    What hinges to use?

Russell, I have not used them on 1/4" 6mm but have on 3/8" 10mm. Not sure how small you can actually get those hinges.

    What hinges to use?

Watch out with the brass screws. They will snap off in an instant. I drill pilot holes and I screw in a steel screw of the same size, fully seating it to insure the hole can accept the brass hardware.

If you want to do an easy hinge, I use the LT277. It may not work on your type of box. https://craft-inc.com/collections/hinges?page=4

    What hinges to use?

I had to google it... and your favorite store has them.. looking at the pictures it looks to me like the outer art lines up with the hole in the hinge and then you get your hole perfectly centered into the hinge hole for the screws to go in and sink without getting them off centered etc.. I may be wrong on that.. https://www.harborfreight.com/hinge-drill-bit-set-3-pc-61550.html

    What hinges to use?

I have used small decorative brass hinges on boxes like that. You can get them at most of the box stores and hardware stores. They come with small nails to hold them on, which I don't like, so I got some 1/4" brass screws to use with them. With 1/4" wood, you may need to file or grind off the very tip so they don't go all the way through the wood. The screws will need predrilled holes to fit into, but they hold a lot better than nails. I use a hinge bit to drill the holes, which makes life a little easier. By the way, I like the box. You did a great job on it. Someone is going to be very happy. Tom

    Chick-nic Table

Ever since I saw the Meme about these I knew I needed to build one. (neighbors have chickens) Found a "new" pallet at my work that had only been used to bring in a large piece of equipment so was clean and fresh. And Voila! Chick-nic table!

    Parrot Wall Plaque

This is a 9"X15" wall plaque that I made from a ZM Creations Royalty Free Parrot Ilustration and not a scrollsaw specific pattern. The top layer is 5/32" Maple solid core plywood over a double layer of inexpensive 1/4" Luan backer. I took a few liberties with the cut out work and then painted the colors on the backer with acrilic craft paint following the colors of the ilustration. I muted the maple with a single coat of natural clear stain to embelish the grain pattern of the maple and finished the panel with about 7 or 8 coats of high gloss lacquer. I did light sanding using 1500 grit sanpaper between coats. I finished the piece by framing the plywood to hide the exposed edges with a an upside down corner molding painted, with a shaker can, gloss black. Using a wood burning tool I signd and dated the back side and then added picture hanger brackets. The quickest part of the project was the scrollsaw work. Waiting for stain, paint, laquer and glue to dry takes up a lot of time! . Patience is not my strong suit.

    What hinges to use?

I'm going to make some scroll saw keepsake boxes for Christmas presents this year. Looking for suggestions on the best type of hinges to use and where can I buy them?. I will make the boxes out of solid 1/4" red oak or maple. Maybe both. Below is one pattern I will use. There are others. Thanks

So I went to my shop and made this and posted it on FB in a "guess a # between 1 and 500" giveaway.Time much better spent and I'm smiling again. Y'all stay safe!

Hi Ben, can’t really help you on hinges and looks like you got lots of potential sources already. However, I did want to say what a beautiful box you have crafted. Should be loved by anyone who gets one. Second, I also wanted to ask if you could share information on where to find that pattern if you don’t mind. Love the butterflies.

    Hawk model 220VS

Mine is also a 1993... but it doesn't have the hollowed out arms.. and my serial number is quite a lot higher than the one shown in the ad for this one.. I have put a lot of hours on mine.. not sure why I felt I needed to buy two more newer Hawks.. I did have a surging motor when I first got mine and thought it was going bad.. took the switch box apart and blew the dust out of it and I've not had any issues since.. and like you say.. it just keeps going and going.. I do use mine at least a few times a week.. and was my main production saw for at least 1.5 years.. I wouldn't be scared to buy this one if the price was right.. I just said all the other things to point them out.. If one could get it at around half the asking price or close to that.. it's worth it provided the motor has no issues which is really the biggest downfall of these older saws.. Parts are still available.. I just feel a newer saw is a better choice for the price range of this one.

