This is my first completed bowl (I'm working another but it still needs work - experimental idea). The wood is 3/4 Black Limba. It screamed "Take Me" when I saw it at the store so I did. I also did a serving tray from that same piece of wood. The bowl is 15 inches long by 12 wide -- The tray is another post earlier. Need much more practice definitely but I'm happy with it as a first -- Finished with Danish oil and spray oil Poly11 points

My Basket Weave
Karl S and 4 others reacted to Frank Pellow for a topic
Tammi201 drew my attention to the Steve Good pattern for this basket in the thread: that she posted yesterday. I immediately made my version of the basket using Figured Maple for the sides and Walnut for the top and bottom. As Tammi said in her thread this is surprisingly easy to make. The only difficult part, for me. was gluing everything together.5 points -

Small Picture Frames
namunolie and one other reacted to cowboyup3371 for a topic
I took another one of Steve Good's patterns but reduced the size to match what stock I had to make these picture frames. They will hold 3.5" x 5" photos instead of the 4"x6" he originally called for and are made from curly red oak. These five are for my two daughters, two of my great-nieces, and my cousin's granddaughter. Although I originally made these just because, my eldest will turn 22 tomorrow and so the one set up for landscape pictures is her birthday gift. The four dark ones have a black cherry stain with a lacquer finish while the light colored frame has just lacquer on it (that great-niece said she wanted a light colored object - still not knowing what). I cut this fun pattern by @lawson56 of The Monkeys for my shop wall today. Got in a rush to finish and nailed the backer to the front. Not my first time to do this. Thankfully the back side looked about as good as the front in this case. I loved watching these guys on Saturday mornings as a kid, so I'll enjoy seeing them on my wall. Even if it's a mirror image. 1/2" oak, about 6 1/2" X 9"2 points

I get an email from time to time from Nick Ferry, woodworker. This one came in a few days ago and I just got around to watching it. He is showing a new remote outlet for a vacuum that is air-controlled. It is WAY cool. Here is the link to it on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07HC83XDT/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&psc=1&linkCode=sl1&tag=nicfer00-20&linkId=c11ac331d53aaf4702b3f051abf3c6e2&language=en_US Here is the link to Nick Ferry's video that shows how it works. For $22 I think it's a winner.2 points

My lovely wife had a custom branding iron made for me with a secondary logo I use for my little woodworking hobby. My main logo has too much minute detail for the iron maker to recreate well. The iron works great to burn in my logo on some of my larger pieces. I am still playing around try to figure out the proper burn time and pressure but it will come. I came up with the idea of cutting out the burn for a wooden “business card” if you will to hand out at shows and fairs. Sort like the idea and the cost is minimal as I can use scrap. The finished product is 2 inch diameter a bit larger than a poker chip. Comments welcome.2 points

Dog and Bunny Piles
Birchbark and one other reacted to Sycamore67 for a topic
Iguanadon posted the Bear Pile pattern from Harvey Byler and it was really interesting. I cut that one and and the Bunny pile and sent them to my Grandkids. They really like them. And then, Don in Brooklin did something interesting in making a couple of the Bears in the Bear pile taller so they stood out. That was a very good idea and decided I needed to try it. I took some 3/4" Cherry and glued some 3/16" thick oak to the back of it. I cut both the Dog Pile and the Bunny Pile. After I cut a couple of pieces from each puzzle, I sent the remaining pieces through a drum sander and reduced the thickness of the rest of the pieces by about 1/8" and cut the rest of the pieces out. I then rough shaped the the pieces using a Dremel tool . After this I used strips of sandpaper to smooth out the rough cuts and bring out the details. I use regular sandpaper with packing tape on the back and cut to narrow strips. I also us cloth backed sandpaper. This is how the final puzzles look I make trays for the puzzles from a 1/2" Piece of Baltic Birch on top with a cut out and 1/4" Baltic Birch on the back. The trays make it easy for the Grandkids to put the puzzles away and not lose any pieces.2 points -
Saw a thread a couple years ago about these lifters but no way was I going to pay for that because I know better and can figure something out myself. lol I had my saw in the garage so I put it right under the open garage door and put a ring into the garage door. When it was open I just wrapped a long bungee cord around the arm of the saw and hooked it to that ring in the garage door. worked great. take that and your $50 lifter. Of course I forgot i was hooked up and got up and slammed the garage door closed and heard something smash into it really loud. uh oh. Opened the door and the saw was dangling there by the bungee wrapped around the upper arm. Lesson learned. Dont connect your saw to a giant swinging door.2 points

