    Police Officer

I'm not bragging about the project but rather about my 21 year old grandson. Out of 163 applicants to the police department there were five finalists and my grandson was the one they hired. He graduated from college with a football scholarship at the same time working for the campus police and security in a halfway house. I'm bustin' my buttons with pride! Pattern is by Sue Mey and top is metallic gold.

  5. I'm working on a Mick Jagger pattern by Steve Good. I'll work on the name tomorrow. It looks like it is raised and the cut outs are meant to look like shadows. I'll have to see if I have a drill bit small enough to make the blade holes! A spiral would be a one pass in that narrow spot...but I would wreck it for sure. I'm thinking maybe a Pegas #1, don't think a #3 would turn around. Has anyone done this one? If so what did you use on the name? I like it so far! Well, Here's the finished product.

    My Owl

Cut and framed a H. Botas Owl pattern that I've been wanting to do. It's a single 1/8" BB ply done with a Pegas #3 finished with spray Shellac. I think it would sell...may have to do more of them.

    First fret box

I spent some time this week cutting this fret box from the summer 2018 issue of SSW mag. Nice pattern although I was sweating a few bullets on some of the stems. Well either that our the fact that it is almost a 100 F outside with no cooling in my shop. Still trying to make a decision on how to finish it including using the marbling technique for the top they suggested in the article.

    Eagle

Fresh off the saw. Literally. Pattern and tape are still in place, outer edges need to be cut. Double-stacked this one, and good thing, there's so many delicate cuts that the bottom edge started to catch on the edge of my saw's table and delaminated in several spots (had to be careful, cuz this tended to send the sawblade shooting off in odd directions, and NEVER into waste wood). The top piece will be fine, the bottom may be really fancy firewood. Pattern by Grampa, available in the pattern library.

  13. This is a follow-up to "Daddy's Hand" I posted back in March. My wife felt it could use a meaningful verse, so here is the final product. I like how she took the picture against the light of the window. It seems to make the touching hands almost "electric".

    Water Works Too

Working on project and ran out of accelerator spray for the super glue. So put water in sprayer and used same way. Works the same just as fast setup time.

  17. Even us "veterans" of scrolling have bad weeks. I thought the beginners would appreciate knowing that. I had 2 pieces become trash this week... I was engraving the cat wall hook and I bumped the table and it threw everything off... TRASH #1. Then yesterday I was cutting a custom piece with the dog's name and after I finished and removed the pattern, a minor blemish on the wood that I would never have paid attention to while laying out the patterns, made it look like he had a black eye... TRASH #2. No way I could send that to the customer so I cut another one.

    Water Works Too

In my readings about Kodak's cynoacralate (sp) glues back in early 70s, they stated that it would perform faster in higher humidity areas. But, they also warned it was not a "void filler" type of glue and was only to be used on slick-to-slick surfaces for maximum adhesion. We used them to attach polyester backed film stocks to metal clips. (Stuff was over $30 per fluid ounce in 1974)

    Air Brush

I use one of these. It works great. I only spray shellac so I don't know how it works for other finishes, but shellac is soooooo easy to clean up that it's my go-to finish, most of the time.

    Bleaching Wood

I once tried "pickling" some wood. I'll have to look it up again, but in essence you paint the wood. It seemed to blend in to the wood; did not hide the wood grain.

  39. I'm having the problem with a John Wayne portrait I'm working on. I'll see if there are any areas I can stick a couple of brads in when I finish my coffee. If not I'll try that on the next one. I may also try the hot melt instead of blue tape on the next one. I've been doing hardwood or one off ply but want to start making copies of stuff to sell this winter. Making 3-4 at a time beats the heck out of making singles! That gets me to thinking...very dangerous...do any of you stack cut something like 1/8" or 1/4" hard Maple or Walnut? If so is there any difference in the procedure between that and 1/8" or 1/4" BB ply? Great ideas guys! Thanks!

    Stack cutting help

I cut 6 18 BB ply and make the d1inch larger than the finish part. I use my nail gun to hold them in place useindg 5/8 brad nails also in the middle in scrap pieces. cutting the middle first and the midle naileld down till last on large pieces. I have cut large shelves 11X15 " with no problem useing a #3 or #5 blade. IKE

    Stack cutting help

I often stack cut 4-5 layers of 1/8" thick ply. The larger the blanks, the better chance of there being some gaps between the layers, in the middle. Starting with good, flat stock is the first step. If there is any warping in the pieces, then do as NC Scroller does and arrange the layers to minimize gaps. You can arrange the outer layers, to form a concave bow such that when you clamp/tape/glue the outer edges, the center is forced together by flattening the bow. I use hot melt glue around the edges. I stack the pieces, holding them together with spring clamps, then run a bead of hot glue across the outer edges. I don't put anything between the layers. Driving a few brads (or pin nails) in the center waste areas will help. Make sure you file them flat on the bottom, to prevent scratching your table. I've stack cut my share of plywood and I've never had to do this, but it will work.

    Stack cutting help

All good suggestions. I stack 4-6 pieces of 1/8 BB all the time. I also use other woods to stack cut. To make my stacks I use hot glue on all four corners. Clamp the pieces with spring clamps while appling the glue. If I have pieces with a slight bow I flip the pieces around, one up and one down, to eliminate the bow the best I can.

    Stack cutting help

I use clear packing tape.. or masking tape.. I just tape around the edges.. I apply the shelf liner to the top piece then make the stack and tape the edges..

  45. When you use hot melt...do you put it all over...or around the edges? I thought about using some in the middle, but wouldn't it bust the tight stuff when you took it apart (I've never tried it) ? How do you separate it?

  46. Good point Jerry, I've never tried cutting it that way.

    Stack cutting help

Make sure that you start cutting in the center, & keep working your way to the outer edges. If you start on the outside (or even one side), you weaken the area supporting the center. jerry

    Stack cutting help

'When I stack cut I realize it will be slower than the same stuff individually. When I put the stack together I make certain there is no bow in the wood and sometimes sand a piece flat. I also use a handy handy quick clamp to hold the stack together when I apply hot melt of tape depenidng on how I feel at the time. I have stack cut a munch of woods of different thickness. By the way ply will dull the blades rapidly.

    Stack cutting help

I have cut 1/8” stacked 3 pieces with no problem, maybe your blade is too aggressive, I would use a #3 or even a #1 blade. Hope this help
