From what heritage did this scroll work come?
amazingkevin and 3 others reacted to Blaughn for a topic
I have been a large format photographer for years. I took this picture of an old abandoned farm house north of Fargo North Dakota in 1999. I was struck by the intricate craftsmanship above the window and still evident in the vertical casing on the right side that showed through despite the decay. Would you guess the design was from German, Swedish/Norwegian or other heritage?4 points -

well its been a good and productive day!! the birds in bird cages are finished and being polyurthined, I also put my face picture and spikes face picture in the dewalt scroll saw arm holders from steve good and then I painted those to. as I always told my children when they were little and would run out of the bathroom after there baths THIS IS NOT A NUDIEST COLINE!! LOL it wasnt so bad when I caught them while they were still in the house but every now and then one or the other of them would get outside lol I laugh now when I think about it, the vision of me with a towl in my hands running down the sidewalk yelling this is NOT a nudest coline!! lol as I chased a small nakied boy or girl down the sidewalk lol anyway I took some pictures of these but they didn't come out very well. I will have spike take pictures of them for me after there all dired. lol in the mean time you can look at these. the first on is a bear door holder I put a scarf on him as im sure he gets cold standing on that snow lol then theres the abc puzzle now this next one is a bird puppet... I have the same pattern in crochet.. I made a crochet one for all my kids when they were little and then never made any more after that because they took so long to make lol and of course I still have the crochet pattern but when I saw this scroll saw puppet set I was so happy!! lol only took a day or so to make and then only because I never work on anything for more then half an hour or so. the kids just love them and so do a lot of adults lol someday i'll make one for me lol but every time anyone sees one they ask can I have it?? lol and there gos my little birdie lol next time I make one for me im hiding it when someone comes to visit!! and then of course there the little bird pen holder. I made a lot of different pen holders for awhile … i'll have to see if I can find a place to orderthe pen holder part again before I make any more. hum for some reason theres 2 pictures of the puzzle!! lol and it wont let me delete one of them for some reason so I guess you ll have to just see it twice lol well im off to get something to eat everybody have a great day!!3 points -

Spring Has Sprung - Scroll Saw Challenge

It's a beautiful spring day in WA! My first stab at Intarsia -- a box with a rose on the lid. I saw one by Robert Ardizzoni and thought it would be a nice mother's day present for my wife. It's made from walnut and maple. She has a bit of trouble getting the lid to sit properly, as it is hardly symmetrical!3 points -
Thought I'd start a new thread on small blades. Lots of good opinions. I have had these Pike blades for a long time used for cutting brass and steel. I ran accross them last night and tried them on the scroll saw today. Cutting 1/4" BB with no backer. They cut beautifully and are controllable at medium speeds. They are #2, not 2/0 but just #2 with 44 tpi. hey also seem to be a bit cheaper. I saw #2 at $22 per gross. The jeweler's blade sizes are designated differently than scrolling blades. They go from 8/0 with 84 tpi to #8 with 28 tpi. That's all I know about them. If anyone else has experience with these types of blades, join in.3 points

A very good friend and neighbor with Parkinson’s passed away, we used to go for breakfast at different restaurants around town and also go out for dinner with our wife’s. Any way his wife asked me if I could make an urn for his remain, she said it is a sentimental value to her. Well I am not in the urn making business, so after discussing her request, she wanted something simple but with nice wood (I made lots of crafts fir them before). In the shop I go with a heavy heart even though we new that the end was close, this is what I came up with. His name was Gerry Brown.2 points -

Finally my Mega sized beast has hit the road to its new home. It's just over 30 x 42 inches before the framing. The letters are 3 inches tall and the centerpiece is 25 x 15 inches. All but the frame is Baltic Birch plywood in 3/4 for the orange borders along with the centerpiece and 3/8 and 1/4 most everywhere else. The centerpiece was segmented and shaped with a Dremel. Big Thank you to Col Pilgrim for being my second eyes and wonderfully brutal critic on the centerpiece.2 points

I knew they've been mentioned many times.. I did a quick search for "Pike" on the general forum section and found a few topics about them.. I was certain Randy ( @hotshot ) used this brand.. and this topic seemed to have quite a lot of discussion about them so here is some reading..2 points

I use the 2/0 ones of these for 1/8" bb almost exclusively. They cut super tight areas but do leave a mess on the back because no reverse teeth. No big deal as most of my stuff has a backer. I just sand the pieces which I would have done anyway. Cant beat the price.2 points

Small Picture Frames
namunolie reacted to cowboyup3371 for a topic
I took another one of Steve Good's patterns but reduced the size to match what stock I had to make these picture frames. They will hold 3.5" x 5" photos instead of the 4"x6" he originally called for and are made from curly red oak. These five are for my two daughters, two of my great-nieces, and my cousin's granddaughter. Although I originally made these just because, my eldest will turn 22 tomorrow and so the one set up for landscape pictures is her birthday gift. The four dark ones have a black cherry stain with a lacquer finish while the light colored frame has just lacquer on it (that great-niece said she wanted a light colored object - still not knowing what). Small Picture Frames by Scott Baker, on Flickr1 point -
I cut this fun pattern by @lawson56 of The Monkeys for my shop wall today. Got in a rush to finish and nailed the backer to the front. Not my first time to do this. Thankfully the back side looked about as good as the front in this case. I loved watching these guys on Saturday mornings as a kid, so I'll enjoy seeing them on my wall. Even if it's a mirror image. 1/2" oak, about 6 1/2" X 9"1 point

oh that is so cool!!! beautiful workmanship!!! I inhearted my exs lath when he died, and he had all kinds of blanks for pen making and some small tool I think you use to put it together...iv seen small laths for making pens and often wounder if they can be made on a big lath? I don't know if he got the big lath for big things and then died before he could get the smaller lath for pen making. iv bought a book on the lath but so far I need to get some kind of square wood that I can practice turning on. lol I have a lot of the lath chisles too im thinking of maybe trying to take a lath class at johnsons work bench over the summer if they have one this year and if I can manage to get out of the house lol but if not i'll just keep reading my book and try to learn it that way lol but im rattleing here sorry its just such a great looking pen it makes me want to go out play with the lath!!1 point -

