  2. So - I got me a scroll saw. But - being OCD - I got FOUR of 'em. An RBI HAWK, DREMEL, RIDGID and a Pegas. Then I set out to see what I could do. I Disc Golf, a bit, and we all compete for "BAG TAGS". They are about 3 1/2 to 4 inches in diameter - so - I knew I would have to get small. I looked at all of your pictures - watched hours and hours of videos. Read countless hours. Then - got to work on some stuff on the RBI. Sold the Dremel without even taking it out and powering it up. And the Ridgid just sits there collecting dust. So - RBI and Pegas seem to be my tools of choice. So - We have a little group of us that play together in the hills of Sonoma County, California. Very nice place. If you're over 60 - you're in the HOGS. "happy ole guys of sonoma". Most of us are pushing 70. And we have a few in the 40-60's playing with us. Got me some scrap wood. Wood Flooring left overs, book cases I could knock apart, bed headboards, things friends had hanging around that they couldn't fit in the garbage cans and didn't want to make a dump run with. Those things that they put around the good wood when transporting them to the lumber yards so the banding won't scar the good wood, it's either throw 'em away or give 'em to Gus. And I tried my hand at the scroll saw. Finally. I didn't like some of the patterns I saw - like YODA. So - after watching more and more hours of video - I attempted and came up with my version of Yoda, which I shared here. I'm working on Josey Wales now. That one's taking a long time. And made one of my Grandkids Daddy - looks just like him - using some of Steve Goods patterns for Fathers Day. Anyway .. here are a couple that I've made. That I like - and - I'm going to attempt a logo type of thing for a friend of mine that makes me some special lures that seem to catch fish all the time. Any fish, any where. Thanks for looking and .. any criticism is greatly appreciated ... oooo just got a text - someone has a SOLID CEDAR HEADBOARD they want to give to me. Okay .. Oh .. and the tags ? They sell for 20-40 bucks apiece. The one with the guy on it throwing a disc - looks just like Dave - that was 40 bucks. 4 inches out of scrap flooring.

  6. Ohhh Boy... I'm looking forward to this one.. Only thing is.. I need to pick one or maybe a few of my car projects since I have over 60 car clocks listed on various websites not to mention puzzles, portraits and ornaments.. I'm going to have to think about what ones have the best story to go along with them.. I guess since you said your first car was a 83 Camaro.. I'll start with one of those, LOL.. I'll think about something personal and post it along with a story behind it I suppose..

  7. I'm in the process of making some keepsake scroll saw boxes for Christmas presents and looking for some tips. I have one ready to go right now. It has a hummingbird scroll saw pattern that I will use. I want to set the pattern off with a nice background. I can make the boxes all right. Just looking for some tips on how to line them. I do have some flock. I also like the idea of putting a backing behind the scroll saw cut outs. I see mostly black used for this. My question is what do you use for this? I was thinking of cardstock. I just don't think lining the box with black cardboard would look nice. Then I thought is could line the box with the black cardboard then use some adhesive backed felt over the cardboard to dress it up. Would that work? A lot of extra work, but i do want the boxes to look nice. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance Ben This is the box I'm going to make for my grandkids. I also have a butterfly one. It has a purple background. I just need a little help on how to line it and show off the pattern.

    Clean workbench!

Not really bragging... but I did do what I've been putting off. Did you ever get to the place you can't find anything right on the bench? I was between projects this morning and told myself "you've got to do something with this mess"! So I cleaned up the workbench, and found a few things I thought I had lost! I'll post a picture...neat, clean, organized...it probably won't stay that way for long...LOL! Also I got tired of the tubes I have my blades in rolling around all the time. When I bump the saw table they will roll off onto the floor...and I have to stop and pick them up. So I dug around in Steve Good's site and found a "tube carrier" plan I had seen a while back. Didn't take long to cut out and glue up...presto, all my blades are organized and within reach!

  9. Finished organizing everything in the garage today and made the last trips of moving things. AC unit installed, water in fridge so time to start making sawdust. so back to what I love to do. Cut wood about my sweet chocolate love (chocolate lab) and let the AC flow. BTW, it is cut 1/4 walnut, dipped in Teak oil and finishing wax to top it off. Used a Flying Dutchman Ultra reverse #3.

  10. Like the others I never cut a single layer of 1/8. And certainly not with a #3 blade. You want as many TPI on the wood, no less than 3. Even if you use an Olson 2/0 R 28TPI there is a problem. The gap where the teeth change direction is almost 1/8. It will definitely tear out the wood. I have also gone to a 28 tpi blade with no reverse teeth, and deal with the fuzzies after with a Mac mop. If you want to cut only one at least put a backer of some crap plywood under it.

  11. While I have not made any of these boxes I have made numerous Sue Mey projects and I find her instructions pretty complete and straight forward. Were there no instructions included? You might also consider contacting her via here website. https://www.scrollsawartist.com/contact-me....html

  12. I seldom cut only a single piece of 1/8" (3mm) Baltic Birch but when I do I use a #1 or even a 2/0 reverse tooth blade. Unlike many others I slow the saw speed down again only when cutting a single piece. Don't fret (pun intended) about the back.

