Fret Box
OzarkSawdust and 5 others reacted to munzieb for a topic
Recent rainy weather held me off from assorted outdoor projects so I decided to cut a project I had in my pattern library for quite a while. It's a narrow fret box made from Bubinga 10 x 4.5". Original pattern had straight sides and I decided to add furniture style feet. A little tricky cutting these small parts but I got it done.6 points -

Well it would appear that the 'bushings' on the upper arm of my saw need replacing. So off I went to order new. However, they have none in stock and not likely to have in the near future. However, they had a new 'upper arm' in stock so I bought that It cost me £56 !! Now off to tell Tony I will explain that it's cheaper than a new saw that would cost £700+ ---- If I've not posted by this time next week get them to dig up the garden as I'm likely to be under the lawn.3 points

Don from Brooklyn in Ontario provided me with this pattern. What I love about his patterns is the thin red outline with a light green fill. Makes cutting a real pleasure. The plaque is 14" X 5" X 1/2" oak. #1 PMG with 50/50 BLO. I nearly screwed up the edges on the router. My router is just a 1/4" trim router on a very makeshift table. The vertical adjustment is very crude and it was set too deep causing the router to bog down. I should have made a couple of shallow cuts then a finish cut. Worked out eventually. Still needs a backer and a couple of coats of poly semi gloss to finish.2 points -

Strange finishing problem
Hermit reacted to Bill WIlson for a topic
I have some thoughts on this subject and I'll try not to blather on longer than anyone has the patience to read. I tend to consider a finish in its broader sense. To me a finish is anything you apply to the wood after all the saw dust is made, which alters or enhances the appearance of the natural wood. Finishes serve a couple main purposes. They protect the wood from a variety of elements and they change the appearance in terms of color, grain contrast and/or sheen. I like to sometimes refer to it as a finishing schedule. It's a process that could encompass multiple operations and products that work together to create a final result that meets the requirements of the project. So in this context, a finish could refer to a stain, glaze, dye, grain filler, oil, wax, topcoat, or any combination thereof. I admit I have often interchanged the usage of the term "finish" between the process and a given top coat. As the name implies, a finish is the last thing you do to a project before calling it done, so I think either application is accurate.1 point -
I made this box for a friend who has had a ruff time, things are looking better for her. I used Popular. The top and bottom has natural danish pit and the center I used purple trans tint. The inside has a soft cushion covered with fabric to match. The picture makes it look more blue, but it really is a deep purple.1 point
