  1. A very good friend and neighbor with Parkinson’s passed away, we used to go for breakfast at different restaurants around town and also go out for dinner with our wife’s. Any way his wife asked me if I could make an urn for his remain, she said it is a sentimental value to her. Well I am not in the urn making business, so after discussing her request, she wanted something simple but with nice wood (I made lots of crafts fir them before). In the shop I go with a heavy heart even though we new that the end was close, this is what I came up with. His name was Gerry Brown.

    an easy cool off

After my big disappointment from the teddy bear I saw an easy piece on Steve Good's page that I needed to cut, just to bring back some confidence I lost from my last piece. So I did this one and felt a little better. Not much of a challenge here and do not even know what I am going to do with this one. But it did the job of making me believe a little in myself once more. So not all was lost in the long run. Dick heppnerguy

  3. well its been a good and productive day!! the birds in bird cages are finished and being polyurthined, I also put my face picture and spikes face picture in the dewalt scroll saw arm holders from steve good and then I painted those to. as I always told my children when they were little and would run out of the bathroom after there baths THIS IS NOT A NUDIEST COLINE!! LOL it wasnt so bad when I caught them while they were still in the house but every now and then one or the other of them would get outside lol I laugh now when I think about it, the vision of me with a towl in my hands running down the sidewalk yelling this is NOT a nudest coline!! lol as I chased a small nakied boy or girl down the sidewalk lol anyway I took some pictures of these but they didn't come out very well. I will have spike take pictures of them for me after there all dired. lol in the mean time you can look at these. the first on is a bear door holder I put a scarf on him as im sure he gets cold standing on that snow lol then theres the abc puzzle now this next one is a bird puppet... I have the same pattern in crochet.. I made a crochet one for all my kids when they were little and then never made any more after that because they took so long to make lol and of course I still have the crochet pattern but when I saw this scroll saw puppet set I was so happy!! lol only took a day or so to make and then only because I never work on anything for more then half an hour or so. the kids just love them and so do a lot of adults lol someday i'll make one for me lol but every time anyone sees one they ask can I have it?? lol and there gos my little birdie lol next time I make one for me im hiding it when someone comes to visit!! and then of course there the little bird pen holder. I made a lot of different pen holders for awhile … i'll have to see if I can find a place to orderthe pen holder part again before I make any more. hum for some reason theres 2 pictures of the puzzle!! lol and it wont let me delete one of them for some reason so I guess you ll have to just see it twice lol well im off to get something to eat everybody have a great day!!

  4. I started out to make this little intartia bear because I thought it had so much meaning and was so nicely designed by JGR. I just had to give it a try. Overall, I thought it was going pretty well until It was time to do the lettering on the medicine bottle. I had given it some thought and figured it was too delicate of letter cutting and so I decided I would just write in on with a small sharpie. I had one chance to get it right, as it was already glued in place. Well quickly I found out it was a big mistake and it ended up taking so much away from the piece. As you can see, the ink in the sharpie absorbed into the grain of the wood and resulted in a really bad case of the ink running into the pours of the wood. That was the start of my frustrations and disappointments for the past couple of weeks. I will post the new piece of bad failures for me in a couple of days, when I go ahead and post my most frustrating piece, ( for me ), I have ever made. Dick heppnerguy

  7. Finally my Mega sized beast has hit the road to its new home. It's just over 30 x 42 inches before the framing. The letters are 3 inches tall and the centerpiece is 25 x 15 inches. All but the frame is Baltic Birch plywood in 3/4 for the orange borders along with the centerpiece and 3/8 and 1/4 most everywhere else. The centerpiece was segmented and shaped with a Dremel. Big Thank you to Col Pilgrim for being my second eyes and wonderfully brutal critic on the centerpiece.

  8. I usually get my wife roses on Mother's Day but with the lock down still in place it was going to be a challenge this year. So I made a card and a Steve Good pattern. This is the inside of card and the flowers in African Mahogany. I hope all the Mothers out there have a great day.

    Mothers day

My hubby made me a pen for Mothers Day. Gigi style blank, Maple, Cocabola, Chechen, and Black Veneer. What makes this even more special is he used the lathe tools that were is fathers. His father taught his wood working when he was growing up. His father passed away 33 years ago.

  13. It's a beautiful spring day in WA! My first stab at Intarsia -- a box with a rose on the lid. I saw one by Robert Ardizzoni and thought it would be a nice mother's day present for my wife. It's made from walnut and maple. She has a bit of trouble getting the lid to sit properly, as it is hardly symmetrical!

  16. For those who make the little 3d bird house ornaments. Do you make your own stock or purchase something like turning blanks? I'm cutting up 2x4s and gluing up cutoffs now but I would like to do this faster and use something other than pine 2x4s.

    bandsaw/ resaw questions

I make mostly toys. I resaw when I need to. I have a Shopsmith bandsaw, and it does an excellent job for me. Good blades and guides combined with and a properly aligned saw are key to getting a good resaw. I never use my resaw blade to cut curves. Once you twist the blade it will never track straight. I learned about this from paperwork included with my Wolf saw blades. Lately, I have been resawing parts after I cut them out. It the parts are very small I can resaw them on the scroll saw. I figured out how to do this after I cut a large number of parts for wood that was 1/4-inch to thick for my project. it worked like a charm.