    Hawk model 220VS

Well I just bought a hawk 226vs, for 225$. After about many months of following these forums i thought i was going to buy a cheapo HF, Wen , something like that, but i paid a little more for some old iron. I hope it doesn't turn into a boat anchor. I have it in the garage right now , i just brought it home and cleaned it up some. It looks almost new, no dings ,scratches. It looks like it was not used much. The blade on it was bent, very very thin blade many teeth. So i have to get some more blades. I have been working wood now for 55 years, i think i worked myself up to a beginner. The saw will live in my basement where it is warm in winter and cool in summer. But i have to wait till my step son comes over to help me carry it down. Hope he brings is son who is part gorilla, what a guy. Pics will follow, my phone is charging. I will be calling on you guys for help. Thanks, Carl

    Excalibur 21

Another thing I should have mentioned... paint drying times.. A typical spray can of paint doesn't have any catylist / activator to speed up the "full" curing time.. so those paints typically take either 30, 60, or 90 days to fully cure.. While it dries to the touch and most cases is fine for painting certain things.. But i would think the paint would be way to soft to "try to scroll on it" until it has cured completely.. otherwise a good chance the paint will scratch off quite quickly.. A paint with a catylist would be much faster to cure more durable etc etc... But if you're just selling it... does that really matter? Maybe the magnetic sheet is a better way to go with it...or just leave it as is..

The easiest way to make a new table top is a magnetic sheet, I put them on my saw over a year ago and still looks new https://www.amazon.com/Magnum-Magnetics-Strong-Flexible-Material/dp/B00HPAB2DW/ref=asc_df_B00HPAB2DW/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312393068560&hvpos=1o5&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4315964365999646768&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9031544&hvtargid=pla-568877589769&psc=1

  22. You got something other then what you ordered. I guess by mistake. I have bought a lot of baltic birch in my life and never ran across that stuff. If it is working for you great. I guess is would not work well with a laser or for a wood burning project. BTW I checked the Paxton Website and all they list is regular uncoated plywood.

    Hawk model 220VS

It's an old saw.. Guessing 1990 -92 area.. Has the motor that has some problems.. Has the weaker hollowed out arms on it ( though I've never heard of issues with those arms they made a point about them being weak in on of their video ads about a newer saw with stronger arms )... This saw being older will have the round barrel style lower blade holders.. nothing wrong with them but many people either loved or hated them for some reason.. I have one of these saws.. and I have no issues with it over any of my newer saws with other styles of blade holders.... Make note that those blade holders cost about $20 each.. and while you really only need one.. but having more with preloaded blades is really nice... I know you mentioned you was thinking about making an offer.. I know people see a Hawk at a price of $250 - 600 and automatically think it's a deal because a new one is $1200 -1400.. But there is a lot of upgrades on the new saws. while they "look" the same to the average joe... they are far from it.. There is not really much to go wrong with these other than just normal wear.. and these old ones did have the motor problems.. which can cost $350 to repair.. That saw to me.. on a good day is probably a $300 saw if it was in like new condition.. and I'm talking like brand new condition.. Many other folks on the FB groups etc will say it's a steal at the $300 ish price... but they don't know the difference between these very old saws to the newer models that are almost always available in the same price range. So with all that said.. personally if you're stuck on wanting it.. $200 -250 is where I'd be offering at best.. maybe $300 or better if there is actually proof that it's never been used.. But there are way too many newer Ultra models out there with the good motors and better user friendly upgrades in the same price range..

