Eagle Head
amazingkevin and 3 others reacted to Goat for a topic
Eagle head pattern by Grandpa from this forum. Thanks again for this awesome pattern. Edge glued aspen for the eagle (1/2") and backer (3/4"), pine for the frame. Satin poly finish. Its designed thick so it can stand on edge. Started with spirals, but had to switch as it was breaking some of the finer areas.4 points -

Pattern by Steve Good. Used 1/4" BB for birds and backer. Went back and used a spiral for the veins as they were kinda hard to see. Doing so the spiral was pretty brutal on the edges so I had to widen a few areas to hide the chips.3 points -

If folks want I can start a different thread about this. I know the talk of lasers was deadly not so long ago. But here is the thing, some of us bought expensive custom irons or wood burning sets to brand our logo or name on things we sell. The irons are consistent but custom engraving with a wood burner takes some real skill. Iggy is doing some beautiful work and personalizing it. With a laser engraver you can use any font and scale that you want. All of the information bellow is things that I have found in my digging. I should have done this before buying the laser that I have. I am no expert by any means, but I did use an industrial laser for many years to precisely cut Silicone wafers into custom shapes. First all of these smaller laser power ratings are misleading. the 3.5 , 7, 20 watt are in reality the power consumed by the entire unit, NOT the power of the laser. The actual power of a 7w (7000mw) laser is only 2.5watts. the 20w laser is only 5.5w. Most of these NEJE lasers with their controller and software only turn the laser on and off, If you want o burn gray scale images you want a laser with Puls width modulation. In english that means it has to capability to vary the laser intensity as it goes along. LaserGrbl is a control software http://lasergrbl.com/ that will do this as long as the laser is compatible. As far as cutting goes, these lasers have a very narrow focal point so these small lasers even the 5.5W (advertised as 20) will only cut "The 5.6 watt laser easily cuts plywood and acrylic 3-5 mm (0,1-0,2″) thick, and it even cuts plywood 8 mm (1/3″) thick with many passes (requires Z axes for that)." The "z" axis will move the laser up and down to maintain the focus. The cheaper laser have to be focused manually. If you want to primarily cut you will need a more powerful laser, that will require, water cooling etc.2 points

Hey Ralph, I'll just be around home during that time, a good ways south of you unfortunately. I used to vacation in Atlantic Beach a lifetime ago. I hear my ex-wife lives there. If you bump into her... run away.2 points

Ray you will find that home that is HOA free. So you won’t have to deal with a Cynthia telling you the your mailbox is 2” too tall as they cut it off with a chainsaw.2 points -
The one with pegs you see above is the first request for pegs. Every customer the past 3 weeks that I've taken an order for, I show them the hooks and the pegs... So far it's about 15 for hooks and 1 for pegs. At this point I hope to use the 600 pegs I bought before I die of old age.2 points

The Greatest Of These

Word-within-word pattern. Instead of cutting it with straight edges, I thought I'd try something a bit different. I think I like it this way over straight edges. 1"x8" whiteboard, stained Minwax Honey. Used Pegas #3MG blades. There are some fragile bridges in some of the inner letters, but I found that, since they are pretty much cut out in one section anyway, the rest of the scrap gave the bridges enough strength that they weren't any problem. I left the scrap in place when sanding the few burrs off the back of the piece, for the same reason.1 point -

Don from Brooklyn in Ontario provided me with this pattern. What I love about his patterns is the thin red outline with a light green fill. Makes cutting a real pleasure. The plaque is 14" X 5" X 1/2" oak. #1 PMG with 50/50 BLO. I nearly screwed up the edges on the router. My router is just a 1/4" trim router on a very makeshift table. The vertical adjustment is very crude and it was set too deep causing the router to bog down. I should have made a couple of shallow cuts then a finish cut. Worked out eventually. Still needs a backer and a couple of coats of poly semi gloss to finish.1 point -
I met another Scoll saw Village member

As some of you know, I have personally met several of the scroll saw family members. As a result, I have some new friends that I contact whenever I have the opportunity to do so. I have been able to go to Paul's (scrappile) house several times and we have become great friends and talk often on the phone. The first person I met from here was Travis, our chief cook and bottle washer. You know, the person that does all the hard work to keep us up and running smoothly. We had lunch together, a couple of years ago. And Ralph who lives in Aloha, Oregon. We too have met and chatted a couple of times. Anyway yesterday I had the opportunity to drive 45 minutes and meet yet another rather new and very talented member. He is not only very talented but he was very enjoyable to talk with. His name is Bill and he goes by 'cashew', here. Usually after I have visited with one of our members, people ask, "where are the photos ?". So this time I took a photo of both of us to show you. I am the ugly one on the left side in the photo. If you have never met any of the members here, I would suggest that you take the time to do so. An hour drive is worth your time. Well, it arrived today and I couldn't be more pleased. It runs as smooth as silk. I've cleaned the table and waxed it and dusted it off. Tony says I've been such a giddy kipper all morning that he'll be glad when I go in my shop and give him some peace . Excuse the background noise, Tony was tinkering 20200625_172033[1].mp41 point

