    Bread Basket

Our neighbour, Penn, has taken up bread baking as one of his pandemic-coping activities. I have gladly taken on the taster/tester role. Penn's French Baguette utilizing old Cheddar cheese is particularly good : I made him this, Steve Good designed, basket as a small thank-you gift:

  3. Today, May 12, is our 25th anniversary. Made this for us using lace wood with painted backer. It is a Sue May pattern for the outer ring I found in the pattern vault here a pattern that Grampa made for the hands. Then made a copy of a wedding picture.

  5. Modified this Steve Good magazine holder pattern a bit. Stretched out the front piece (actually, just cut three of them end-to-end, one long piece), added two additional dividers in the middle (stack-cut 4, then notched out the front on the two middle pieces so that the front piece would fit, as the original design called for the front piece to be attached on the inside of the sides, not to the front of the sides), and opened up the back a bit (didn't have enough 1/4 BB ply to make a solid back). Were I going to make another one, I would attach the front and back pieces to the front and back of the sides/middle, as having them recessed the thickness of the ply reduced the front-to-back space just enough that some of my pattern books didn't fit. Still, it helps to clean up my office desk, so overall I'd call it a win! Lots of curves to this one, it was a fun cut overall.

  6. I'm going to try this again. Hello everyone. Last fall I posted pictures of a lighted shadow box of ELVIS that I made as a present for someone special in our lives. Our niece turns 50 this month and she may be the biggest Bruce Springsteen fan in the country , she has seen him in concert more than 10 times, so I decided to do this for her. I used an old LP record that I had here in the house and found the image of THE BOSS on the internet, made a copy and started cutting the vinyl record. There were a few very small opening that had to be cut but I used a number 2 Pegas blade on the slowest speed and fortunately, I was successful. I then custom made the mouldings on the router table and sanded the back side of the plexiglas and proceeded to put this together, I had to drill a small hole on the front of the frame for the IR receiver, which is used to control the LED lights in the frame. This receiver can be seen on the lower right side of the frame in one of the pictures that I will attempt to attach here, you will also see how the USB power cord is attached through the side of the frame. I also will try to attach a very small video that shows the LEDs pulsating to the music, it will be nothing short of miraculous if this works. We can’t wait to give it to her tomorrow. Thanks for looking. I hope this works. The Boss Video with audio.MOV

  7. Like Karl noted, it looks like the problem is tear out from the drill bit. As the drill bit exits the wood, it is breaking the grain on the bottom of the board.Three things to prevent or minimize this. First, make sure you use a sharp bit, second, you must use a backer board. The backer board supports the grain in the blank so it doesn’t splinter as the drill bit breaks through. Third, you must match the drill speed to the type of drill bit you are using. There are all kinds of speed charts available on line. Wood Magazine has a great one available online.

  10. We had an old card table that the top was bad on so I made a new top for it. The top was too big for my scrollsaw so the wife drew a football around Herky and I cut it out with a jigsaw and then cut Herky out on the scrollsaw then painted and glued back in place. Gonna give it to our son he's a big Iowa Hawkeye fan.

  12. I usually get my wife roses on Mother's Day but with the lock down still in place it was going to be a challenge this year. So I made a card and a Steve Good pattern. This is the inside of card and the flowers in African Mahogany. I hope all the Mothers out there have a great day.

  14. A very good friend and neighbor with Parkinson’s passed away, we used to go for breakfast at different restaurants around town and also go out for dinner with our wife’s. Any way his wife asked me if I could make an urn for his remain, she said it is a sentimental value to her. Well I am not in the urn making business, so after discussing her request, she wanted something simple but with nice wood (I made lots of crafts fir them before). In the shop I go with a heavy heart even though we new that the end was close, this is what I came up with. His name was Gerry Brown.

  15. After my big disappointment from the teddy bear I saw an easy piece on Steve Good's page that I needed to cut, just to bring back some confidence I lost from my last piece. So I did this one and felt a little better. Not much of a challenge here and do not even know what I am going to do with this one. But it did the job of making me believe a little in myself once more. So not all was lost in the long run. Dick heppnerguy

  16. dgman said it, but it is good advise, so I will second it. You need a backer board when drilling. I use an old cut off 1 x 6 or something like that as a backer when drilling. Using a drill press, just set the depth to go into the backer an 1/4 in or so. Let the drill bit do the work and don't force it into the wood.

  17. It also appears that your drill bit is dull or that you are forcing it through the plywood rather than let it cut it's way through Just guessing since there are splintered places where the bit came out the back side. this would give your surface ply a place to start tearing away from the other layers as you cut.

I have yet to find one of your projects that did not top the scales. Not a toy guy here. but one has to enjoy anything you make..Almost makes me want to get on the floor and play with them, but that is not a good idea any more because it is too hard to get back off the floor, now days Dick heppnerguy

  19. After I posted my soapbox issue, I went to Amazon to see what is available. They are not on sale right now. But also, if you are only going to print patterns or receipts, a monochrome b/w one at $100 ain't bad. The cartridges never go bad from what I have been told. You might have to shake them every once in a while. I haven't had to do that. I got the low ink message a couple of time on the black one but there is a way to "fool" the printer into thinking it has a new cartridge. I love YouTube.

  40. I started out to make this little intartia bear because I thought it had so much meaning and was so nicely designed by JGR. I just had to give it a try. Overall, I thought it was going pretty well until It was time to do the lettering on the medicine bottle. I had given it some thought and figured it was too delicate of letter cutting and so I decided I would just write in on with a small sharpie. I had one chance to get it right, as it was already glued in place. Well quickly I found out it was a big mistake and it ended up taking so much away from the piece. As you can see, the ink in the sharpie absorbed into the grain of the wood and resulted in a really bad case of the ink running into the pours of the wood. That was the start of my frustrations and disappointments for the past couple of weeks. I will post the new piece of bad failures for me in a couple of days, when I go ahead and post my most frustrating piece, ( for me ), I have ever made. Dick heppnerguy

I normally don’t write reviews for items, however; I made a quarantine buy. Ordered it through Papa’s workshop and it arrived today. Instructions were so easy, a caveman could do it. Finally sat down to try it rather than a block of wood and all I can say is why didn’t I do this sooner. Makes scrolling even easier. Only reason I am writing this is in case someone was on the fence like I was. Best 45 dollars I have spent all lock down!