A stack cut of 3 x 1/4" = 3/4" wood. I think that is too thick for a #1R MGT blade. The blade has 13.7 TPI. You might consider the Pegas #1 Skip blade which has 22.7 TPI. Only problem, this is not a reverse blade.1 point -

Hello kmmcrafts, I have already spoken to Hegner uk. It was them who told me that they only sell the complete quick release. Thanks very much for your offer. I did though have to bite the bullet and buy a new clamp so I am not in a state of full stop. The reason I was enquiring about the swivels was to get some in stock in case this happened again. The shaft size is 0.107” then of course there is the recess for the o rings. Might be interesting to see if they are the same size as on the Seyco site. Then if it happens again I will have an alternative to aim for. Once again I really appreciate your offer but am ok at the moment. Barry.1 point -
Awesome. 4 to go unless you put in the ACT, then it's 5. Marg1 point

Barry, have you tried the Hegner site in the UK? Here is a link. https://advanced-machinery.myshopify.com/pages/frontpage Have you only send emails or have you tried to call them as well? I see they have phone numbers listed. You only need the very small swivel inserts with the O-ring?? Do you have a dial caliper to be able to measure the swivel? I have a few of the swivels new from Seyco.. I try to keep wear parts on hand.. I'd have to look but I think they come as a set ( ie you get a swivel and a set screw for the opposite side ).. They probably are the same size but I might be able to get you some measurements from my new ones if you have a way to measure as well.. I thought Hawk was only the hard ones to get through to.. This virus deal has a lot of business's either shut down or only running limited staff and hours.. My opinion is if they are having to be shut down or slower response times etc.. they should make a statement on the websites.. I had some issues last couple weeks with one company I ordered from... Their site didn't mention they was running with no helpers.. but they did mention shipping companies are running slow.. but it took them 3 weeks just to get my order in the mail..then with the slow shippers 4 days in the mail which should normally be 2 days.. (same state order..LOL) which made my order late to my customer.. I gave a full refund to the customer because it was a gift for her husbands birthday that showed up a couple days late.. She said it was okay but I refunded anyway.. even though it was out of my control anyway.. she had a special request order and the parts are not something I normally sell or stock and she knew I had to order them.. Anyway, If I was you I'd look into the link above that I posted as they are based in the UK.. I could send you the swivels I have but I don't think it'd be too far off from your $30 whole assembly by the time I pay shipping and the cost of the swivels.. Last time I sent a 2oz package to the UK it cost me $12 and that has been a while ago.. That was just cheap slow mail too..But if you want to chance that they're the same I'll send you one set of mine if you can't get through to someone.. They cost me about $10 by the time I paid shipping from Seyco so $22 USA funds if you want a set from me.. I don't sell parts.. but if you need to get back up and running I'd help you out that way if needed.. Like I said.. $8 more and you'd have a whole new clamp, LOL Another thought... maybe look for a dealer for the Excalibur, King.. There is another brand that I think sells to the UK but cannot think of it right now.. they all use the swivel I think.. DeWalt too.. somebody gotta be local source for you.. Hope something I've mentioned can help you get your needed parts..1 point

I used to buy mine from Lesley's patterns http://www.scrollsawbladespatterns.com/index.htm But over the years their service had dropped.. Always got my order but slower than a snail.. Always enjoyed dealing with them as they took Paypal and at that time I wasn't taking credit card payments for my online sales so there was always funds in my PayPal account.. Also they sell all three ( FD, Olsen, and Pegas ) of my blade brands and it was always nice to order from one place... just worked out well.. Loved dealing with sloans too and sure will miss their wonderful service.. I just placed an order with wooden teddy bear on Sunday and they sent me a tracking number Monday.. supposed to be here today.. so I think they may be the next go to place for Olsen & FD blades.. https://woodenteddybear.com/collections/olson-scroll-saw-blades1 point

Sacrificial backer for thin projects
scrollntole reacted to kmmcrafts for a topic
I cut 1/8 from time to time without a scrap sacrificial.. actually cut thin stock quite often around the holidays doing personalized ornaments.. I also use the #3 MG blades.. The hardest for any scroll sawer to learn is feeding the wood to the blade control.. many people will adjust a saws speed to help them control.. or they'll cut easy to cut areas until a blade starts to dull a bit before doing some delicate works that might go too fast for them with a new blade etc.. I learned to saw on a old two speed saw that low speed didn't work, LOL.. I now like to run my saws speed nearly full speed and I never adjust the speed unless I'm cutting metal or plastic.. My point is.. the saw isn't cutting too fast.. it's you feeding the wood to the blade too fast for you to control.. I think a faster blade speed gives a smoother cut edge and back side of the wood than a slow speed.. Everyone has their way of cutting.. and if you have to use a sacrificial piece or slow the blade down etc.. that's okay.. whatever gets you to a final piece and puts a smile on you is really all that matters..1 point -
