  1. So I created a pattern of a skull wearing nerd glasses and decided to give it a try... turned out good and now awaiting stain. I also am attaching two finished monster of frankenstein projects. I need to dedicate more time to scrolling!

    An experimental bowl

A little experiment I'm trying with my scroll saw -- a flower cut like a bowl -- still have some kinks and angles to work out -This is mostly freeform cutting based on an actual flower frrom my yard -- it's not something I've seen anybody try quite like this but I could have missed it somewhere -I think I may have to go bigger to make it work as an actual bowl - more shaping with the dremel to do also

Cut this for a going away present. Used a 3 UR FD blade and red cedar. I then dipped in teal oil. Satisfied with the results, but strive for perfection. Hope you guys enjoy it.

    John Wayne.

@Kris Martinson. Big thanks to forum member Kris for sending me this fantastic pattern of the great John Wayne. I have used Cedar for the pattern and Yew for the frame. Cedar is a fantastic wood to cut and smells great. This was cut with a Hegner and Olson 2/0r blade. I just need to add a few coats of Danish oil and John will be ready for the wall. Regards, Paul.

  6. Tony has finished my new workshop and I must admit to being very proud of him. He's done a brilliant job and I absolutely love it. It's 13' x 10'. And I managed, eventually to put a small video up,,, 20200516_120340[1].mp4

    New guy -- Arizona

I just realized that I never introduced myself -- I'm a former plumber in my professional life. Then just over 2 years ago (January 2018) I needed a secret santa gift. Being a bit broke I found a piece of cedar fence and made a box -- very basic. But then I was hooked. After that I worked with my Dremel for a year -- Was gifted my first scroll saw (Ryobi) Jan 2019 and up-graded to a Pegas earlier this year. No previous experience in woodworking beyond a little construction so I'm teaching myself as I go. My working name comes from combining the first initials of all my kids - their spouses - and grandkids and playing with them till I found something that made sense -- can I buy a vowel please?

  10. Been working on this one ever since I finished the Lord's Prayer a couple weeks ago. FINALLY getting to the point that I'm putting finish on it. Pic was taken about 2 minutes after the spray gun first hit it, so there's a lot of "shine" that won't be there when it's all dry. Minwax Spar Urethane, semi-gloss. The cutting is 1/4" aircraft-grade Birch ply, background is dark-stained 1/4" oak ply from the bigbox, and lettering and overlays are 1/8" aircraft maple. Had some question for quite some time as to whether I wanted to stain the first overlay like the oak background - finally decided to do it. Sure am glad I did. This one was FUN, and just adds to the addiction. Looking for another design to play with now.

    An experimental bowl

I love the wood choice! If you decide to do more of this type of work you may want to invest in something a bit beefier than the Dremel. The Fordom tools are nice but I have an old 3/4 horse motor with a flexshaft that I found at a yard sale. It has a chuck on one end that will hold 1/4 shaft burrs etc. But even with the dremel and some https://kutzall.com/collections/burrs you can remove a lot of wood fast.

  17. You are correct, it does help. I want you to know, I am doing fine and feeling successful. I didn't want to lay this on everyone here but it sometimes helps to talk about your troubled times and this is like 'family' here so I just poured it out. Dick heppnerguy

  18. well right now im working on putting my sweater together and iv started carvining on the 2nd bulldog tooth pick holder but i thought id put up a few pictures anyway as i have no idea how long those 2 projects will take to finish. lol now lets see the first one is a puzzlee of a roman solder i think ..lol then theres the pumpkin lamp it looked pretty good when it was all let up, and now still with the howlleen them i made a pull along black cat. lol i used my zapped cat pattern i got form the winterfield collection and just paited it blaxk and put it on a base with wheels...i sold 3 of those right way lol then of course dragon lovers must have at least one dragon in there kitchen so heres a dragon paper towl holder lol l thught this one was cute. lol and then theres the airplain lamp someone asked me to make for there son, i didnt have a lampshade to put on it but the people didnt care they could get there own lamp shade..now lets see oh yes the bless this house sign i took a pence and outlined the tree and house so id know where to put the green and blue on the baker boad. now my girls used to love barbie dolls and of course they needed furnture for there dolls so i learned how to make a few things for the out of wood, those sold real good to lolo and the last picture is of my oldest daughters shapie dog named coco. he died a few years back but helen really like the picture of him and she still has it hanging on her wall. the front and baker board are made from the same materal...i just turned the baker board over and painted it black. i think it came out pretty good and helen loved it so thats all that matters to me. lol well im off everyone have a great day evening or night depending on where you live lol

    Shellac question

I usually use the rattle can but if I use the liquid it's cut with denatured alcohol about 50:50. A friend uses a 75% alcohol 25% shellac mix and 2 coats.

  27. Now I am jealous. I have a small quarter of the garage if I am lucky. I will admit Terry's always wanted me to have a wooden shed to myself but we just do not have the room. I would love a basement to but that's out of the question. Enjoy your new crafting home and make as much mess as you want. Marg

  36. Hey RJ, just been cutting as all events had been cancelled. My weekly local market started up today but I waited to see how it went, but I'll be there next week. I'll offer both metal and wood options and I'll report back on the results after a few events.

  37. Marg, Thank you for your message. It is wonderful to have supportive people in your life and here is where 'family' also resides. I often think about the time a couple of years ago when you came to America and we almost had an opportunity to meet in person. I would have enjoyed getting to meet you and your husband. I am over this depression thing and back on track. I feel so much better and hope to never have this type of thing back in my life again. I have a wonderful woman for a wife and she is always there for me. Also I have God in my life and I am very glad about that. Dick heppnerguy

  38. Many people use the retractable leashes so I go with a single peg option. In one of the magazines there was a leash holder design. I will try to find it. Instead of a pre made peg they used a wooden dowel and attached a dog foot print also made of wood.

  39. Alright SSV Nation, I have been on a mission to update the house in the last two years. I laid flooring down at the start of quarantine, but one thing that has been bugging me. So to update the 1980’s door chime cover. I even let the War Dept. (My wife) choose the pattern. Hope this helps to inspire someone.

  47. Lockdown projects - I like this idea!! Actually, my year of new projects started long before the lockdown but I've managed to start/complete quite a few over the past few months. And now, with the latest complete, another is on the table with the first couple pieces cut already. First pic is what I've managed to complete, center & bottom is the new project and my progress so far. The American Legion sign was/is over 60 years old and was showing its age rather plainly. Looks pretty good now, restored to her original greatness.

  48. I cut 1/8 from time to time without a scrap sacrificial.. actually cut thin stock quite often around the holidays doing personalized ornaments.. I also use the #3 MG blades.. The hardest for any scroll sawer to learn is feeding the wood to the blade control.. many people will adjust a saws speed to help them control.. or they'll cut easy to cut areas until a blade starts to dull a bit before doing some delicate works that might go too fast for them with a new blade etc.. I learned to saw on a old two speed saw that low speed didn't work, LOL.. I now like to run my saws speed nearly full speed and I never adjust the speed unless I'm cutting metal or plastic.. My point is.. the saw isn't cutting too fast.. it's you feeding the wood to the blade too fast for you to control.. I think a faster blade speed gives a smoother cut edge and back side of the wood than a slow speed.. Everyone has their way of cutting.. and if you have to use a sacrificial piece or slow the blade down etc.. that's okay.. whatever gets you to a final piece and puts a smile on you is really all that matters..
