  1. I've had quite a bit of time in the shop lately and made up some Intarsia ornaments. The green color was dyed. I made 3 of each pictured, and have to make some more.

    Basket - C01

The pattern is by Alex Fox. I enlarged the pattern to fit a 10" x 10" piece of 1/4" Mahogany. Since I cut this at home, I cut it on the EX21 using FD UR #1 blades. The finish is three coats of spray Polyurethane Clear Gloss. I normally do not use gloss, but it fits this project. Comments welcome.

    Nothin but scrap

I use a lot of 1/2" baltic birch for backers and end up with a lot of scrap that I throw away which drives me crazy. Decided to do something different.

    Vigilance

The pattern is by Charles Dearing. Some time ago, I asked "Brown or Black" for the backing. Brown was the overwhelming choice. This was cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using Pegas #0 Spiral blades. The wood is 1/4" Baltic Birch plywood and backed with a dark brown mat board. Of course framed at ArtCrafters. Comments welcome.

  5. ok I made all of my kids some christmass presents according to what they are interested in. When I asked my youngest daughter what she would like she said she wanted a D & D screen to put on the table to sort of hide her books and notes and such... my ex husband and I started playing D&D back in the late 70s when it first came out so of course my kids learned to play to. now when they were younger I would make up D & D type games to go with there history lessons lol they had to really research the person they were playing and stick to the personaly of that person during the game.... it made the learning fun and entertaining lol it wasn't until they were grown that they relized what I was doing lol then they accused me of being sneaky!! lol can you immanage little old me being sneaky? lol any way my Heather now runs a D & D game of her own with her husband and there friends.... and as dungen master she wanted a screen... now I don't know where you could be buy such a thing and not having found any patterns on line for them I just sort of had to make my own patterns..... so what I did was grab 2 coloring book pictures that fit the D &D theam and another from a wood magazine I had and transferred the pictures to wood... then I took my trusty little dermal tool and bits... and sort of line carved and etched the pictures on to the wood... after those were finished I put a frame around each picture then put hinges on them so they would stand and be a screen.... then I wood burned the name of all Heathers direct relitives and all the pets name we ve had over the years in the bricks of the castle wall in the center frame. im not to sure how well the pictures came out bu t here they are::::this is the center piece... its a dragon with wings sort of sitting in the door way of a castle... you can't really see it but those black little lines or squiggles... that s where i wood burned all the names in the bricks ... sometimes i make things a litte more complex then just simple projects lol everyone one whos seen it has asked if i could do another screen maybe with different picture and how much would i charge to make them..... so far iv been able to sort of stear them to other things.... because of course i could make others but i have no idea how much to charge for such a thing!! lol i told my kids if they ever want to get a present for one of there friends to let me know and then i ll see what i can come up with for them... only thing is they wont be able to pick out the pictures they want done. lol i had thought about painting the pictures once they were done, but everyone told me NO !! lol to just leave it as it was so thats what i did. the only real problem i had with making this is that the 3 pannals wont fold down flat for carrying when going to some eles house or to be put away so i put little hook type things on the tops of the pictures so the screen can be hung on a wall and then taken down during game time. like i said i dont really know what kind of wood working you would call this but Heather liked it as did a lot of her frieds and thats all that really mattered to me. lol

    Key Holder

Been asked to make a key holder for the wife. Still have to put on the hooks, but first time using Canary wood. Absolutely love it! Smells nice cutting, response well. Cut with a Flying Dutchman #1 skip tooth. Used Team oil to make it pop. Hope the SSV nation likes this as much as I have loved making it and staring at it. P.S. I think I figured out my problem with the photos going sideways. iPhone 8 has to be turned sideways.

    Here is one i did

I decided to try another intarsia project. This one I have made 3 other times and I have sort of left my intarsia projects way behind me and concentrated on scrolling. I guess, as I age, I only seem to get more and more out of touch with my abilities. This is a pattern I purchased from JGR several years ago. I just needed something to do in the shop and I asked my wife if she would like one of these and she said she would. I used several kinds of wood on the but I have to admit that I stained the man's hair but the rest is natural. Dick heppnerguy

    HAPPY EASTER

I don't know where this should go, so mods, please remove it if it doesn't belong here. I posted this on the other forums, but wanted to share it here. Sorry if this offends anyone, actually I don't really care if this offends anyone. I would like to extend Easter wishes to all my Christian Friends and the very best Passover feast to all my Jewish brethren. In light of what the world is handing us at the present time, it wouldn't hurt to worship and ask for help from our creator. BE WELL and BE SAFE to all.

  15. Back to basic bartering. Give them a gold bar and its useless in these times. A goat supplies milk, cheese, and if really needed meat. Who needs plywood? Can't eat it, Can't wash your hands with it, and I'm not sure a cut square of it will wipe behind. RJF

  16. And to boot, who the heck would want a goat? Can’t pay the bills with a goat. I suppose if the wood dealer is in the country, they might want a goat, but most wood dealers are in the city! They don’t want a goat! So really, it’s just a very dumb idea!

  18. I made an owl, from a photo I purchased. Now that it's hanging on my wall, I notice more and more mistakes I made. Smh at myself. @meflick my daughter is also sewing masks - so far she has donated more than 100 to charitable organizations who provide food to school children and to medical personnel.

