Our 54th Wedding Anniversay
Loskoppie and 6 others reacted to Frank Pellow for a topic
We were married on July 2nd in 1966. Steve Good has an anniversary pattern for most years and I made use of it last weekend. The foreground is made of 6mm thick Figured Maple and the background of 18mm thick Baltic Birch plywood treated with Raspberry Saman stain. I took a photo of it on one of our kitchen widow-sills sitting beside a Valentine gift that I made earlier this year.7 points -

I made an urn for a very good friend of mine and his wife had a friend in to visit and she saw the urn and she asked me to make 2 one for herself and one for her husband. Told her that I don’t like to make the same thing twice, so her main request was she like something simple made of dark wood. I used walnut and mahogany, will deliver tomorrow, hope that she will be please with the end result.5 points -

Jewelry Box -Inspired
amazingkevin and 3 others reacted to don in brooklin on for a topic
A couple of weeks ago Ron Johnson posted his Scrollsawn Jewelry Box. That inspired me to drag out the book that I have had for over 5 years and search for the pattern. This is a practice piece for making Christmas gifts for my Grand daughters with some more exotic wood. This was made with poplar and stained. With Ron's help I changed the procedure so there are no cuts that had to be glued back together. Made a few mistakes along the way but will know better next time. Fun project and thank you Ron for the inspiration.4 points -

I got it from pinterest, adjusted it a bit, en looked for a wallpaper on internet. i then used a battery operated ledstrip. the square frames are two picture frames glued together. the round ones are stack cut. the patterns (on pinterest or Google) are silhouette, so just type in: cat silhouette for example and you get loads. hope this helps a bit.3 points -

Newbie Tips - Scroll Saw Challenge

To just walk away from the saw when things aren't going well. I was so stubborn during my first few projects and if I started drifting off the lines I'd just get angry and it'd get worse from there. I'd push my way through to the end and the project looked terrible. My old next door neighbor backed this up and told me that some days you should just work on a different tool if the scroll saw isn't working out.2 points -
I recently did this pattern (and I think yours is better) for a gentlemen who flew P-51's in both World War Two and Korea. I did put the tail codes and serial number of the one he was shot down in. It turns out that 60 years later, he found out he downed a ME-262. By far the funnest project I have cut to date. Now if I can only find an F-16 pattern that is deserving to be cut. That is my pride and joy.2 points

I ended up putting a couple drops of blue Locktight ( the cheep generic one) on it, worked it in a little, and out a prop on it (after I set the right spot) to dry overnight. I was VERY careful making a small adjustment...and so far it works great! I'm being extra cautious to not bump it! We'll see how long it lasts before I use a couple more drops.2 points -

I have never tried to cut Ebony, heard it is like cutting wrought iron only harder. I use purple heart occaisionaly and try to finish with a UV blocker Most out door finishes have a UV blocker.I have piece of Purple heart on the shelf for one of those get around to it projects, sat there for years it is protected fom light so color hasn't changed.2 points -

I think this might work to move that sawdust.. You would need a hard hat and epoxy glue the hose onto the hat so when you look down it blows the dust off the line.. https://www.amazon.com/Husqvarna-570BTS-powerful-X-Torq-Backpack/dp/B008JL05I4?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_122 points

I've been using Dewalts type 1 for close to 15 years and wanted to upgrade to a smoother saw with a larger table. I debated the Pegas or the Excelsior ex-30 but after discussing this with Ray from Seyco, he convinced me to wait for a Seyco. I have to say that this is a solid saw and the table is enormous. I know I will enjoie this saw for years to come. I'm not getting rid of my Dewalts as I do demos quite often and it is the perfect size to transport for demos. Christian1 point