  13. Set the machine to high speed, and feed the wood slowly. I regularly cut 1/8 BB ply with pegas MG #3 and only occasionally see that happening. But like Les said, who looks at the back of the piece when you are done.

  14. I usually stack cut if doing 1/8 but some times you must do as single sheet if something like a personalized ornament. Couple of things I have done is given the sheet a coat of sanding sealer. (shellac/alcohol 50/50) and lightly sand. I also try and use a dull blade. Some one here suggested using your blade first on a few cuts of hard maple. Steve Good keeps a dull blade around just for this. See his blog http://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.com/2020_07_21_archive.html

  15. I haven’t looked at the pattern, but would it work if you used 1/8 inch bb to line the inside of the box. Paint the top what ever colour you want to have the hummingbirds show through and stain or paint or flock the inside?

  16. Not sure if this would make a difference, but I tape both sides of my board. But I also don’t use a straight blade.

  22. Exactly why I run my saw full speed when cutting BBply... I typically stack cut 4-6 pieces and this sometimes happens.. I find it ( for me ) seems to happen in thin spots where two cuts are real close to one another with just a thin like separating and sometimes I've attributed it to pushing a dull drill bit though the wood rather than letting the bit do the drilling, LOL Usually a new bit helps with some of it for me.. though on rare occasion it just happens..no matter what I do..

  23. I seen this cut before somewhere a while back & really loved it, so I had some time today to designed my own pattern this morning, I'm calling it "The tree Of Life Cross"..... I had this nice piece of red elm in the shop & thought it would look very nice with this cross, it's 10 x 12 , 5/8" red elm, 4 coats of Deft semi gloss polyurethane with 400 grit light sanding in between coats, chamfered edges. comments always are welcomed. God Bless & Thank You.

    Flower Bowl complete

Finished with Teak oil then satin poly -- will probably use beeswax later to polish. I left it a bit rough because it's getting really thin in spots (singing to me again). I even had to patch a sanding hole but I doubt you can even find it -- even in person it's hard to see.

  25. I agree with Dan on the dust. I would also think it would be an issue perhaps with card stock plus I would be fearful what moisture of any kind would do to the card stock. If I wanted a real pop of color like that purple, I would probably do what Sue suggested on her pattern. Another choice would be to use the alcohol inks or unicorn spit stain which will give you vibrant coloring but more of a stain then paint if it was the paint you didn’t like the idea of. Your other option, but more subtle on color, would be to use a wood that gives you the color contrast. I recently did a Steve Good pattern of a curved top box. I forgot what image he had on the box top, but I used a butterfly instead and then used a piece of Purple Heart to line the lid to fill in the butterfly with color and to be the lining for the lid.

    My first ever 3mm cut.

Never having had the pleasure of cutting 1/8th Baltic Birch before, I bought some and this is the first thing I've ever done with it.

  29. I think you may be right Kevin, when I look at it, it is where there is a 'thin' line separating and also I know that the drill bit I used wasn't the sharpest and I did 'push' a bit I would never have thought of that.

  32. I would think some heavier card stock wrapped in self adhesive felt should work. Just be careful gluing it on. I use E-3000 for this when I do it. Nice job on the one posted it really looks great.

  33. It does Wayne, thank you. I'll try the zero clearance tomorrow. I think the blades are Ultra reverse, but I'll check in the morning. I think I may try stack cutting too and see if that makes a difference.

  34. Hi Brenda Every once in a while I experience this same thing. I sort of attribute it to the lack of clue between the layers of veneer. Slowing you blade down is not the answer, I increase me blade speed. Theory being the slower the blade the longer the contact with the veneer giving it time to pull if it is loose. Using a zero clearance insert or covering helps as it supports the material over the hole. I use cheap playing cards with a little tape to hold them in place. Watch your feed rate too, give the blade a chance to do it work. I am a huge fan of Flying Dutchmen blades. I use a #3 UR which has every third tooth reversed. Hope some of this helps.

  35. I have never seen tear out like that Baltic Birch. I assume you are cutting single layer (not stacked). It looks like the teeth are are being super aggressive on the down stroke. Plus, IMHO, a #3 on single 1/8" is too big. Are blade reverse or ultra reverse?

  37. I want to thank everyone who tried a pattern for this one for me. Russell I went with yours and it was a huge hit. He loved it!! I cut two, one for an autograph and one for Mr Pace to keep. He was very surprised. There's video of him signing it on my facebook page if anyone wants to see that. Courtys Scrollworks But long story short I can't say thank you enough to the amazing pattern makers in this group! You've come through for me on more than one occasion and always have top notch designs! Thank you again!

    Baby's First

Got my first great-nephew this year, so I had to do something special for the little guy. @rdatelle helped me track down the pattern and I cut it without the year, but I will sign and date the back. Cut from 1/4" butternut with Watco gloss lacquer. Got the frame from Sloan's as they were going out of business. If I do more, I will strengthen the base of the "B" as it is quite weak.

    New cutting

I was so inspired with the shop being clean and organized that I cut a new piece this evening. On Steve Good's site he calls it a "Christmas Oval". I cut it, with #3 Pegas blade, from 1/4" Walnut ply with a 1/4" Maple ply backer. Finishing is Watco Light Walnut on the fretwork and Watco Natural on the backer. I may hit it with a couple coats of Lacquer tomorrow to help protect it.