Hello friends, I hope you are in good health. This pandemic is affecting us all, we are isolated without being able to work normally. But it also gives us time to learn new things. I show you my last work done with dremel, now in wood. Thank you in advance for your comments. A greeting and a big hug for everyone.1 point -
Blades are a personal opinion and experience. I love Pegas but saying that you have to be happy with the blades you use. If FD blades work for you keep using them. You are in good company!1 point

Nicely done fret work. On top of that, it came off a new saw that you had to get to know. I think your connection with your new saw is taken care of and your new saw has become one of your new best friends. Dick heppnerguy1 point -
The Jim Dandy lift is the only one I would consider buying.. I had it before the others came out.. While the others do the job too and many people like them I suppose.. they are not of a design that I care for personally.. You could probably make one fairly cheap if you already have some of the stuff laying around.. but honestly one could spend a lot of time fussing with something and trips to the hardware to get things needed.. I feel it's really reasonable priced at $30 and no fuss installation.. Maybe just me because I live in the boonies and a special trip to the hardware would cost me a couple bucks in fuel.. yes even at today's low prices. LOL1 point

Here is a link to the Jim Dandy Lift for the DeWalt. It will likely fit the other saws of the same design. Once came on my type 1 when I bought it and it has served the purpose well. I did tighten the spring one position when I added the LED lights to both sides of the upper arm, but have done nothing else to it. The price is quite reasonable, but if I didn't get one with the saw, I probably would have made one similar to it. It is a very simple design. Two longer replacement screws, a spring, and an arm with a few carefully positioned holes. https://jimdandy.com/products/easy-lift-system-for-dewalt-scroll-saw-dw788 Charley1 point

I installed one on my garbage disposal. It's easy to install and works great. You plug it in to an outlet and plug in what you want to control, run the tubing and push button to desired location.1 point -
The advantage of the air switch is: if you are in a situation where saw dust keeps clogging the original switch, the air switch is less likely to clog. That being said, I prefer an rf remote switch and fully enclosing the original switch, just my preference. HF makes a three outlet remote switch system. Also. if you use a remote switch, turn the device off at the original switch when you leave the shop. I activated my DC for over a day straight accidentally (shop is separate from the house and I couldn't hear the DC running.)1 point

opinion on new bandsaws
OCtoolguy reacted to Woodmaster1 for a topic
Carter products web site. I only paid $79 for the stabilizer. It is a single bearing you put on the upper guide and you remove the bottom guide. It is for 1/4" or less blades. I use an 1/8" blade with no issues. If you get one make sure you get the model for your brand of bandsaw. They have replacement guide sets but for my needs the stabilizer all I need.1 point -

Easier for me and cheaper: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B074CRGFPZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Strong RF signal works through doors and walls without interfering with other electronics, operating from as far as 100 ft. In line of sight I just lay it nearby where I'm working and hit the button when I need the vac. Just sharing an alternate way, not knocking anyone. Vicki1 point -

Yes he is. Even not knowing of him the movie would be worth a watch. He was just such a gentle, soft spoken, amazing man that it might make you wonder if he was really like that or was it just an act. But yes, he was. If you've got 4 minutes this is an amazing clip of the real Fred Roger testifying before the Senate in 1969.1 point -

I wish they all would design them to be spring loaded like the Hawk and ( I think ) Hegner.. So much nicer not to even have to take the time to raise it up.. once blade is unhooked the arm goes up on it's own and out of the way.. Nice when a blade breaks too.. as the upper arm doesn't keep running..1 point

I posted a reference to one project earlier in this thread but there is another one I am now engaged in that is closer to the spirit of 'we are all in this together' that the pandemic is encouraging in most of us. That project is to create then mail simulated sunsets on Lake Pivabiska to may friends: I talk abut the project in the thread:1 point