    '57 Chevy Bel-Air

Just finished a 3/4 view of a 1957 Chevy Bel-Air convertible. I had been a request from Heppnerguy. As usual, the design took longer than the cutting. 8 day/4 day. Plaque is 17 x 10 on BBPW with 1/4" backer. I also did a video of the project that I am still editing and because of the size, I will have to post on YouTube. I'll update this posting once I'm done. Pike Blades

Thought I'd start a new thread on small blades. Lots of good opinions. I have had these Pike blades for a long time used for cutting brass and steel. I ran accross them last night and tried them on the scroll saw today. Cutting 1/4" BB with no backer. They cut beautifully and are controllable at medium speeds. They are #2, not 2/0 but just #2 with 44 tpi. hey also seem to be a bit cheaper. I saw #2 at $22 per gross. The jeweler's blade sizes are designated differently than scrolling blades. They go from 8/0 with 84 tpi to #8 with 28 tpi. That's all I know about them. If anyone else has experience with these types of blades, join in.

oh that is so cool!!! beautiful workmanship!!! I inhearted my exs lath when he died, and he had all kinds of blanks for pen making and some small tool I think you use to put it together...iv seen small laths for making pens and often wounder if they can be made on a big lath? I don't know if he got the big lath for big things and then died before he could get the smaller lath for pen making. iv bought a book on the lath but so far I need to get some kind of square wood that I can practice turning on. lol I have a lot of the lath chisles too im thinking of maybe trying to take a lath class at johnsons work bench over the summer if they have one this year and if I can manage to get out of the house lol but if not i'll just keep reading my book and try to learn it that way lol but im rattleing here sorry its just such a great looking pen it makes me want to go out play with the lath!!

  28. There was a recent thread about band saws and you're right, many different opinions. I will tell my sad tale. I own a Grizzly G0457 band saw which I bought new about 5 years ago. It worked great for about 3 years. Like you, I'm able to get scraps from others which I cut into thin stock. My saws developed a couple of problems. I was unable to set the tension correctly and it wouldn't saw straight. If I set it to saw a 1/2" thickness, by the time I got to the end of the board it was half that. I have spoken with Grizzly service and they have been friendly, but not terribly helpful. Whatever the problem is, it's beyond my capabilities to repair. Here is my problem with the brand: There is no local authorized service center. We have a very capable repair person in town, but he isn't trained on Grizzly products. That limits my options to sending my saw to the Grizzly service facilities of which there are only two. One in Bellingham, WA and one in Missouri. To ship the saw ( it weighs almost 300 lbs.) would be prohibitive. So there it sits in my shop collecting cobwebs. My point to this rambling rant is to say that whatever brand you decide to buy, make sure you can get it serviced. Even the best saws will break from time to time.

  35. I have been a large format photographer for years. I took this picture of an old abandoned farm house north of Fargo North Dakota in 1999. I was struck by the intricate craftsmanship above the window and still evident in the vertical casing on the right side that showed through despite the decay. Would you guess the design was from German, Swedish/Norwegian or other heritage?

  36. Will have to talk to Mother Nature to turn the thermostat up quite a bit, flurries here this a.m. and freezing overnight. Hopefully she will check the calendar again and bring the nice weather. I made this elevated garden box with Western Red Cedar(should last for years) size is 36”L x16W x 13” D.

  38. How gracious of you to make an urn on this sad time. I think you did a real nice job on this project with a wood choice that looks so nice and yet without too much bling. It would be one that I would want selected for me if I had that choice. You have made a very treasured keep sake for a very treasured friend and his family. It is simply beautiful. I am very sorry for his families loss as well as yours and your wife's. Dick heppnerguy

  39. Beautiful urn. I'm sorry about the loss of your friend. I don't really understand the protrusion in the front. Maybe another photo from the side would give me a better visual. It's not really necessary so don't go to any trouble but, I was curious. God Bless! Spirithorse

    Pike Blades

They do cut fine detail well. The price can't be beat and fuzzies are removed quickly with a flame. Don't know why these are not sold to the scrolling community as still another option. I still love my Pegas blades.

  49. The items that immediately come to mind are the two Spring themed Welcome Plaques that we hand on our front door (only one at a time ). The first one is a Sheila Landry design: The second is my design but incorporates bird patterns that I purchased from Sheila: Right now, the second plaque is on our door to welcome visitors (I'm sorry to say, from a distance of 2 metres).

    Scrolling Chair

I have one of these. It took me a long time to find one that had enough adjustment range. I like it a lot. I have it adjusted so all I need to do to start my saw is relax my foot.
