Hey everybody. I haven't been in the shop much the last couple of months. I started metal detecting and I'm a little addicted. A friend who has bought a couple of things from me sent a FB message saying her son just got married and is away in the military. He and his wife love the outdoors and their 2 dogs, a lab and a husky. Anyway she said if I ever did anything with a couple and two dogs she wants to buy it. Put this together using clip art, I can't draw. Found out they honeymooned at the ocean. The piece of Walnut had 2 knots which I didn't like because I wanted the bigger knot to be the sun. The smaller one had an x shaped crack in it so I turned it into an eagle. Since her son is serving us it'll be free of course. Hope everyone's doing well.6 points

Hi everyone, hope you are all doing well and staying safe. I wanted to share my latest scroll saw project, Kris, from the Scroll Saw Village, allowed me to use his pattern that I cut as a gift for a 10 year old baseball fan. Conner was aware of Babe Ruth, but had no idea of who Lou Gerhrig was, his mom told me that he went on the internet after we left and he did a bunch of research on Lou, who is now on his list of baseball heroes. I added the iconic Yankee Stadium Frieze, which I think is historically correct to the time frame that they played in the old stadium. Ann Marie cut out the names and the patriotic baseball images on her Circuit vinyl cutter and we attached them onto the homemade frame to finish the job.If you're under 75 yers old, you may not know who these guys are. Thanks for looking.Rick6 points -
Jewelry Box -Inspired

A couple of weeks ago Ron Johnson posted his Scrollsawn Jewelry Box. That inspired me to drag out the book that I have had for over 5 years and search for the pattern. This is a practice piece for making Christmas gifts for my Grand daughters with some more exotic wood. This was made with poplar and stained. With Ron's help I changed the procedure so there are no cuts that had to be glued back together. Made a few mistakes along the way but will know better next time. Fun project and thank you Ron for the inspiration.2 points -

I don't have a newer Hawk to compare it to, However, I do have a newer Excalibur. When I bought the Excalibur about 7/8 years ago I didn't think RBI was still in business. Honestly, I prefer my old Hawk to the Excalibur. Probably because I have had it for 27 years and have never had to do one thing to it. I'm just used to it and it's like an old friend. It still powers through hardwood with my #5 or 7 PGT blades. I do about 75% Intarsia now and use a lot of different tropical hardwoods. When I go lower than the #5 blade I use the Excalibur for the smaller Intarsia pieces. Like eyes etc.2 points

Open excel or any spreadsheet program you have. Insert pic. Now you can size it to whatever size you like with the little grabby things and it will print across multiple pages. If it is a pdf, you can change it to a jpg online or just take a pic with your phone and email it to yourself.2 points -
Rapid resizer, it will then break up the pattern into several 8.5 x 11 sheets that you can then stitch together.2 points

I use Kinko's. They're part of FedEx now. I had a file enlarged 800% there recently, my paper output was 46" x 46". The resolution wasn't perfect but as a pattern it worked for me.2 points

The UPS Store is my go to place for enlargements. I take them a USB drive with the pattern and typically get a 16 x 14 enlargement on card stock. I'll get 3 for less than $1.50!2 points

Was going to suggest the program Rapid Resizer, but then I re-read your question and it sounds like you are talking about a pattern in paper format and not a digital one Do you have a copy shop where you are?2 points

The UPS Store has the ability to enlarge patterns. An engineering firm can also do it UPS would be the cheapest. For the size that you have your local Library may be able to do it for you.2 points -

Thanks for the discussion.Cedar does look , cuts nice and has an appealing aroma. For me it also gives me water blisters mostly on my face. An Occupational Hygienist told me years ago I had a sensitivity to the oils in the wood. These oils are not good for the lungs, enter your system through the eyes and sometimes through the skin.2 points -
I was in the same boat for many years. I collected heaps of stuff including a jogging machine, thinking it would all make a great sander and it probably would have, but when one came on special for about $450, I thought "Bugger it" and dropped the cash.2 points

No worries as I do too. The one thing the allies we not aware of is the 262 would fly past the bombers fast, so they did a porpoise maneuver so that they could get another bomber in the formation, as Walter Schuack was doing that, my man put his P-51 in a dive and intercepted, let a burst out and the left wing started smoking. He followed the 262 to the clouds and lost it. Turns out, the left wing disintegrated.2 points -

I always apply clear packing tape on top of the pattern. The trick is to burnish the tape down with a block of wood so the tape is perfectly adhered to the pattern. If you do this, dust can’t get under the tape.2 points
-
Interesting stuff here about Cedar. I just watched a video about how Cedar is a unique wood as dgman said in his post. What happened to you reminds me of the time I experimented with a design that I put clear packing tape over...thought it would help cool the blade, yeah just got dust stuck underneath and made it next to impossible to see the line haha.2 points

