    Columbo

Something different for a change. My daughter loves Columbo so I thought that I would cut it for her for when I eventually get to see her again in person. Pattern is by Dennis O'Donnell via FaceBook. 2.5mm Bamboo on a store bought frame. Marg

  4. I showed the little puppy pattern to my wife. It is in the latest Scroll Saw magazine and she said she thought it was really cute, so I had to give it a try for her. She was pleased with it and loves her little dog and most animals too. So if she is happy, so am I Next is the Steve Good plaque. I posted it and had a couple of requests for them and so I now have them done and ready to send out. Dick heppnerguy

    DeWalt Arm Lifter

I normally don’t write reviews for items, however; I made a quarantine buy. Ordered it through Papa’s workshop and it arrived today. Instructions were so easy, a caveman could do it. Finally sat down to try it rather than a block of wood and all I can say is why didn’t I do this sooner. Makes scrolling even easier. Only reason I am writing this is in case someone was on the fence like I was. Best 45 dollars I have spent all lock down!

I have a Craftsman from the 60s. Motor in the back like yours. It is a great drill press. I have drilled with a #68 bit. The chucks are probably the same in these old drill presses. The Craftsman that I have was made by Emerson.

  11. Yeah, I've decided to bite the bullet and order one myself. If it wasn't for the lock down, I'd just make my own. I don't mind the cost of the lifter, it's $8.00 shipping for a $32.00 item that annoys me. I guess Amazon Prime has spoiled me.

CharleyL posted how he developed a precision drill press table. This started my search for another bench top drill press. I have a floor drill and a bench drill press but it is in my basement shop which does me no good in the scroll shop. I use the Dremel plunge router to poke holes in my patterns but it does wobble a bit and is cumbersome to change drill bits. I had looked at several from Ryobi to Harbor Freight. Last night i spotted an Atlas bench top drill press. Circa late 40's to 50's. This is a fantastic piece of iron. Very heavy with a chuck that will grip a #70 drill bit accurately. It had been posted for only a couple hours on Facebook marketplace. Price was $75. I committed to buy it sight unseen. Picked it up this afternoon. Should say my wife and I managed to get into her SUV. Getting home a neighbor carried it into my shop. A new belt, a little rust remover and a few drops of oil and it's good to go. CharleyL's lazer information will get the lazer ordered and installed.

I have one just like it and the book as well. I loaned mine to my brother in law because I didn't need it as much as I needed the space. Mine cost me $50 15 years ago. Nice find and great job on bringing it back to life.

  16. My hearing is bad enough now that I can't listen to much of anything without some sort of headphone/amplification. We listen to TV using two sets of TV Ears. We can each control our own volume. By the time I put on my dust mask, my glasses, my hat and my over-the-ears hearing aids, there is not much room left for any other stuff. My one gripe about my dust mask/respirator is that nobody has ever incorporated a straw/tube for drinking through. In order to sip coffee or water or my favorite beverage, I have to go through the whole riggamorole of taking everything off and putting it back on. PITA!

  17. Something for the motor heads in the group. Admin If the topic is deemed inappropriate feel free to delete it. Between making saw dust I have been fulfilling another bucket list item. My workshop is full of the tools that I wanted and needed. So the profits from my sales had nowhere to go but burn out the bottom of my pockets. After 49 years of owning my Brit sorts car (TVR) It was time to get the motor tweaked. Completely rebuilt and properly tuned on a Dyno. All I need to do is bolt it back in after I clean up the engine bay and chassis. Went from about 90 HP to 148 HP in a 1700 pound car, should be fun. It is a 4 cylinder Ford 1.6 Liter now 1.7 Liter. The motor is hanging in my garage while I wait for the weather to warm up a bit so I can work on it outside, some wiring to do and my garage is too narrow for me to work around the car. The carburetors had been in a box in my basement for at least 30+ years.

  19. I saw this pattern by @Fish when I first joined SSV and have been wanting to cut it. I like smaller portraits so I just did from the elbows up because things were too small with his whole body in a small piece of wood. It's cut in 5/8" quarter sawn red oak, and is 7 3/4" X 7 3/4". I saw that you did another pattern with his left ear Dan but I preferred this one since it looks so much like the original picture. I used black canvas material for the backer. Thanks for a great pattern Dan.

  20. Had a good time cutting this portrait of Doc Adams from Gunsmoke. Pattern by @lawson56. 1/2" Red oak. About 5" X 7". When I'm cutting a portrait I usually take a picture of the back side after cutting the eyes, nose and mouth and post it on Facebook to see if anyone can guess who it is. Usually only have maybe one correct guess. Most everybody got this one right. Doc has some recognizable eyes.

