I seen the plans (16 pages worth) on Woodsmithplans.com. There is a lot of scrolling an sanding. Made from black walnut an white maple. The plans didn’t show the hand rails, front steps or the ballast in the track. I felt it was needed. I don’t have a way to do turning. So I just started sanding the main round engine using belt sander and anything else I could come up with. This is a gift to my youngest son so I wanted it to be totally made by me. It is hard to see in pictures but the sign on stand reads “New York Central Railroad Twentieth Century Limited Super Hudson Streamlined J3a Built 10 Between 1937-1938”. This has to be the most rewarding project that I have made in the 10+ years of woodworking! To see the emotion from my son when I showed it to him is what I will never forget. I have included a picture of the real engine and you notice I used the same engine number it had. Sorry for the long post but if you want anymore information just ask. Have probably over 40 hours in it. The stand is 30” long. Thanks for looking!8 points

Gong of the Ornament Pattern
RabidAlien and 2 others reacted to baggetta for a topic
Well this gong won't ring out and it is decorated to be a table ornament. I cut mine from a couple of different woods. The frame was cut from alder and stained lightly. The gong itself is cut from spalted maple. The base if plain ol' pine painted a deep red. I also put a backer on the gong and painted it the same color as the base, giving the whole project the feel of the ancient past. I used some of that copper wire that is wrapped around those scroll saw blades when you buy a pack. Makes a nice invisible hanger. Makes a nice decoration for those into art of the orient. I can't remember if I showed this before. My Grandson and I made it for a project he had to do about Rome a couple of years ago. Griff wanted make a Trireme, but after a bit of discussion and looking at pictures he changed his mind, thankfully Poppy and Griffin got top marks I can't find any stills. if I took any. 00002.mp43 points

Baseball puzzle for Connor
amazingkevin reacted to Hudson River Rick for a topic
My niece's oldest son is a baseball nut just like his uncle. We both need to see this COVID nonsense end so some body can yell "PLAYBALL". Until then, knowing how much he is missing his pals on Little League, I cut a puzzle of him receiving his "All Star" trophy last season. 139 pcs including my first attempt at cutting figural/whimmsies. I hope this works, thanks for looking. Sorry about the image, it was taken on my phone and then turned on it's side by the APPLE goblins, and I can't figure out how to fix it.1 point -
A friend of mine flew his drone over my local weekly market today and started this video clip at my booth. I definitely need one of these drones. My first event of the year. It was so-so, nothing fabulous and below what I had hoped for a holiday weekend, but hey at least I'm doing markets again. DJI_0028_3.mp41 point

Couple fun ones
Woodrush reacted to RabidAlien for a topic
Love the dragon one (but both are nicely cut!) I did that pattern for my daughter, at 25% size, added a little half-circle at the top and drilled a hole in it, then ran a leather cord through. She wears it like a pendant.1 point -

I bought the saw from Denny at ArtCrafters great service and easy to work with and a good price . I would recommend them if buying the Pegas.1 point

Yes, I would remove the pieces with an X, however you have to be careful cutting the other lines as if they are cut right through to the intersections (as drawn) pieces will drop out.1 point

I read/heard recently that you don't want to center the blade on the wheels. The correct way, I heard is to put the deepest part of the gullet in the center with the teeth a bit closer the outside of the wheel.1 point

Spring is when the elk leave our property and head for the back woods, so I made two boxes with elk images. The boxes were made by stack cutting walnut and poplar, then mixing the cut pieces up a bit. The elk images were cut on an angle so they would fit into each other without a gap due to the thickness of the blade -- a new technique for me!.1 point

Just a few things that came to mind while reading through these posts. Gluing end grain to long grain is bad. Wood expands and contracts with the humidity across the grain and very little with the grain. If I build it in Florida and ship it to Arizona the joint is going to fail. Dowels are not always round. In fact, they usually are not. A 1/2-inch dowel may be larger or smaller then 1/2-inch. You should always measure the dowel and drill the appropriate size hole. A 1/2 inch dowel will be a very tight fit for a 1/2 inch hole. It may not fit at all one the glue is applied. The glue makes it swell. Screws in end grain is a weak joint and may spit the wood if it is used without the proper size pilot hole. Expansion and contraction of the wood may cause the screw to loosen after a few seasons. A properly made mortise and tenon joint is probably the strongest wood joint you can make. It has been in use for centuries and was designed to use in cross-grain situations. There are plenty of videos that show test on the strength of wood joints. If I were going to make something that I wanted to be able to take apart and reassemble I would use a connector bolt. This is what Ikea uses for butt joints in their knock down furniture.1 point

Memorial Day
Kris Martinson reacted to RabidAlien for a topic
Today, we would have diagnosed it as severe PTSD. Coupled with the way he was treated when he returned, being a Native American, plus the general public mentality that men should ManUp and not show that they're bothered by something meant he had nowhere to turn for help. By all accounts, when sober, he was a great guy. James Bradley's "Flags of Our Fathers" follows the six men in the photo through the battle for Iwo Jima, and the survivors afterwards (follow-on "Letters from Iwo Jima" shows the battle from the Japanese side, and is an eye-opener to the mentality of the IJA's senior NCO and officer corps). Its an excellent read.1 point -

Have any of you read "Flags of Our Fathers"? It's a story about the flag raisers on Iwo Jima. A gut wrenching book, in a gut wrenching time. I highly recommend the book. Have a box of Kleenex nearby if you do read it Nice job Kris!1 point -

Hi everybody. I'm Doc from Australia. I make wooden toys for a living so don't do a lot of the intricate scrolling that I see here. Most of my work consists of drawing around a template and cutting said piece out usually on 19mm or 35mm pine and adding wheels or something. Some puzzles and a variety of 'sets' - animal families, dolls house folk and the like. Occasional portrait or commission work. I have a 21" and 30" Excalibur but actually use my 30" jobby for most of my work (it copes nice with long hours at a time cutting), since blade changes are so easy anyway and I don't have to walk to the other end of the workbench to use the 21". Yeah, lazy AND old Anyhoo, I'm hoping to help any new folks because there was so much I didn't know when I first started and I'd love to share it. Also not afraid to learn something new Should also apologize in advance for renewing old posts because I just know it will happen lol1 point
