    Sam Custodio Pattern

1/4" BB, no backer while cutting it and used a #2 Pike jewelers blade. Someone has posted this before but I loved the pattern. Sam is one of my favorite designers.

  5. So I created a pattern of a skull wearing nerd glasses and decided to give it a try... turned out good and now awaiting stain. I also am attaching two finished monster of frankenstein projects. I need to dedicate more time to scrolling!

  8. When using a pre-stain conditioner, washcoat or sealer, one must be aware that less pigment will be absorbed into the grain, so the color will not be as dark as you might expect. It will be more uniform, but not as dark. This may affect the color choice of stain that you choose. As always, test on scrap before committing to the finished project.

  9. This great pattern by Bernd was the one that almost had me flicking in scrolling. I wanted so much to cut a really good pattern for my neighbor who owns a 1967 Chevy convertible that he restored and had owned for 17 years. He, like so many car enthusiasts loves and cherishes his car. I know how important this car was to him and how much he loved having it that I wanted the best pattern I could get to cut and give to him. Bernd stepped up to the plate and made the great pattern for me and then he cut it and made the video of it, that so many of you enjoyed in this forum. I was unable to do a satisfactory job cutting it and got myself really depressed, as this was to be a perfect gift. I messed up very badly and I was thinking I should just give up and flick in my scrolling hobby. Well, Bernd, being the giving and caring person he is, Sent me the plaque he made in his video to give to my neighbor. Following the chevy plaque failing, I followed with the nurse bear screw up. So, things were just not going well for me. Because of the encouragement from Bernd and several of you, in my previous posts, I am now over my depression and moving on. Thank you all for what you have done for me. I am not usually depressed and take things in stride. I just wanted this one to be perfect. My thanks especially go out to Bernd and all he did for me. 13. I have recently been sawing some rather large pieces of fret work and one of the most difficult things I have had to deal with, is getting the blade through the hole in the middle parts of the pattern. The holes are quite small and almost impossible to see, let alone trying to get the blade in the hole. I have been using an awl to poke into the bottom part of the hole, so that it is enlarged a little to help with this problem. This does help but I still have a lot of problems. Then I saw someone mention about also using the point of a pencil, sticking it into the hole and turning the pencil so that it also marks the hole with it's lead. This also helped quite a bit to see exactly where the hole actually is. However, as I was watching the video of the moon shiner guy, I noticed the maker of the plaque and the poster of the video, was using some kind of tool on the back side of the holes he had drilled. After I watched it a second time and thought it through, I took on of the pieces I was working on and had drilled what must have been done with a drill bit about 1/32 inch or smaller and with a 1/16th bid, drilled the back side of the hole just enough for a part of the tapered bit head went into the hole. I would estimate it to be, perhaps, one layer of 1/8 inch BB Ply. This created a very small funnel shape in the wood and once that was done, It was so much easier to feel and feed the saw blade into the hole. It was almost like i could do it blindfolded. John Wayne.

@Kris Martinson. Big thanks to forum member Kris for sending me this fantastic pattern of the great John Wayne. I have used Cedar for the pattern and Yew for the frame. Cedar is a fantastic wood to cut and smells great. This was cut with a Hegner and Olson 2/0r blade. I just need to add a few coats of Danish oil and John will be ready for the wall. Regards, Paul.

    An experimental bowl

A little experiment I'm trying with my scroll saw -- a flower cut like a bowl -- still have some kinks and angles to work out -This is mostly freeform cutting based on an actual flower frrom my yard -- it's not something I've seen anybody try quite like this but I could have missed it somewhere -I think I may have to go bigger to make it work as an actual bowl - more shaping with the dremel to do also

  19. It's a beautiful spring day in WA! My first stab at Intarsia -- a box with a rose on the lid. I saw one by Robert Ardizzoni and thought it would be a nice mother's day present for my wife. It's made from walnut and maple. She has a bit of trouble getting the lid to sit properly, as it is hardly symmetrical!

  23. The items that immediately come to mind are the two Spring themed Welcome Plaques that we hand on our front door (only one at a time ). The first one is a Sheila Landry design: The second is my design but incorporates bird patterns that I purchased from Sheila: Right now, the second plaque is on our door to welcome visitors (I'm sorry to say, from a distance of 2 metres).

  24. Here's the completion of that experiment -- I did some more shaping with the Dremel and then applied Danish oil. For those of you wanting to know how -- I'll get it down better but here's the nutshell version -- cut the bowl as you normally would -- then the top layer gets cut on the same line , but both angled in and out, then sanded down to about 1/2 it's original thickness . It seems to work best on thicker wood (tried on 3/8 baltic and failed miserably). Once I get it down I'll try to get more detailed than that . I did end up with a crack in this one because when I went to glue the base on it slid sideways but i didn't catch it for about an hour. I separated it again (cracking it) and re-glued. I'll be trying it again shortly , only larger. Edit -- I forgot to add -- the top ring was cut at 40 degrees outward and 30 inward the next was cut at 22 1/2 - the next at 15 - all on 4/4 black limba -- I may revise those angles on the next one

  35. Been working on this one ever since I finished the Lord's Prayer a couple weeks ago. FINALLY getting to the point that I'm putting finish on it. Pic was taken about 2 minutes after the spray gun first hit it, so there's a lot of "shine" that won't be there when it's all dry. Minwax Spar Urethane, semi-gloss. The cutting is 1/4" aircraft-grade Birch ply, background is dark-stained 1/4" oak ply from the bigbox, and lettering and overlays are 1/8" aircraft maple. Had some question for quite some time as to whether I wanted to stain the first overlay like the oak background - finally decided to do it. Sure am glad I did. This one was FUN, and just adds to the addiction. Looking for another design to play with now.

  47. Dick if there is a right and wrong way, I always manage to pick the wrong. Point in question I just ordered a Kindle book from Amazon, I have done it lots of times before, today I clicked on buy the audio book $10.99 instead of the Kindle Book $9.90. You can't return the audio books, so I am stuck with a book I cannot hear. Yes I did order the Kindle book as well. What did I do to cheer myself up? I bought myself a new phone. We are always here to listen and to offer encouragement, so take heart my friend and lean on your friends. Marg

    Wooden peg option...

I'm with Kevin I like the look of the metal hooks. The pegs do "blend in" nicer though for sure. Of the dozens of pieces I've sold so far, nobody had asked about a wooden peg option, so I know the metal hooks are liked. It will be interesting when I offer the option now what folks will lean towards. I just ordered 600 pegs so I'm counting on a few people wanting them. I don't even want to think about painting or staining them. I'm too lazy for stuff like that. LOL
