  1. So - I got me a scroll saw. But - being OCD - I got FOUR of 'em. An RBI HAWK, DREMEL, RIDGID and a Pegas. Then I set out to see what I could do. I Disc Golf, a bit, and we all compete for "BAG TAGS". They are about 3 1/2 to 4 inches in diameter - so - I knew I would have to get small. I looked at all of your pictures - watched hours and hours of videos. Read countless hours. Then - got to work on some stuff on the RBI. Sold the Dremel without even taking it out and powering it up. And the Ridgid just sits there collecting dust. So - RBI and Pegas seem to be my tools of choice. So - We have a little group of us that play together in the hills of Sonoma County, California. Very nice place. If you're over 60 - you're in the HOGS. "happy ole guys of sonoma". Most of us are pushing 70. And we have a few in the 40-60's playing with us. Got me some scrap wood. Wood Flooring left overs, book cases I could knock apart, bed headboards, things friends had hanging around that they couldn't fit in the garbage cans and didn't want to make a dump run with. Those things that they put around the good wood when transporting them to the lumber yards so the banding won't scar the good wood, it's either throw 'em away or give 'em to Gus. And I tried my hand at the scroll saw. Finally. I didn't like some of the patterns I saw - like YODA. So - after watching more and more hours of video - I attempted and came up with my version of Yoda, which I shared here. I'm working on Josey Wales now. That one's taking a long time. And made one of my Grandkids Daddy - looks just like him - using some of Steve Goods patterns for Fathers Day. Anyway .. here are a couple that I've made. That I like - and - I'm going to attempt a logo type of thing for a friend of mine that makes me some special lures that seem to catch fish all the time. Any fish, any where. Thanks for looking and .. any criticism is greatly appreciated ... oooo just got a text - someone has a SOLID CEDAR HEADBOARD they want to give to me. Okay .. Oh .. and the tags ? They sell for 20-40 bucks apiece. The one with the guy on it throwing a disc - looks just like Dave - that was 40 bucks. 4 inches out of scrap flooring.

I took some time this afternoon to cut this US ARMY Veteran wall decoration. It was cut from 1/4” Oak with #1 Pegas blades. This is a naked photo I’m not sure what I want to finish it with. So I took 4 larger scraps and did one each Watco Natural, Satin Lacquer, Shellac, Semi-gloss Poly. I’ll see if anything looks good in the morning.

  4. The Let’s Ride Plaque is a birthday Present for my Son, who is an avid Motorcycle Rider and I thought this would be a good addition to his Man Cave. The pattern is intended for 11”X 14” and is from Scroller #8676SC. The top layer is cut from 1/4” thick solid Maple board and the backer is piece of 5/32” solid core plywood painted gloss black. Purchased frame from Wallmart (Better and cheaper than I can make with the equipment I have available). I have had no luck with spiral blades yet so this pattern was completed using Pegas # 1 and #2 Modified Geometry blade’s. Got a lot of good experience doing this project and broke a lot of the #1 blade’s in the process. About 12 hours of scrolling time with a lot of cussing. A Rose for You is an 8" X 10" pattern from Steve Goods SCROLLSAW WORKSHOP Website. It is another project where I added Color. Steve suggested a color pattern printed on photo paper to be used on the backer but I chose to hand paint the areas behind the cut outs with acrylic craft paint adding a little different look than his. Both the top layer and backer are 5/32” thick Maple solid Core Plywood and again mounted in a Frame I purchased at Wallmart. I used mainly #2 Sharktooth Reverse Blade’s to cut this pattern. However, if you look close I did make an attempt to use a spiral blade on the letter “s” in Rose and I quickly quit and went back to a standard blade. This wall plaque can be hung either horizontal as pictured or vertically. Not quite sure who will be the recipient of this work as a gift.

  5. I agree with Dan on the dust. I would also think it would be an issue perhaps with card stock plus I would be fearful what moisture of any kind would do to the card stock. If I wanted a real pop of color like that purple, I would probably do what Sue suggested on her pattern. Another choice would be to use the alcohol inks or unicorn spit stain which will give you vibrant coloring but more of a stain then paint if it was the paint you didn’t like the idea of. Your other option, but more subtle on color, would be to use a wood that gives you the color contrast. I recently did a Steve Good pattern of a curved top box. I forgot what image he had on the box top, but I used a butterfly instead and then used a piece of Purple Heart to line the lid to fill in the butterfly with color and to be the lining for the lid.

    Scroll saw keepsake boxes

Ben, I would not use felt or flocking to show through the top. Dust will settle on either material and will make it very difficult to clean. Sure it will look great for now, but a year down the road, it will have collected a lot of dust and will be almost impossible to clean.

    Police Badges

I've had some orders for badges lately so I thought I would show therm here as well -- all are framed to 12 x 16 (my own frames) and I used 1/8 through 3/8 on all of them -- mostly #1 and 2/0 modified geometry

    Flower Bowl complete

Finished with Teak oil then satin poly -- will probably use beeswax later to polish. I left it a bit rough because it's getting really thin in spots (singing to me again). I even had to patch a sanding hole but I doubt you can even find it -- even in person it's hard to see.