  20. ok heres a few more for you to look at. im real into recycleing so this first one is a Dotson bank I made from a book holder pattern and an empty penut butter bottle. then theres the cat puzzle I made for some kind of press board that was at one time a microwave oven stand. I painted the back of it black and the front is just the finish that was on it when it was a microwave oven shelf.lol then theres the airplain lamp. some one asked me to make a airplain lamp for there son and that's what I came up with the next one is just a picture of some chunkys I make out of scrap wood. I usuly just give those away lol but id rather do that then toss out good wood!! now spike on the other hand just dosnt understand why I cant throw anything away!! lol the last one is an easter decortion… I got the pattern out of an easter coloring book my youngest got when she was 7. lol she an art teacher now lol so theres some easy projects I like to throw together every now and then. lol most of the things I make are easy things but at least it keeps me off the streets!!! lol

    Lumber

i worked in a pallet mill right out of high school-10 years ago( its my lie ill tell it like i want! ). i saw some gorgeous lumber go into pallet stock. some beautiful QS red and white oak and curly/flame/figured maple. i didnt know about curly/flame/figured maple at the time and thought it was junk wood. the mill purchased the logs in large quantities. most were one step away from firewood but there would still be some real nice logs from time to time.

    Best butterfly project

I have already made several butterfly scroll saw patterns, but I always trying to make next pattern better than previous. I think it is the best butterfly scroll saw pattern. What variant do you like more, with background or without? Video of making project Butterfly pattern

  27. Candle Cage Pattern Project Here's a nice little project you can make from scrap wood you have lying around. It makes a nice gift. Add a battery candle and you have the soft candle light reflecting off the wood. You can attach a thread of wire to the top so you can hang it, make a wooden base for it, or just place it on a table and watch the flickering. If you do decidee to make this only use the battery candles. DO NOT USE A REAL CANDLE. This is wood and it could be very dangerous. I've also put the pattern in to make a round candle cage. Haven't done it, but you might want to give it a try. This is an easy project; took me about 20 minutes to cut and assemble. I put together an assembly video to show you how this thing goes together. It is available on my YouTube channel. Free pattern on my Free Pattern Page

    Nothin but scrap

Great project Dave...good idea for 1/2 inch for backer. I use 3/8th inch screws on the hangers and sometimes I have to lower the hanger to get a place where it hits both backer and top.half inch is a good answer.

  42. These are the projects I've worked on, and am working on, during this unfathomable period of time. The 3D-compound project was made with Mendocino redwood slats glued together; the bookends are not completed as they need to be glued and stained; the "Daddy's Hand" is for my son who's newborn boy spent the first two months of his life in the hospital; and the rocking reindeer is half inch baltic birch plywood with three different finishes (rubbed grey paint, medium walnut Danish Oil, and mahogany stain).

  43. I think they both look nice but the one with out the baker is nicer if your not going to paint or stain it.....if you painted the baker or put a picture of some flowers on the backer I think it would really look nice that way. or use a different color wood or stain on the backer like make the baker darker so it would bring out the butterfly and flowers better...

  44. Well, I haven't really completed any scroll saw projects yet. I've been working a little bit out there, but not a lot. First, I had both of my eyes lenses replaced in the couple weeks just before the pandemic shut everything down (think same surgery as for cataracts, but without the cataracts). Was having my one week checkup on my second eye about the time they started slowly shutting many things down. As a result, I have been out of the shop letting my eyes heal and staying away from saw dust. I have recently been out there for a little bit, wearing eye protection and face mask. Maybe I will have something to share wood related soon. I also have had my adult daughter home from grad school (physical therapy) for the past 3+ weeks. She was "passing through" on her way to a 10 week clinical rotation when she got word that it was being postponed "indefinitely". It was suppose to go until about the end of May, and so far its looking like she (and all of her classmates) will not get this one in right now. We are praying that she can start her next one in June on time. As a result, she has elected to stay here with us for now. I enjoy having her, she likes to cook! Anyway - my husband is in healthcare - not frontline, front and center like in the ER but still out there everyday so I made him and us and some extended family members face masks once the CDC recommended that we all wear them when we go out. The camouflage ones were for him - I thought they were fitting in that we are fighting a battle in healthcare right now! I used a couple of different patterns. I said its funny, i can saw a much straighter line on a scroll saw then I can sew one on a sewing machine. My mother was the seamstress, she sewed us barbie clothes, clothes for us when we were young, older, and for our children. She made baby blankets for ours and anyone else she knew expecting (including every baby in her church.) We lost her to Alzheimer's 4 years ago this week. I said she is either up there laughing at me, or shaking her head in despair at my sewing skills. She would have had 100's made in the time it took me to make 10! I used two different patterns. The second photo shows the ones that "fit" your face a little more then the first ones. The first ones are more like surgical masks that are not as form fitting to your face. Here is the links to where I found the patterns. This is link to the first one: https://www.joann.com/how-to-make-a-face-mask/042188731P321.html and this is the second one: https://www.craftpassion.com/face-mask-sewing-pattern/#face-mask-video

  48. Since four of my shows have been canceled I have spent some time doing some things that I have wanted to do in a long time but have put off. I have a mini split heat pump in my shop for heating and cooling. It wasn't designed for a super dusty environment like my shop. It has a filter in it but not adequate. When in use I had to blow it out every other day with my air compressor. Came up with this idea. The box hangs on a cleat for easy removal. I used foam around the bottom to seal it up. Time will tell how it works. I also built this lumber rack on wheel which I desperately needed.

  49. I have started to attempt things that I have not tried before and am unsure of. The first on my list is to master the use of epoxy with scroll sawn objects. I started this a couple of weeks ago and am documenting my successes and failures in the thread: In the meantime, here is a photo of my latest experiment which is currently underway: When (not if) I finally succeed, I will insert a photo of that project here: xxxxxxx
