Combination Project - Intarsia, Frame, Wood burning
Woodrush and 5 others reacted to jvbscroller for a topic
This project combined four steps. If you would like more information about any of these steps, let me know. 1. Make an octagonal frame and background. 2. Prepare a pattern for an eagle. 3. Make a wooden eagle to fit the octagonal frame. Dimensions of this eagle: 8.5" wide, 3.75" high. 4. Wood burn a verse onto the background. Glue eagle and frame to the background. I also added a sawtooth hanger to the back of the frame.6 points -

Well, I've had my new saw now for two weeks and I've used it every day almost. What I'm quite childishly happy with is that the 'insert' is still like new !!! That means that all the lessons about 'offering the wood to the blade' - 'let the blade cut the wood' - 'don't push' - 'relax and breathe', that all you good people have given me since I joined almost 2yrs ago must have actually sunk in !!! Just wanted to say a Huge Thank You to all of you.4 points

I cut these recently on my Pegas saw. They are an Alex Fox design, the first of his I have cut. The top 2 layers are 1/4 bb ply but I cut the base layer from 1/2 poplar to add some stability and a thicker backing for hangers. The art work was meticulously hand painted by my wife and daughter. I stack cut four each of the top two layers which worked out nicely. Enjoy.4 points

My Joint Box tool was bored
amazingkevin and 2 others reacted to munzieb for a topic
My creative juices were running dry and my wife asked about me making another joint box box she could paint a still life. I had plenty of 1/4" poplar so the sawdust started flying. Once my I-Box tool was set up, I was was done with the cutting in a few minutes. I added a tray too. Painting came out great!3 points -

A couple of projects
OzarkSawdust and one other reacted to RabidAlien for a topic
Horses are an H. Botas pattern that was posted on his Facebook page. Backer is, of course, reclaimed pallet wood (sawzaw with a metal-cutting blade, then a Phillips screwdriver and hammer to pop the nail heads out, sand the whole thing with 80-grit to clean off the grunge and...stuff, then a couple of pieces across the back to hold them together). Backer is stained Minwax Honey, horses are Weathered Oak. I did put a second coat on the middle slat of the left-hand backer, it seemed kinda light to me, and the horse kinda disappears into it. After the second coat, it looks MUCH better, greater contrast. The planes...well, I'm a military history geek, so when I saw this pattern pop up in one of Steve Good's newsletters, I had to do it. Stains (all Minwax) are "Honey", "cherry red", "grey", and "classic navy". Back piece has a light coat of rattlecan matte white.2 points -

I get all of my sanding supplies from Klingspore. Now that I am using a Festool RO, their disks are insane and have a different hole pattern. I have been very pleased with Klingspore disks that fit the Festool for a reasonable price.2 points

I have been using Diablo and am very happy with it. I have read or seen a video about a product called Abrenet (?) . It's more of a mesh sanding disc instead of the paper backed stuff. I believe it is hook and loop also. Wish I could remember more about it.2 points -

Kevin Took a while for me to find the link I was referring to. I was also wrong on the name I remembered ( guess that is part of getting old ) . Here is the link for the website. woodturnerswonders.com - Wonder Weave This was from a video Stumpy Nubs did a while ago.1 point -
So first thing I'd try is ruling out the foot switch.. though by the sounds of it it's the VS controller.. I'm assuming by the serial number that it's a newer saw than my 1998 226VS Ultra as my serial number is 10290.. I have not had any of these issues with my 226 but when I first got my old 220VS it would do the surge type thing IF messing with the dial while running the saw.. but not otherwise.. I took the thing apart and blew it out with the air compressor and it's not had any issues since then.. Thankfully since that is a problem those old saws with the Fasco (SP) motor had before the motor or controller box went out.. Hawks fix for those is a new motor and controller assembly.. On my 226 Ultra.. I did replace the Pot meter ( VS controller ).. not because it was bad... but because I broke it trying to take the knob off it to work on something else.. I now know the knob is not just pressed on... it has a very small screw that holds it on.. Be aware of that if you try taking it apart to blow it out or something.. LOL The fix from Hawk for this was also a new motor and controller assembly at $350.. I found out I could just buy a new pot meter and could solder the new one in place.. the meter was only about $6 free shipping from eBay.. If you find it's not the foot switch and find it's this part.. and can solder.. it's a cheap easy fix.. If you solder the leads on backwards it just makes the switch work backwards... (ie what used to be high saw speed is now slow, LOL Don't ask how I know that but I did correct it..) Hopefully it's nothing to do with the motor itself.. I suspect it to be the pot meter. however I'm no electronic expert so I don't know.. If you cannot solder.. I'm sure there is some shop somewhere near you that would be able to make the repair.. EDIT TO ADD If you need to replace the pot meter.. I did a little digging to find the listing to the one I purchased.. maybe this will help you or someone along the way.. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Alpha-1k-ohm-Linear-Taper-Log-Pot-B1K-Solder-Lugs-Split-Shaft-Potentiometer-EW/111400183535?hash=item19eff7e6ef:g:hh0AAOxyXWdQ9FfY1 point

I have had my 226vs for 24 years. Never had that problem. Could be the variable speed controller is going bad. You could try calling Bushton and see what they say. They have been answering my emails within a day.1 point -

I use both kinds of diablo and like the paper backed as well. Kevin when you get sandpaper at Johnson's Workbench pickup Baltic Birch plywood and some hardwood. That way your 40 mile trip will be expensive but worthwhile.1 point -

They are for a couple of day care centers. The little people are going to paint them. I have no idea Brenda As far as I know you twist and flick your wrist to throw them, sorry that all I know. I stack cut 3 at a time. I did try 5 but the dust was too much. And yes I did wear a mask. Marg1 point

Yes they have a facility in Hickory NC in addition to several retail stores. It is also their US Headquarters. Actual many of their abrasives come from Germany.1 point -
I'm a Klingspor guy. Been using them for about 20 years or so. I just started using their soft circular pads with various grits for sanding and shaping my Intarsia. Very satisfied so far. They have many sanding accessories also. I do however find their web site hard to navigate. I believe Klingspor has a factory in Hickory, NC. Don't know what products are made there.1 point

Blade breaking
amazingkevin reacted to NC Scroller for a topic
Lots of factors so in order to help you we need to know more. Do they break immediately or after a period of time? What size and brand blade are you using and what kind and thickness is the wood? Is it breaking at the clamps or in the middle?1 point -

I am lucky. Klingspor has a couple locations in NC. The closest one is 5 minutes from my dentist office. I also belong to a couple wood working groups that use one of their locations for meetings and we do demos there from time to time. Well we did prior to Covid-19. I have tried many brands and I find the Klingspor paper, while more expensive, lasts a lot longer and is thus worth the upfront cost.1 point -
That's a lot of boomerangs, what are you planning to do with them? Made around 100 keyrings for a wedding a few years ago, was a simplish design but I was sick of cutting it by the end!1 point

What tips/tricks have you learned this year?
WayneMahler reacted to Woodmaster1 for a topic
I learned to buy tools without the wife finding out. I also learned don't make the first project so you won't have to make more. I built one farmhouse table for daughter in law which led to a second one for my daughter this will be my final one.( haha )1 point
