  1. Goat

    Humming Birds

Pattern by Steve Good. Used 1/4" BB for birds and backer. Went back and used a spiral for the veins as they were kinda hard to see. Doing so the spiral was pretty brutal on the edges so I had to widen a few areas to hide the chips.

    Eagle Head

Eagle head pattern by Grandpa from this forum. Thanks again for this awesome pattern. Edge glued aspen for the eagle (1/2") and backer (3/4"), pine for the frame. Satin poly finish. Its designed thick so it can stand on edge. Started with spirals, but had to switch as it was breaking some of the finer areas.

  5. Finished these Botas patterns. Stack cut 1/8 ply. All three sold. Backing on two as requested, with colours requested. Third one was trimed to fit the 8x10 frame. Colour backing was my choice. Frame purchased from Ikea.

  7. I just joined and am happy to be here, so thanks, Admins! I started just a couple years ago and purchased a Wen as my first scroll saw. I would have been happy with that as a beginner with no experience. But then my husband, Lee, and I were at the local pawn shop and saw this huge thing on a stand near the front. I knew nothing of brands of saws, so I read the sign on the side..."$120 as is. Doesn't run." I got my phone out and looked it up and it was an RBI Hawk Ultra 226v. Lee said "I bet I can get this running in 15 minutes." So we took a chance and bought it. He got it running like butta in 10, haha. I have used it for almost two years now and am completely addicted. We make signs and other creative things. We get really excited about found wood and fencing and repurposing something on its way to the dump. I love my scroll saw story because I really wasn't worthy of that saw. Linda

    The Elder

The Elder is finished. The pattern by Jim Blume. I used 1/4" Baltic Birch plywood 12" square and backed with black mat board. Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using Pegas #0 Spiral blades. The finish is one coat spray Shellac and one coat spray Lacquer Clear Satin. Of course framed at ArtCrafters.

I like that. Great job. Almost like my Clock tower I did with Dick's (heppnerguy) Guidance. Where is the pattern from.

  10. you can sand the inserts of the set screws,,,,,,tighten the thumb screw as much as you can.....but the truth of the matter is, this indicates it is time to replace the inserts of the set screws and thumb screws. Sanding the tips can help sometimes and even the blade ends but changing the inserts makes your saw like new again. The biggest problem with the above efforts is by having to apply more pressure to the thumb screw will eventually cause one or two problems or both. You will eventually wear out the threads on the set screw and have to replace it or you will cause the blade clamp to stretch and then the tips are no longer parallel and hence the little insert is only able to connect it's holding surface in part and the blade slips. Steve Good suggests that the inserts be replaced about 2 to 3 times a year depending on how often you use your saw. By making this change on a regular basis the clamp with not get stretched out of alignment, and the threads will not get warn and wobbly. Try it, I think you will be pleasantly surprised if you do. 12. The one with pegs you see above is the first request for pegs. Every customer the past 3 weeks that I've taken an order for, I show them the hooks and the pegs... So far it's about 15 for hooks and 1 for pegs. At this point I hope to use the 600 pegs I bought before I die of old age.

    Fret Box

Recent rainy weather held me off from assorted outdoor projects so I decided to cut a project I had in my pattern library for quite a while. It's a narrow fret box made from Bubinga 10 x 4.5". Original pattern had straight sides and I decided to add furniture style feet. A little tricky cutting these small parts but I got it done.

  14. Don from Brooklyn in Ontario provided me with this pattern. What I love about his patterns is the thin red outline with a light green fill. Makes cutting a real pleasure. The plaque is 14" X 5" X 1/2" oak. #1 PMG with 50/50 BLO. I nearly screwed up the edges on the router. My router is just a 1/4" trim router on a very makeshift table. The vertical adjustment is very crude and it was set too deep causing the router to bog down. I should have made a couple of shallow cuts then a finish cut. Worked out eventually. Still needs a backer and a couple of coats of poly semi gloss to finish.

  16. Thanks I almost ordered from Fox Chapel but the shipping charge was $20 US. So the cost would been over $50 cdn. I then thought I would check my library and I have it. Bought it at the open house a few years ago and never made anything from the book. Now I am going to get going. Thanks again. Don

  17. I believe that nickle was still standing on edge on your saw table when we had our visit a couple of weeks ago. You should be back in Mesa now and I hope you have some air conditioning where you are working as it is getting pretty dang hot down here now. Enjoyed our visit and getting to meet you and see your fabulous scroll work Dick heppnerguy