  13. Her instructions basically say to paint a color of your choice to a piece of thin plywood. Then glue it to the underside of the lid. I was hoping to do something a little nicer.

  17. I'm in the process of making some keepsake scroll saw boxes for Christmas presents and looking for some tips. I have one ready to go right now. It has a hummingbird scroll saw pattern that I will use. I want to set the pattern off with a nice background. I can make the boxes all right. Just looking for some tips on how to line them. I do have some flock. I also like the idea of putting a backing behind the scroll saw cut outs. I see mostly black used for this. My question is what do you use for this? I was thinking of cardstock. I just don't think lining the box with black cardboard would look nice. Then I thought is could line the box with the black cardboard then use some adhesive backed felt over the cardboard to dress it up. Would that work? A lot of extra work, but i do want the boxes to look nice. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance Ben This is the box I'm going to make for my grandkids. I also have a butterfly one. It has a purple background. I just need a little help on how to line it and show off the pattern.

  18. This great pattern by Bernd was the one that almost had me flicking in scrolling. I wanted so much to cut a really good pattern for my neighbor who owns a 1967 Chevy convertible that he restored and had owned for 17 years. He, like so many car enthusiasts loves and cherishes his car. I know how important this car was to him and how much he loved having it that I wanted the best pattern I could get to cut and give to him. Bernd stepped up to the plate and made the great pattern for me and then he cut it and made the video of it, that so many of you enjoyed in this forum. I was unable to do a satisfactory job cutting it and got myself really depressed, as this was to be a perfect gift. I messed up very badly and I was thinking I should just give up and flick in my scrolling hobby. Well, Bernd, being the giving and caring person he is, Sent me the plaque he made in his video to give to my neighbor. Following the chevy plaque failing, I followed with the nurse bear screw up. So, things were just not going well for me. Because of the encouragement from Bernd and several of you, in my previous posts, I am now over my depression and moving on. Thank you all for what you have done for me. I am not usually depressed and take things in stride. I just wanted this one to be perfect. My thanks especially go out to Bernd and all he did for me. 25. I would use a sacrificial piece underneath and take my blade down to a #1 (even lower if needed). If you use the smallest drill that will do the job it will have to run as fast as you can get it and use a LITTLE pressure otherwise it will burn. Don W

  41. I usually stack cut if doing 1/8 but some times you must do as single sheet if something like a personalized ornament. Couple of things I have done is given the sheet a coat of sanding sealer. (shellac/alcohol 50/50) and lightly sand. I also try and use a dull blade. Some one here suggested using your blade first on a few cuts of hard maple. Steve Good keeps a dull blade around just for this. See his blog http://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.com/2020_07_21_archive.html

  43. Ohhh Boy... I'm looking forward to this one.. Only thing is.. I need to pick one or maybe a few of my car projects since I have over 60 car clocks listed on various websites not to mention puzzles, portraits and ornaments.. I'm going to have to think about what ones have the best story to go along with them.. I guess since you said your first car was a 83 Camaro.. I'll start with one of those, LOL.. I'll think about something personal and post it along with a story behind it I suppose..

    Excalibur Rebuild

I do enjoy tinkering with these saws.. I've rebuilt a lot of them over the years... mostly cheap older Delta's but also have rebuilt a Ryobi, Dremel and of coarse the DeWalts.. now Excalibur, LOL.. Be fun to do a job similar but the cost wouldn't be all that great for the owners.. unless they was like a short drive away from me or something.. Shipping them and parts prices etc.. you'd be best to buy a new one,

    Excalibur Rebuild

Well Ray, It'll never be a Pegas because even the Pegas saws are different than the original EX saw.. Pegas upgraded the main drive bearing sizes for more strength and durability which is something many people don't think about.. They see a saw that "looks like" and assume it's the same thing.. My saw is "now" more like a original EX.. As for value.. I gave $340 for the saw .. upgraded chucks way back when they was on sale.. I think with shipping etc.. the chucks was $80.. Since then ( nearly three years ago ) I've put around 350 hours on the saw.. which is comparable to the usage I get from a DW-788.. The parts from Seyco run me $115 for the inside guts and $160 for the rocker assemblies.. So in all I have about $705 if I did my math right? lol Depending where you buy a Pegas.. the cheapest I found with shipping charges etc. was $800.. I did manage to put about 400 total hours on it too.. That said.. Pegas wasn't around when i bought my saw back in Oct. 2017.. New EX's wasn't available then either.. though somehow the guy I got this from had a new seal box with one, LOL a few months later Home Depot had them.. and he worked for HD and supposedly won it in a raffle..

    Excalibur Rebuild

Well I got it back up and running. Now I need to dial everything in and it should be ready to make sawdust. The job wasn’t too bad, I took it farther apart than I really needed to but I was also making other repairs than just the bearing assembly. I bought the whole assembly from Seyco. The pictures of the parts below. I’ll try to upload the instructions that came with the assembly since it’s just a few pages. I found them not very good because they was photo copy pages and the pictures was very poor. Since I can’t read words and the pictures was bad they might as well not sent them.
