First fret box
Tomanydogs and 10 others reacted to Badgerboy for a topic
I spent some time this week cutting this fret box from the summer 2018 issue of SSW mag. Nice pattern although I was sweating a few bullets on some of the stems. Well either that our the fact that it is almost a 100 F outside with no cooling in my shop. Still trying to make a decision on how to finish it including using the marbling technique for the top they suggested in the article.11 points -

Working on Mick Jagger
Phantom Scroller and one other reacted to OzarkSawdust for a topic
I'm working on a Mick Jagger pattern by Steve Good. I'll work on the name tomorrow. It looks like it is raised and the cut outs are meant to look like shadows. I'll have to see if I have a drill bit small enough to make the blade holes! A spiral would be a one pass in that narrow spot...but I would wreck it for sure. I'm thinking maybe a Pegas #1, don't think a #3 would turn around. Has anyone done this one? If so what did you use on the name? I like it so far! Well, Here's the finished product.2 points -
use a funnel of course, best to go to the dollar store (or what you have that is the same concept), and get one funnel per flavor of oil, that will stop the cross contamination that will occur if you use one funnel for all different oils2 points

Hi everyone. Just want to let you know I won't be on for a few days. Going in for sinus surgery; Have to take it easy for about 7 days the doctor said. Haven't been in my workshop for over a month. Doing a lot of packing and will be moving to Florida.Hopefully by the end of the year.1 point

I'm not bragging about the project but rather about my 21 year old grandson. Out of 163 applicants to the police department there were five finalists and my grandson was the one they hired. He graduated from college with a football scholarship at the same time working for the campus police and security in a halfway house. I'm bustin' my buttons with pride! Pattern is by Sue Mey and top is metallic gold.1 point

I may try saving it to a screw top jar, I've got a few of them. Thanks for the idea. x1 point

What a great idea, I'm off to order some coffee filters. Thank you. x1 point

Thanks Steve, not sure what I did wrong the first time, although when I come to think of it, I may have left it overnight before I returned it to the can but don't quote me on that, I can remember what I did when I was 21 but can't remember what I had for my tea yesterday.1 point

Question about 'oiling' a piece.
OCtoolguy reacted to loftyhermes for a topic
Brenda, I always dip and return what's left to the tin, never had a problem with it going off prematurely even after months of not using it. What size tin are you using Brenda? I currently use Wilko's Danish Oil in 1litre tins at £11. Screwfix have half litre tins at £5.591 point -

Super cutting, Brenda. The expression is wonderful1 point -
I would not ever pour it back in the container it came from unless I had emptied the container. Most, if not all, of the finishes, I have used tell you not to do that in the instructions. I would save it to a separate container or throw it out.1 point

I had never thought about filtering the remains when I'm done.. I may try that as no matter how much of the sawdust etc I blow off the pieces with a air hose.. I still get fine dust in the oil, usually not noticed until my gallon is nearing the bottom of the can.. I think Brenda was saying that she was spilling it when trying to pour it back into the can and loosing a fair amount of the oil.. If that is the case there are a couple thing you might try.. you could get a oil change pan for changing a cars oil that has a pour spout? Or you could try using a dedicated funnel? Also have read over the years and actually did it myself a few years.. and that is to get a dedicated dipping container that has a sealed lid.. just pour into that and dip projects.. if it starts getting too much fine sawdust in it or gets contaminated toss it out and clean the container and start over with fresh oil.. Just be sure the container is chemical resistant and that it's not going to melt with the oil in it, LOL1 point

In my readings about Kodak's cynoacralate (sp) glues back in early 70s, they stated that it would perform faster in higher humidity areas. But, they also warned it was not a "void filler" type of glue and was only to be used on slick-to-slick surfaces for maximum adhesion. We used them to attach polyester backed film stocks to metal clips. (Stuff was over $30 per fluid ounce in 1974)1 point -
Congratulations to your grandson and prayers said for his health and safety through a long and outstanding career in front of him. Excellent work on the project, he will love it.1 point

Stack cutting help
OzarkSawdust reacted to OCtoolguy for a topic
I've stack cut 4 layers 1/4" oak and poplar with no problem. I think your biggest problem might be slightly warped wood leaving a gap in the middle. Try arranging your layers so they are as flat as possible.1 point -

I use one of these. It works great. I only spray shellac so I don't know how it works for other finishes, but shellac is soooooo easy to clean up that it's my go-to finish, most of the time.1 point -
The Opposite of Bragging...
barb.j.enders reacted to scrollerpete for a topic
Well I am surprised that a master has ooops. There is hope for us mere mortals.1 point -
I have never seen a hold down foot that does more than get in the way. If you have it so snug on the wood to keep the layers together it creates real drag and you risk breaking off the delicate bits on fretwork. The foot can help new scrollers until they get used to cutting as it helps with that terrifying moment when the wood starts hopping up and down scaring the stuff out of us, I love doing that at presentation, it really gets peoples attention. LOL. yes I can be mean.1 point