I've been using Dewalts type 1 for close to 15 years and wanted to upgrade to a smoother saw with a larger table. I debated the Pegas or the Excelsior ex-30 but after discussing this with Ray from Seyco, he convinced me to wait for a Seyco. I have to say that this is a solid saw and the table is enormous. I know I will enjoie this saw for years to come. I'm not getting rid of my Dewalts as I do demos quite often and it is the perfect size to transport for demos. Christian1 point

I also have a Excalibur.. and also prefer to run the Hawk's over the Excalibur.. But I do use the Excalibur for certain projects and it also cuts slightly more aggressive or faster.. so on orders that I'm rushed on.. then many times I use the Excalibur to knock them out.. Mostly during the holiday sales rush.. After about 400 hours on the EX- it's time for new bearings etc... I put about that many on the old Hawk before I realized you're supposed to put a drop of oil on the pivot points and that back wedge, LOL.. still not really any wear on the thing,1 point

I've got some wood from a company that refurbishes vans. It's the stuff they rip out and throw away. It's not the holy grail of Birch Ply, but I'm quite pleased with the results anyway. Good enough to oil and put a backer on I think. It's just laid on my kitchen table at the minute. An H.Botas Pattern.1 point -
I love it. I like things that let your minds eye fill in the blanks. Don't know what size it is but this horse hide would make a cool backer. https://www.amazon.com/Leather-Weight-Tooling-Genuine-Supplies/dp/B087BNX1R6/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?crid=SHWI8BURUESR&dchild=1&keywords=horsehide+leather&qid=1593696670&sprefix=horsehide+%2Caps%2C223&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExMllKVTVPWE9HS0dVJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMDU4NzAxUDBERkdWTTkyWjdBJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA1NTQ1NzFNUVE3MDZCUEM3Vzcmd2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGYmYWN0aW9uPWNsaWNrUmVkaXJlY3QmZG9Ob3RMb2dDbGljaz10cnVl1 point

Dave, that's gorgeous! That's one of those things that will be around in 2220 if the world lasts that long. Can I ask, did you just change the order of the pieces on the drawers? I'm gonna have to try this. As for the drawers not fitting tightly, it's sure not noticeable. As everybody says we're our own worst critics. The routing worked perfectly. Reminds me of a favorite quote. "If you can't hide it, advertise it."1 point

A band saw is on my wish list. Hopefully I will own one soon. Cut all of it on my scroll saw and sanded with my drum sander. The drawers didn't fit as tight as I would have liked but I was able to cover it up by rounding the edges over.1 point -

Les, most cedar is not kiln dried. It also contains a lot of oil. So you get a moist, oily powder rather than dry dust. It’s probably not dry enough for your dust collection to pick up. Like trackman above, I have my blower pointed at my dust collection port. I don’t have a remedy for you, just wanted you to know what your problem was.1 point
-
No backer, BB covered with Duck brand shelf paper, pattern sprayed with 3M 77, pattern attached to shelf liner a d burnished for good adhesion. No packing tape. The wood is Cedar but it occasionally happens on other woods. I'm thinking it happens when I use very fine blades and the sawdust can't escape easily.1 point

yes its one of those, i dont remember the brand name of it but i figured for 12 dollars it was worth the risk and i sure do hope it works like they say it will and that it is sturdly made and wont break.1 point -
That's a good question from Rolf.. because I really get this when I put packing tape on top of the pattern.. however it isn't piled on the top, it gets piled between the tape and the pattern.. why I do not cover my patterns with anything unless it's a necessity..1 point
-
It cuts easy.. just the sawdust is like sticky or something.. maybe sap from the tree? Not sure.. it does smell good to cut for a short while.. but after cutting several hours it gets a bit strong for me anyway..1 point
-
I agree Kevin. However, keeping in mind how fragile it is I love it for certain projects and it cuts beautifully. Smells good too.1 point

Sawdust Static?
amazingkevin reacted to kmmcrafts for a topic
I quit cutting cedar shortly after starting.. there was two reasons.. and this was one of them.. The other reason was it was quite fragile.. not much strength to it after cutting out all the inside cuts.. I made ornaments with it thinking they'd be pretty out of the reddish color plus many people like the smell of it.. But for me they broke very easily.. the sawdust around the blade as you are experiencing.. also to me the smell was quite strong and irritating.. But I'll admit I cut it back when I was first learning scroll work back in 2005 ish.. never cut it again, LOL1 point