Geez Guys, those property rental prices for mobile homes is ridiculous, we only pay $380.00 per month. For $13,000. annually, we could pay the mortgage payment on a nice home. Len1 point

I can see where you would like to put them back to back. I think that would look awesome. Seems like one alone needs something on the back. I don't know if I could do two. One would be tuff enough, let alone doing two. Good luck.1 point

One of my clocks
John B reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
a very impressive clock. They are a challenge and always draw a lot of comments. I tried a wooden gear clock when i first started scrolling but I could never get it to run. With these clocks one does not have to worry about that. Thank you Clive for posting it. I was really anxious to see what you did when you mentioned you loved doing clocks. They go from quite detailed to a rather simple piece so I can see you do not go for the simple ones. Dick heppnerguy1 point -

i dont change blades for vein cuts. what i do do,though, is drill the entrance hole along the vein instead of at the end. i feather the edges of the vein at the entrance hole to make it disappear. widens the vein a bit there but i think its looks better than seeing a small hole at the end of a vein.1 point

Ray, living in NY, I am curious what the average taxes are where you live now in CA and where you plan to go in TN. We have some friends that just had a house built near Asheville NC. Your idea of investigating different areas in your motor home is brilliant! most people go somewhere on vacation for a week or two, fall in love buy house ,move , and then find it is not as great as they thought it was. Good luck in your search. I did live in Merced CA for a few years. I live in an incorporated village so it has its own taxes. My wife and I love being near the water (3/4 mile from the bay and 2 miles by boat to the Ocean) I rented down the street from my current home for 16 years. always wanted the house that we now own. I swore I would never go back to Long Island after 11 years in the AF, I will be here for the duration, everywhere that I lived around the country had some thing special to offer, but this is home. Our combined county and village taxes are less than 1K a month. We could not rent an apartment for that. Just as an eye opener A magnificent house on the bay just south of us has county taxes of 56K a year plus village tax which ads at least another 2K.1 point

Hey Todd. You say you finished with Watco Danish oil, but that is not a finish. What it does is it brings out the natural beauty of the wood, bit that is not a finish. You need to apply a topcoat. The topcoat will protect and seal the wood. By using a water based stain you did not need to use the Danish oil. I use a rattle can semi gloss lacquer. Poly will work as well as Shellac.1 point

We bought a motor home to use in our search. We will go back there in it and spend a couple of months looking at areas. Once we determine where we want to live, we will come back here and sell our home. Once it is sold, we will pack, ship and store everything back there. Then we go back for good in the motor home and find/buy a home. We can live in the motor home until everything is done. Once we buy a place, we'll immediately start saving about $15k a year because we won't be paying rent. We can buy back there for less than what our mobile home is worth. And property taxes are about the same outside city limits. I've done some homework but still have some to do. Thanks for your wishes.1 point

When making frames accuracy counts. This applies to the angle and the lengths. Wood glue is not designed to fill gaps so the tighter the corners the better. I stack cut my pieces on the miter saw so they are exactly the same size. For clamping I use a Merel clamp. I also use "V" nails in addition to the wood glue. The beauty of using both "V" nail and glue is I can make multiple frames quickly. The process is: 1. cut the pieces 2. apply glue 3. clamp 4. drive in the "V" nails (two per corner) 5. immediately after driving the "V" nails remove from clamp and go on to the next frame.1 point -

I always ask a scroller I meet, like at the wood store for example, if they are members of any scroll page and tell them to look into Scrollsaw Village. You never know what might come of giving the invitation to others Dick heppnerguy1 point -
It would be nice to know another scroller to share a hobby with. Overall, there does not seem to be many scrollers as opposed to other hobbies. While I was a model railroader for more than 40 years I met literally hundreds of fellow modelers.1 point

I had a similar issue, years ago, with a DeWalt. In my case ,while cutting 3/4" wood I was pushing too hard and streching the blade. I learned to slow down my feed rate a lot.1 point
