one on the 12" version. In both cases the magnets are pretty strong and keep the lights in place. The other difference is brightness with the 12" one being quite a bit brighter. The 24" one is on the top in the picture below. The 12" version has an on/off switch and one brightness while the 24" one has three brightness settings and the on/off/brightness is a touch control and not a regular switch. I bought two of the 24" lights at $14.99, one for me and one for the wife. It seems that Amazon is out of the 24" one right now. The shorter version is $11.99. Both lights are pretty nice for the price and I will be using mine in the shop on the drill press or band saw.

  9. Tryed to do some scrolling and yesterday's clean up messed me up again. I don,t know where I put things. Anyway I had to relax and cut Baggetta,s pattern he showed. There were 3 but just like always as soon as I finish them here come the vultures so one disappeared. Thank you Baggetta for your work!!!

  11. I'm not really pleased with this but, I absolutely had to cut something and this could be done in one day. I'm a sucker for Native American patterns and this is supposed to represent a knife with a bone blade.. Pattern by Tim Rogers. My cutting is about 17" x 14 1/2". Woodburned wolf paws. Since I tapered the knife blade to make it look like a real knife, the knife then had to be raised to make it look like it was laying on top of the sheath properly. Thanks for looking and God Bless! 13. Nice! Yeah, pattern might need to be enlarged. I just left it the size I downloaded it, since it seemed large enough on my screen. 150% or even 200% would work, or else use really thin wood. I was thinking it might also look good with a light behind it...

  17. So this is where we are. Having to avoid each other because of Covid-19. Well, we all have to try to be safe so I guess for a while we'll have to keep our distance with maybe an elbow bump once in a while. Here's a sign as a reminder. I cut mine from oak plywood and mounted it on the off cut for a base. I can only wonder if someone generations from now happens upon this message what he/she will think. Free Pattern

  20. Ya, I did think of a lighted shadow box or something similar. Not going to put that much effort into this attempt, but I think it would work and be kinda neat. Kris, you did a much better job of of it than I did.

  23. I use CA glue quite a bit - have grown to use smaller bottles about the same size that has been pictured above a couple times - what's that old Brylcreem commercial? - a little dab will do you? - really don't have major problems with the tip clogging that aren't easily cleaned up - sometimes I do have to break dried build-up around the end of the tip with a pair of plyers - I also keep a bottle of solvent and also a spritzer of accelerant - don't use them often but when you want them they are handy to have. One key thing to remember about CA glue is that although it works quickly it is also brittle when its dry - so on almost all of my larger 3D woodwork projects that might take a bit of abuse I have grown to use both CA and yellow glue in alternate dabs. Should also ad that if you have a delicate piece where you might need to be careful about the amounts applied then put a larger dab on a scrap piece of wood or cardboard and use the end of a discarded scrollsaw blade to apply - much easier to put on a consistently small amount for delicate pieces. 29. Not yet. I wanted to finish up what I'm working on first. I am going to have to take my saw apart to do what I want to do so I've put it off. I have everything I need to do it and have hooked it up to try it. It works great as Les stated. I'm excited at the prospect of having two Excalibur saws on mobile stands that will each have their own self-contained dust control systems. The tiny little cyclone really does work and that MicroVac is very strong for its size. As stated, it's a bit noisy and that's why I configured that "muffler" for it.

  31. I have four different wood glues in my shop but not CA glue and never have. What in particular are you using the CA glue for?

  32. I squeeze the bottle several time to "suck" the glue out of the nozzle, before I put the lid on. In the old days I never bothered with a lid. But a lid is safer because it you tip the bottle over... I have heard it might pour out... Is you squeeze the bottle DO NOT look down the nozzle as you squeeze.... Takes forever to get you eye open again if you do.... so I am told.

  33. There is a neat metal container on Amazon. I bought the small one but I wish I had bought the big one. Mine will work but it doesn't allow for the lid/cyclone to tilt out completely. My design flaw. Didn't plan ahead.

  34. I recently purchased a miniature dust collector. Octoolguy aka Ray made me aware of it. We both ordered one. The attached photo shows it in a plastic form. The ones we got were cast aluminum which are no longer available. I forget the measurements but the unit is like seven inches tall. I placed it in an Oggi container also available from Amazon. The thing is there are no complicated connections. The hoses are from my cpap machine. The are replaces every so often. They are also available from Amazon for $5.99 for a ten foot hose. The two orifices on the DC are one inch which is exactly the same size as the hose end. The slips in easily and firmly. The PVC fittings are just one inch pipe and fittings. It is sort of plug 'n play. The vacuum source is a very noisy Oreck hand vacuum and the dust collection is spectacular. Both on top and bottom. The photo next to the last is an old photo and shows one side capped which is no longer the case.

  49. I like the idea of the hose from a cpap machine. I have wanted to try to get an upper hose on my new dust collection system. Of course with the lock down, I don't think I need to run to the hardware store to get a "y" connector hose. It can wait until the fall.
