Desk name plate
frankorona and 4 others reacted to Jim McDonald for a topic
Our assistant pastor is leaving to become senior pastor at a church in Georgia, so I made this name plate for his new desk. This is 5/8" cherry that was milled from a much larger chunk given to me by a friend. He said it had been in his barn for 20+ years and I've had it probably 5 more years. From the size of the original piece and the backstory, I would estimate that tree probably started growing around the early 1900s. Got through it with no burning until I went to cut the base on the table saw. Got a slight burn on the trailing edge. Sanded out easy enough. Finish is Watco Gloss lacquer.5 points -

Well today I started taking the saw apart.. I did a short video of how loud the saw is before I do the rebuild.. I have taken a lot of pictures that I'll probably put up later.. I have it almost put back together.. I worked on this a good 6 hours or more.. and I'm still not done.. but real close to being done.. I'll say there is a big difference between the original EX parts and the China made stuff as far as tolerances.. I'll add more to this post later on to describe some of the issues I had and the tolerance things etc.. Meanwhile check out how sloppy and noisy this thing was in the video2 points

Yeah it's been a frustrating machine for me for sure.. from day one of opening the box and setting it up it was issues.. starting with the blade chucks.. The Pegas chuck upgrade made the saw usable, LOL So I bought new rocker assemblies as well.. and they came with the blade chucks.. and these was what the biggest difference between the China made saw and the original EX saw that I had... See next set of photos.. These pieces that screw into the arm tubing of the saw are different size.. The China made saw they used a smaller tubing than the original EX Here I'm trying to show a visual comparison of the size differences.. Also a few photos of where I measured them as well.. I ended up trying to grind enough of the bracket material away so they would fit into the tube of the arm.. Turns out.. once I get it to fit into the tube the mounting holes do not line up.. Note the photo above where I'm holding the two pieces.. one goes into the hole farther than the other.. so while I think the holes would have been lined up they didn't go into the tube far enough to put the screws back in.. and they was close enough that I wouldn't be able to re-drill and tap them either.. So thankfully the rocker assemblies was the same so I was able to swap the assemblies to the China made brakes and all worked out.. If not then I would have been stuck using the worn out bearings etc on the front part of the saw..2 points

Excalibur Rebuild
NC Scroller and one other reacted to kmmcrafts for a topic
Well I got it back up and running. Now I need to dial everything in and it should be ready to make sawdust. The job wasn’t too bad, I took it farther apart than I really needed to but I was also making other repairs than just the bearing assembly. I bought the whole assembly from Seyco. The pictures of the parts below. I’ll try to upload the instructions that came with the assembly since it’s just a few pages. I found them not very good because they was photo copy pages and the pictures was very poor. Since I can’t read words and the pictures was bad they might as well not sent them.2 points -

Great attention to detail. My eyes popped when I saw the front axle being assembled. Was waiting on some toothpick size king pins to be pressed into place.1 point -
Make sure that you start cutting in the center, & keep working your way to the outer edges. If you start on the outside (or even one side), you weaken the area supporting the center. jerry1 point

Stack cutting help

I have cut 1/8” stacked 3 pieces with no problem, maybe your blade is too aggressive, I would use a #3 or even a #1 blade. Hope this help1 point -
Thanks Ray. It is a HF bit so that is probably the answer.1 point

Router Burning
amazingkevin reacted to OCtoolguy for a topic
I've had that same problem. I attributed it to a couple of things. None of my router bits are what I would call top quality so probably not the sharpest. The other is my inexperience with using a router and probably either going too fast or too slow. But, I think in your case, you have a dull bit. Try taking a stone to it and see if you can put an edge on it. If we were a bit closer to each other, I'd let you borrow one of my bits to see if it made a difference.1 point -

Well good news. I sold my DeWalt 788 for $350. I was asking $400 but the guy that's buying it is coming over 100 miles away so I told him he could have it for $350. He got a good deal with the stand and all.1 point

I have one just like it and the book as well. I loaned mine to my brother in law because I didn't need it as much as I needed the space. Mine cost me $50 15 years ago. Nice find and great job on bringing it back to life.1 point
