  1. Always wanted to try my hand at the lathe so I bought a Laguna 1216 a week ago. As soon as I finish the Apostle clock I'm working on I'm going to try my hand at bowls and pens on the lathe. I will post pictures of the clock when I'm done with it. Heres a picture of it almost done. Just have the 3 towers on top and some trim to put on it and its done.

    Helped out my wife

My wife restores stained glass windows. Had one that needed a frame added. I used mortise & tendon joints. Inlayed leaves on sides out of green popular. Main frame is red oak. Arm-R-Seal finish.

  3. The Let’s Ride Plaque is a birthday Present for my Son, who is an avid Motorcycle Rider and I thought this would be a good addition to his Man Cave. The pattern is intended for 11”X 14” and is from Scroller #8676SC. The top layer is cut from 1/4” thick solid Maple board and the backer is piece of 5/32” solid core plywood painted gloss black. Purchased frame from Wallmart (Better and cheaper than I can make with the equipment I have available). I have had no luck with spiral blades yet so this pattern was completed using Pegas # 1 and #2 Modified Geometry blade’s. Got a lot of good experience doing this project and broke a lot of the #1 blade’s in the process. About 12 hours of scrolling time with a lot of cussing. A Rose for You is an 8" X 10" pattern from Steve Goods SCROLLSAW WORKSHOP Website. It is another project where I added Color. Steve suggested a color pattern printed on photo paper to be used on the backer but I chose to hand paint the areas behind the cut outs with acrylic craft paint adding a little different look than his. Both the top layer and backer are 5/32” thick Maple solid Core Plywood and again mounted in a Frame I purchased at Wallmart. I used mainly #2 Sharktooth Reverse Blade’s to cut this pattern. However, if you look close I did make an attempt to use a spiral blade on the letter “s” in Rose and I quickly quit and went back to a standard blade. This wall plaque can be hung either horizontal as pictured or vertically. Not quite sure who will be the recipient of this work as a gift.

    Police Badges

I've had some orders for badges lately so I thought I would show therm here as well -- all are framed to 12 x 16 (my own frames) and I used 1/8 through 3/8 on all of them -- mostly #1 and 2/0 modified geometry

  17. Ohhh Boy... I'm looking forward to this one.. Only thing is.. I need to pick one or maybe a few of my car projects since I have over 60 car clocks listed on various websites not to mention puzzles, portraits and ornaments.. I'm going to have to think about what ones have the best story to go along with them.. I guess since you said your first car was a 83 Camaro.. I'll start with one of those, LOL.. I'll think about something personal and post it along with a story behind it I suppose..

  18. My Daughter and Gradson both have Birthdays coming up in September and October. She owns a French Bulldog and he owns a Pug. Both were appropriate subjects for a scrollsaw birthday present gift. My Son-in-law also has his birthday in October and is a Beer lover, so I just started a project for him. My Son and Daughter-in-law also have Birthdays in October. He is an avid Motorcycle Rider and she is nuts about Dragonflys. So here are my gifts that I will be sending them in the coming months:

  19. Good job on the cut! I may have to find a pattern of my old Roadrunner. Mine was a 1973, yellow with black stripes . Love the Roadrunners back then, fun cars. It had the "slap stick" and was very quick, I won 5 trophies with it and placed high numerous times at the drag strip! Does your son-in-law still have his? My stepdaughter and her husband still have mine, but I have visitation rights when I go to Nebraska...LOL.

  21. One of the things I think about in August is the car shows. In my hometown, there would be a few official ones, which were fun. But there are also the pop-up shows that just appear at a restaurant parking lot on a Sunday afternoon. Usually some car club that meets up at a 50's diner, grab a burger, and then shows off their cars. I'd see one of those, pull over to look at the "fancy cars" (as my son called them). I kinda miss that this year. So how about we have our own car show? Post a pic of a scroll saw project featuring some sort of car, motorcycle, truck, military vehicle, bicycle, skateboard, or whatever. As long as it has wheels! Looking for some inspiration? Check out our Transportation section in the Pattern Library. When you post, share a memory of a vehicle you loved. My first car was a 1983 Silver Camaro. It was only a V6, but it looked fast. And a highschooler with a Camero wasn't a bad thing to have. We have a ton of great car patterns in the Pattern Library: https://www.scrollsawvillage.com/gallery/category/19-transportation/

    Army Veteran

I took some time this afternoon to cut this US ARMY Veteran wall decoration. It was cut from 1/4” Oak with #1 Pegas blades. This is a naked photo I’m not sure what I want to finish it with. So I took 4 larger scraps and did one each Watco Natural, Satin Lacquer, Shellac, Semi-gloss Poly. I’ll see if anything looks good in the morning.

  24. I sure miss our local car shows. Lately I'm stuck on designing cars and aircrafts. My wife will put the pictures in sketch mode in PhotoShop and I'll clean them up in MS 3D paint. I like the '30's, 40's and '50's cars and ones that are unique or one offs. The clean up can take a few days (I'm a nitnoid)

Kevin, your timing on this post is perfect! I will be fixing my friends EX-21 as soon as she gets the parts from Ray. I believe her saw is an original EX. Like you I love to tinker and fix stuff, I actually got paid to do that for 35 years and 11 in the AF fixing flight simulators. Your pictures and suggestions are supper! THANKS

  29. Your apostle clock looks great! I was into turning for a few years doing the pen, bottle stopper, etc thing. I did not sell my turnings either. I sold everything with the exception of the lathe and tooling.