    First pice

I agree with everyone else you did GREAT!!! now about patterns i agree with everyone else on that too. and another advantage with a printer you can print a lot of different things as well. I do have a suggestion for patterns...if you cant do any of the things already suggested you might try this..... Get some coloring books...there usuly not very expensive....then take some tracing paper and trace the picture. after that is done you can use spray adhesives to attatch the pattern to the wood, then take mailing tape and cover your traced picture with it. This helps keep the picture adheared to the wood and helps lubercate the blade....another way to get the picture onto the wood is to tape your traced pattern on to the wood at 3 sides. Then slide a piece of carbion paper between the traced picture and the wood... now go over the lines of the traced picture with something. When i first started scrolling i used a crochet hook to trace the lines..later i got a traceing tool i bought from the winterfield collection... you can pretty much make a pattern out of any line drawing that way. you can usuly figure out the inside cuts by looking at the whole picture...for instance a picture of a girl with her hands on her hips...you would cut out the center piece between the arm and the body... i hope that makes at least a little bit of sense. Here are some pictures of projects i made from line drawings..The shied with the red strip and dragon on it i made from a coloring book picture of a shild the dragon is a piece of scrap wood from a compound cut dragon. The pilgrams are from a picture i found in our local grocy stores add in the paper at thanksgiving time. the second shield is from a picture in an old D & D magizine you can see where i did the fret work on that one.the guy in the center of the shield is another wast piece from a compound cut. The last picture Sometimes the Dragon Wins is also a picture i traced from a cartoon pic in a D & D magazine. I traced each piece seperatly to make the overlay of the pattern. I used very small pieces of wood from different thickness to put under the over lays to give the picture some depth. Before glueing the overlays to the base i painted the background. then i made the frame to go around it. I made the sign at the bottom from another piece of scrap wood left over from a different project. well i know i didnt expline all that very well but hopefuly the pictures will help, and i didnt get to long winded

  26. I had some given to me one time by a friend. He called it "apple" ply. It was 1/2" thick and like yours it was slick on both sides. I used it on my table saw for fence sides.

  28. Born and raised on LINY and retired and relocated in 1996 to the Mountains of Western North Carolina and subsequently moved to Florida in 2014. In NC I had a 24'x 32' fully equiped wood workshop where I did alot of wood turning and flatwork projects. I had a scrollsaw in the shop but it did not see much uses as other woodworking projects kept me busy. When I moved to Florida losing the wood shop broke my heart. A few of the major shop tools I did take with me was a rdial arm saw, a sanding station, a router table and the scrollsaw. I moved into a small duplex with no garage so most of the tools had to go into a rented storage unit until recently. A few months ago I placed a concrete a slab and built (assembled) an 8' x 12' resin shed that I have made into my MINI woodshop. Cannot do any large projects but a small work bench, a fold up contractors table saw, my sanding station and the scrollsaw at least got me back being able to do some woodworking...now mainly scrollsaw projects. At least I'm making sawdust again! I'm also an advid motorcyclye rider so a few of my early projects relfected that subject. I also made a desk sign that reflects my look on life. Looking fowward to participating in this forum.

    First pice

This is my first pice. Made on a $25 Ryobi pin end. I learned a lot on it. When I look at all I see are my mistakes. I have a Cricut that I made the template on . Then traced it on the green tape, drilled holes and cut out. The finished picture is in bad lighting the stain is even. my questions are. 1. Are the pin end blades at the dutchman store better than Menards? 2. Puzzles look like some thing I would like. Where can I get full size patterns? I don’t have a printer. Thanks in advance for all of your comments.

    Shutter Project

I have cut a 32" door topper on a 21" saw. It was 3/4" cypress. For some areas I cut as far as I could then put the blade in backwards and continued the rest of the cut pulling the wood vs pushing. It takes a little practice. Using spiral blades will also help.

  36. This was my first attempt on using different stains on the same project. I didn’t tape off the different areas so stain ran, especially on the horse. So to try and help the project, I used water colors to try and cover up some of the issues. Then added more on the reflection to draw attention. Probably won’t try this again!

keep looking. deals are out there but you might have to drive a few hours to get one.several weeks ago i bought a bushton BM26 saw. not like new but pretty good shape for $400. i dont think it has had 20 hours of use. had to drive about 3 hours away to pick up, but was a good road trip with my son. change the location on the FB marketplace and search for hawk scroll saw, excalibur and hegners are great saws also.if you bring a small socket set with you the legs pop right off and the whole saw will fit in the trunk of a car.keep looking you will find a good saw. doug