I wish they all would design them to be spring loaded like the Hawk and ( I think ) Hegner.. So much nicer not to even have to take the time to raise it up.. once blade is unhooked the arm goes up on it's own and out of the way.. Nice when a blade breaks too.. as the upper arm doesn't keep running..

  22. I have a few higher end spray guns as I used to work the autobody business.. and spraying from the equipment seems like a very good idea IF.. you're able to set up and spray a lot of pieces at once.. Otherwise you'll spend about the same money every time you clean up the spray equipment.. Now.. you did mention water base.. and assuming you can do a good clean-up with just soap and water.. It may very well be worth the effort.. I know there are some folks on here that use spray equipment.. and have much success with it.. It doesn't work well for me as many of my items are "made to order" rather than a built up stock for in person shows.. so many times I'm only putting a finish on 1-2 pieces at a time.. the clean up time to clean the spray equipment would out weigh the cost of just using a spray can.. I don't know how hard it is to clean some of the cheaper spray guns but mine you have many pieces to take out and clean.. so you basically take the gun apart and clean up all the pieces etc.. I suggest a small spray gun rather than the larger ones.. maybe look at touch-up guns with smaller paint cup.. Years ago I bought a quart can of water based poly.. I never did open it up.. and I keep thinking I need to just do the spray gun thing.. a can of the stuff locally is about $8 ( I think 16 oz. can) and a quart is like $12.. so yeah.. If I got a small touch-up gun and could do several pieces at a time.. It's save me a lot of money.. and I probably will do this once I start running my CNC sign making business soon...

  25. I had the Jim Dandy on my Dewalt for several years. It was still on it when I sold it a few years ago. I presume it's still on the saw. Some time ago, a member of my scroll saw club came up with a home made design he offered to club members. I bought one at the time, thinking mine would eventually wear out. I sent it along with the Dewalt when I sold it. Once I had the lift installed and got used to it, it was like a footswitch, I would never want to be without it. I have an EX-21 now. The ability to have the upper arm stay raised is an absolute must for me.

  32. Or better yet, why no incorporate a similar item on their saws? I myself put the Jim Dandy arm lift on my Dewalt and it worked great. At only $25 it was a very good investment. Now, I have 2 Excaliburs so the subject is moot at my house.

Les, that's the sort of deal I have been waiting to come along. I used to have one just like that but it was a Craftsman. The part I loved best is the spindle lock. You can put that spindle anywhere you want it and lock it there. I miss that feature so much. I'll have to get more serious about finding another one. There is one near me but they are asking way too much for it.

  35. Not all of my projects have been scrolled, but I have gotten some of that done. Tree is a sweetgum, we got it planted right after the quarantine went into effect in our county. Planter-box was built yesterday, with my wife's help (and no blood was shed!), it'll go in the back yard where she can plant some herbs/veggies. The compound cut is for one of my daughter's favorite teachers, an Army vet who has really helped and encouraged her this year. Navy compound cut is up next, for myself.

  36. "Step back about 6 feet, please." Seems to be the general feeling today due to Covid 19. Who would have thought that we would be in such a situation. Here's a little sign that future generations can look back on as a reminder when asked "Do you remember what year that virus flipped the world upside down?" We won't soon forget 2020. 47. Wow Wow Wow! Everybody's been keeping busy, it looks like! Hope everyone is well; been a lifetime since I've been here (sorry to say) part of the reason being, ahem... (I forgot my password and sign-in and couldn't find them) lol Exciting news since my absence, I've gotten a new workshop/shed built; (new one is 16x24) this was built last year, and have been gradually been getting it completed. Last fall I had the electric installed, and over the last few months, the insulation and walls have started to go up, and Ken started to paint the walls today (with paint we had at the house) I was sent home Mar 23 and have been home since. Here's a few things Ken and I have done, starting with a Amazon knockoff of a curtain rod bracket, some Easter outdoor and indoor decorations, a giant Spring Tulip, my Christmas Show signs, ring dishes, tablet stands (Steve Good design) and an accent wall in our living room I've been wanting to do for at least three years. In the Christmas Show picture, I had some eye glass holders. They sold like crazy! As did the rabbit egg holders this spring. That pattern came from thingiverse.com, and I took it to a 2D pattern; cutting it to fit different sized eggs. The smallest being the Cadbury Egg holder. I need to work with it for next year, since I still have approximately 50 eggs to get rid of lol

  49. I have been working on a lantern. Posted under "another something new" so I won't post here. Also been cutting 22 , only 6 so far, of the 10 piece flower puzzle that Al Baggetta posted http://www.baggetta.com/pebooks/Free_CountUpToSpring/Count Up To Spring Flower Pattern.pdf These were going to be "Count down to Mother's Day" puzzles. My daughter is a teacher and I thought these would be great for her class to decorate and then give to their mom's. Covid got in the way. I also did this balloon as something to do that didn't require a great deal of thinking!!