Sawdust Static?
amazingkevin reacted to Rockytime for a topic
Perhaps this only happens to me, but...I'm cutting 1/2" Cedar with #1 PMG blade. As I'm cutting fine sawdust piles up both behind the blade as well as in front of the blade which obscures the line I'm cutting. My dust collection is adequate. While it does not pick up the sawdust when the cut is completed it often sucks up the piece that was cut out. The DC orifice is 1/2" tubing. I've tried a Lock-Line nozzle which does not work as well I'm assuming it is static holding the sawdust in place. I tried wiping the pattern down with fabric anti-static sheets. Dumb, but it did not help. I just finished cutting 1/2" Oak with #3 PMG blade. No problem. So...just wondering, could it be the Cedar and small blade causing the condition. I don't call it a problem. When it occurs I just lift my foot off the foot switch, brush off the dust with an acid brush and continue. I would not post something so trite or weird but things are awfully slow in the Village this summer.1 point -

I've got some wood from a company that refurbishes vans. It's the stuff they rip out and throw away. It's not the holy grail of Birch Ply, but I'm quite pleased with the results anyway. Good enough to oil and put a backer on I think. It's just laid on my kitchen table at the minute. An H.Botas Pattern.1 point -

Tomanydogs reacted to Fish for a topic
I haven’t done much lately but I cut this last week. I had an interesting piece of walnut my brother gave me. The grain might take to much away from the tree itself though. I used a #7 skip tooth, it’s pretty thick. About 1 1/8”. I’m not sure what I’ll do with it probably hang it in the garage. The store I was selling stuff at, Art Z Studio had to close so I have nowhere else to take it. Its about 11” I did the pattern frame a stencil.1 point -
I took your advice and dipped a sanded ebony and zebra wood piece in the 50/50 mixture, completely darkened it out. This picture is after about 3 hours of drying. I placed another offending "color changing piece" behind the treated one to illustrate how drastic of a change it was. Once it has fully dried I'll apply a spray coat of Miniwax semi-gloss. Thanks again!1 point

Another Airplane
amazingkevin reacted to RabidAlien for a topic
That dude is awesome!!! Allies learned REALLY quickly that they had nothing that could compete with the 262 in the air, but that the 262 had a VERY limited amount of air-time due to fuel consumption of the early jet engines. So they'd get word the 262's were up, and go loiter around their airfields and pick them off when they were flying slow, flat, and level on approach to land, without the 262's speed advantage and no altitude/time/fuel to regain the difference. As Patton said: if you ever find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck. Sorry...I tend to geek out with WW2 history.1 point -

Good all-round aircraft! The P47 was more geared towards ground attack (and could soak up an INCREDIBLE amount of damage), the P38 will always be my favorite.....but they all looked like they were standing still up against the Me262. Nicely cut!1 point -

The Greatest Of These
Tomanydogs reacted to RabidAlien for a topic
Word-within-word pattern. Instead of cutting it with straight edges, I thought I'd try something a bit different. I think I like it this way over straight edges. 1"x8" whiteboard, stained Minwax Honey. Used Pegas #3MG blades. There are some fragile bridges in some of the inner letters, but I found that, since they are pretty much cut out in one section anyway, the rest of the scrap gave the bridges enough strength that they weren't any problem. I left the scrap in place when sanding the few burrs off the back of the piece, for the same reason.1 point -

Yes they do.. I think they base the numbers on the model of saw.. I sort of wonder what kind of order they do those in.. I have the old round barrel clamp style saw with quite a high number.. and I've seen some not too far off from the number mine is that are Ultras.. My saw is a 1993 220VS but just a few numbers more they turn into Ultras.. The oldest Ultra I've seen so far is a 1996 My 226 Ultra is a 1998 the sales receipt that was in the box when i got the saw shows it was purchased in Dec. of 1998 I bought it for $400 still in the box unassembled in 2016-17ish.. I gave $100 for my old 220VS but it needed some parts.. I put another $150 or so into it as it needed a new tension cam.. I upgraded to the new style.. then bought a upgraded flex air hose and some new barrel clamps .. great saw now.. Put a lot of hours on it.. and just replaced the bearings in the pitman arm the other day.. They've sure paid for themselves..1 point

No it's the square style blade holders. All size blades from #2 To 12 I emailed Bushton with the serial number and they got right back to me. It was made in 1999 so it was older than I thought. I don't think it has had much use though.1 point -