  19. Tiffany was booked, so.... Put this pattern together the other day, after watching the Clint Eastwood movie on TV (yet again). This is one of the best lines in a movie full of memorable quotes ("Dyin' ain't much of a livin', boy." "You gonna pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?") and one of the iconic poses from the movie posters. Dang thing is huge, there were parts where the distance between blade and corner of piece exceeded the 16" throat of my saw. Makes for some interesting cutting, having to run off into the waste areas and come back from the other direction. 3/8" ply, #1 Pegas MG blades (two of em), stack cut two at once. Next up, trimming the backers to size and seeing if Lowes has enough lumber to build a frame. Once I figure out a way to stain these (I'm thinking about "building" a container out of aluminum foil), these will be a dark color, probably Minwax Provincial or Honey, and the backer will be as light as I can get it. Probably do the frame dark, too. Pattern is linked here:

  21. Been really busy with Fathers Day orders since about 4 weeks ago.. Not a order yet today.. which is actually kind of nice maybe I'll get caught up so I can sort through my stickered lumber pile as I want to move it inside up in the upstairs of my shop and up on top of the rafters.. Probably about 500 bdft to move.. Be a day of exercise since I'm taking it from all the way from the end of my property ( probably 500ft to my shop and then upstairs and up a ladder to the top, LOL.. Think I'll take my chainsaw and chop the 12 footers in half.. maybe even the 10 ft ones.. Free lumber from my brothers mill I got last year.. not sure how good a deal free is when I have to sticker it move it.. move it again then sort it and move it again.. then it's rough cut so i have to plane it.. maybe resaw it and plane it again, LOL.. Probably worth it since most of it is birdseye hard maple and walnut..

  40. i to am not much help to you because i love them all.....if i HAD to chose though i chose the birds but only because my dad was a bird person....had bird feeders and bird houses all over the yard once mom made him move them from the pourch! lol it was getting to the point where she couldnt sit on her glider on the pourch because birds were flying around the pourch and resting walking on the pourch floor!! lol li wish i would have gotten a picture of that....id never seen birds be so unafraid of humans before....there of course all gone now that mom and dad are gone....maybe thats where i get my love for birds...i have several bird feeder patterns like the cat one i think i showed you guys on here that i have by the front door so i could watch the birds feed....but we dont fill it anymore as the birds never got the seeds because the squrals would always eat it first....we even tried to put a bird seed bell on it and with in an hour is was gone....pretty sure the squrells got that tooo.....im trying to figure out some way to put a screen on it so the birds can get the food and the squrells cant lol

I have been out selling at our farmers market three times, and all three were $100 over last years average sales. This Sat. I will be there again and it may also go well because it, like the other three , occur just before father's day. Most of my sales are purchases for gifts.

  45. The 2/0 might be a bit small but the 1 should be fine. I like to start in the bottom right corner and work my way up but thats just me. If the piece is too big the weight of it will cause all sorts of control problems. Little mistake here, little wiggly line there and they all add up.

  49. Just curious, but what brand of spirals and type do you use? I have used a lot of different spirals and while I think Olsen brand is probably the most aggressive and shredding as you called it blade of all of them.. Behind the Olsen would be the standard FD spirals.. They are also slight shredders but I don't think nearly as bad as the Olsen's .. The best one I've used is the FD New Spiral.. Also to mention about the blade sizes.. I use much smaller spiral blade on a project as I would with a straight blade.. So normally with a flat blade if I was to use a #3 or 5.. I would use a #2/0 spiral.. If I was to use the same number in a spiral ie #3.. they do a lot of shredding etc.. and leave a rough edge.... I rarely use anything other than a 2/0.. but once in a great while I bump up to a number 1.. I bought sample packs way back in 2006-7.. still have all the larger sizes.. learned real quick that I do not like the rough cut of the larger sized spirals.. For me.. the 2/0 FD New Spiral is way less aggressive than the Ultra Reverse blade would be.. I actually try to stay away from a reverse tooth blade on any real fragile works.. especially the UR with the reverse tooth all the way up the blade.. those reverse teeth like to grab the edges of the wood.. can be like cutting with the blade upside down.. Now.. I do use them a lot.. even on fragile works as you say.. but for someone new to thin stock and fragile cutting.. I wouldn't think that would be a very good choice.. For the record.. I've also used the Pegas spirals.. They cut good.. but for me on the Hawks.. I tend to break them a lot.. they run a bit smaller in size..so a 2/0 is more like a 3/0 in a FD brand.. and I've only bought a sample pack of the Pegas to try.. I may switch when I need to order again.. but I really don't use them often and have nearly a gross of the FD-NS on hand so.. probably 5 years or more, LOL They do great in my EX-21.. but just break a lot of them with the Hawk..
