  1. The pattern is by Diana Thompson, but I modified it by inlaying a horse. I follower Jim Finn's recommendation to use 3/8" stock for the inlay. My wife suggested the white horse inlayed into the Walnut. All other woods are scraps. It was cut on the EX21 using FD Polar #3 and #9 blades. Yes, I still have some FD blades at home. The finish is three coats of Minwax spray Lacquer Clear Satin. Comments welcome.

  2. I have been trying to spend more time with my wife and less in my shop. She does not complain of my time there but we are getting up there in age and I know we do not have a lot of time left to be together, so I do not want to spend too much time away from her and then have to regret that I put my hobby time in front of our time together. . That said, The Jones plaque is for my older son as part of his upcoming birthday. The letter plaque is an added present to my great granddaughter who is having an birthday this week and I thought she might like this little tuck in. It is a Steve Good pattern. The Baby star plaque is for our third new great grandbaby born within this calendar year. This one is a Sue Mey pattern and I have another new great grandson who will be born this month also and I am just waiting for the date to get that one finished. Dick heppnerguy

  3. My daughter was here in Arizona for a couple of weeks with her new husband, helping my younger son to ready and move into his new house. While they were here, my daughter told me her husband's birthday is next month and since we will be going up to Oregon for a couple of months, she wondered if I could make a plaque of Chris's Jeep, as it is something he really enjoys. She sent me a photo of his jeep so I made a pattern from it and cut this plaque for her to give to her husband on his birthday. She saw it before she left for home a couple of days ago and said that she really liked it. I was about 1/3 finished cutting it at that time. Here is the results. Dick heppnerguy

SSV nation, I joined in January and one of the first things I saw was a skull pattern. It reminded me of a good friend whom I have known for 20 years. I made a promise to myself that once I cut this skull, I have achieved my goal and I can cut just about anything. Below is the photo with 1/4 maple plywood and thin backing. The lesson learned here is to only have friends that like unicorns and not skull.

  8. Thanks RJ. This was a fun inlay.

  9. Fires? Fume extraction would be my biggest concern. Cutting the gears for a wooden clock with a laser, wheres the challenge in that. Scrolling precision gears was the most fun on all three of my clocks.

    Source for Blades...?

Flying Dutchman blades 1,3,5 polar and skip tooth are the most I use. I get them from Hawk Scroll saw website. That's the cheapest place I have found. Cheaper than many others.

  11. I think the question has been asked here on the forum a couple times and if I remember correctly, the vast majority prefer the "deadman" type (momentary). I know I do, if I drop over dead, I don't want my saw to sit there running for the two weeks or more before my wife notices I am gone and come looking for me!

  13. I can't believe I haven't found this site before now. I've been scrolling for about 15 years. I mostly work with smaller and simpler items - crosses and such. I came across this forum while looking for information on creating a pattern of my church (I'm a pastor). I don't trust myself, so I was looking for tutorials. I've attached a few of my more recent projects.

    Willie Revisited

I have scrolled a lot of Charles Dearing patterns recently. Charles writes that he gets requests to simplify his patterns. I like his more detailed works. He has a simplified Willie Nelson pattern that, though I liked, I found it too simple. So, after I finished it, I randomly drilled a bunch more holes Willy-Nilly, and just free formed my way to a bit fuller finished product. As I often do, I reduced the size down to 9 1/2”x 6 1/2.” I’m pretty happy with how it turn out.

  20. I've always been a car and old tractor enthusiast.. I've always had a vision of doing clocks like these when I first started scroll sawing.. but I couldn't get the word typed well enough in my asking for patterns and would always end up with a portrait pattern... feeling obliged to make what I asked for I did portraits for a long time.. Love doing them too.. maybe better than the clocks because you can stack cut and be more production type work BUT.. they just didn't sell well for me.. Yes they sell.. but not great.. Then when Steve Good did the 57 Chevy pattern I had a vision to custom make the design into the clock as I had envisioned years before.. Then I had a sample of a clock when asking for patterns to show.. Also many CNC machinist make car stuff and there seems to be a lot of vector drawings / coloring pages etc.. out there now that any times I can find an image I can make into a pattern myself.. Most of the clocks I have made was based off if that 57 of Steve Goods.. and All of them was a request from a customer and I made it and then I offer it in my online store.. many of which are just an image of the original one and made to order rather than made and ready to ship.. some cars are real popular to sell while some of the others I've only made the requested one.. It helps a lot too that I'm in a lot of car clubs and groups etc.. to get sales.. word of mouth goes a long way too. Thank you for the comments.

    3 dogs finished

I have finished the 3 dogs pattern that TDpainter drew for me. Thanks again Travis. I used a mix of blades on this, including spirals, but I reckon the ply was was too thin at 1/8", I reckon it should have been 1/4" baltic birch at least. The original request can be found in 'Pattern Requests'

    3 dogs finished

Looks like it came out pretty dang nice, but I know what you mean about the wood. The correct wood choices, depending on the pattern to be cut is really important and adds or distracts a lot if the choice was not perfect. Dick heppnerguy

  29. Denny, Really nice work on the box. Your inlay came out perfect. There is nothing but a beautifully done box. I too need to get back to trying inlay. I was not very happy with my last effort, so I only need to venture on like you did and see some good results Dick heppnerguy

  34. My first attempt was with 1/4" stock. Jim Finn suggested 3/8" stock. I used FD Polar #3 and adjusted the angle with sample cuts until I was satisfied with the fit. Then made the cut.

  37. Thanks Don, I'll check those programs out.. I hope to fire the laser sometime this summer.. I need to order a fire extinguisher before I set the shop on fire with it, LOL I've read some pretty bad stories on some of the laser groups.. I'm not firing the laser until I have some safety measures in place... otherwise I'd have probably already done a test run..

Thank you all for the comments and encouragement. I gave it to him a bit ago and as we were talking, he confided in me that he was just diagnosed with Cancer. So this was really special to him. In the line of work we did, usually the big C is just a matter of time due to the toxins we dealt with. Thank you all again and this project has even more meaning to me now. Thank you SSV.

  45. That is great! See many small parts outstanding job. When I did my steam Locomotive I used a circle cuter from HF. Don’t know if that is something you could have used. But I don’t think you are missing anything by not doing the inlay.

  46. Spring is when the elk leave our property and head for the back woods, so I made two boxes with elk images. The boxes were made by stack cutting walnut and poplar, then mixing the cut pieces up a bit. The elk images were cut on an angle so they would fit into each other without a gap due to the thickness of the blade -- a new technique for me!.

  47. First off welcome to the addiction ( hobby ) . I would suggest trying different brands and sizes of blades. You'll get a lot of information here as well as opinions. Personally I like Flying Dutchmen . Other swear by Pegas, Olson and many other brands. Each brand has it's own feel and they all cut wood, but have a slightly different feel to them . I get my blades from Mike's Workshop ( also the same as Wooden Teddy Bear ) at a very reasonable price and free shipping. Other will chime in on their particular blades of choice too and places where they purchase them for you. As for other questions, please feel free to ask, a lot of the people up here love to share knowledge and experience and opinions. Just an all around great place to be. Remember to exercise patience while learning and most importantly, have fun.

  48. It's a beautiful spring day in WA! My first stab at Intarsia -- a box with a rose on the lid. I saw one by Robert Ardizzoni and thought it would be a nice mother's day present for my wife. It's made from walnut and maple. She has a bit of trouble getting the lid to sit properly, as it is hardly symmetrical!

  50. I would hate to have to switch the saw off and on from the main switch up on top. And, the foot switch would be far cheaper to replace when it wears out.