  30. It’s looking great so far Dale! I went through a lathe phase myself a bunch of years ago. I turned hundreds of pens, bottle stoppers, bowls and everything else. I wasn’t selling at the time, so everything I turned I gave away, but I got over it!

  31. Bare with me on this. The top photo is an F-16 as we were coming home. It is a unit that a mentor of mine was in during WWII. The bottom photo is a cut I made of his aircraft from the same unit, just 70 years later. The middle photo is one I made for my workcenter that operates F-16’s. I was torn which one to post because the P-51 is an awesome aircraft that changed the tide of the war and I am honored to know this gentleman, but yet I worked on or around for close to 30 years. Now one can see my problem? That is why I have both.

  32. I got mine in 2017 and it was before anyone even knew of the China version.. I thought I was getting the real deal.. Mine was Nov, 2017.. But.. I also bought it second hand new in sealed box.. so I don't know.. You also have to consider the stock that the stores may have had on the original saws.. I bought my parts from Ray.. everything fit fine except the front rocker assemblies.. you can see my story in the link.. Any questions feel free to post or send me a message..

  34. I'm guessing right about the time she purchased hers. There was about a year when they were not available. Kevin has one and just replaced the complete arm assembly. He ordered the parts from Ray at Seyco. Haven't heard anything about the fit etc. I may have had one of the of the ones made in Taiwan under General International's contract . It's been holding up great. Let us know about how things go please.

  35. I am in total agreement with the majority about not using a 3/0 blade while cutting a single thickness of 1/8 inch bb ply! Also the opening of the hole in the table top is another consideration as to the tear out. Than again as has been stated, it could be a poor quality of bb ply. Search the web or depending where your home is, look up various blade sellers for smaller size, 2/0, 1/0 and work with those. Also you have stated you have not tried stack cutting, this is very easy to do and for a sample cutting just take a couple of small pieces of 1/8 inch bb put some 2 sided tape on 2 sides, press together put a pattern on as you usually do, drill the necessary holes, feed the blade through, select the speed you are comfortable with and start cutting. This works great for cutting ornaments and if you do craft shows, a great way to cut the one pattern and have multiple item to sell or as gifts if not into craft shows. Erv

  37. Carl I have 2 hawks a 26 and a 20. I've been scrolling since 96 time for something different for a while. The Laguna I bought is a midi not full size. I'm like you hoping to do both when I retire next spring.

  38. I use to make pens, shaving brushes, razors, boxes, bowls. Flat work keepsake boxes, small furniture accessories. I am now taking up scroll sawing, hoping i can combine all crafts into one unique piece. I used to sell on Etsy and Ebay, gave that all up. Love my new to me RBI Hawk 226vs. Top notch lathe you have there, i just have a small midi lathe, love it. Carl

  39. Brenda, the large blade size does have something to do with the breakout as does the drill bit. When drilling holes, especially when they are close together, I always use a 1mm bit and make sure it's sharp, light pressure when drilling and that the ply is hard down on a piece of sacrificial piece of wood, also when I cut a single piece of 1/8th BB ply I usually use a 2/0 or a No.1 blade, nothing larger.

  42. I am new on this site. I live in Clearwater, Fl. Been here since 1981. I purchased a used De Walt 10 yrs ago and have scrolling since. I did have it rebuilt just after i bought it its been very good to me. I enjoy the different post on this site it always interesting to see what other scrollers are doing. The workmanship i have viewed is amazing. There seems to be a relaxing feeling when i am busy scrolling. For fathers day i received a new scroll saw machine that has not lived up to my expectations.

  43. HI When I do my stuff and I use just 1/8 BB I use the the Pegas puzzle blades only. I would not use a reverse tooth blade with that thin wood. I have been scrolling for years and get very little break out on back side. Good luck Nrscroller in Wisconsin

  44. I understand all about what you've experienced... But perfection is an unachievable goal-especially when doing something by hand. If you want the closest to perfect that is possible, then I would suggest cutting with CNC. There is another facet to this which many if not most of us don't recognize. In every case where I have given someone something that I made for them, it wasn't the quality of work that touched them. It was the personal touch that comes only from the hand of another human. In fact, unless my mistakes are glaring, they could only see mistakes that I pointed out to them. My wife is a perfectionist, so I am all too familiar with that drive for 110% in everything. Her disabilities, along with life experience, have helped her learn that what matters in handcrafting is not mistake-free work, but putting your heart into whatever you make for someone else. Goodonya for sticking it out and continuing in your scrolling!

  49. Welcome, I am new to. Been working wood since age 25, when i got married 1st time. Made cabinets, furniture. Then the last 15 years switched to woodturning in a effort to scale back, and stop the back bending work. That is why i am going to take up scrolling and wood burning . My shop is in the basement, cool in summer and warm in winter. I will be 76 before the year ends, so i move slower. I am interested in inlay cutting, i thought that would be neat to apply to some boxes i make now and again. Maybe you can rig up some kind of AC for your shop so you can play longer. Regards Carl

Like a dummy I got the email from SSV yesterday that recaps all the activity and after reading your post with all the pics, I replied to it. Forgetting that it was not SSV but an email. So my reply is floating around out there in the cloud. Anyway, what I said was, now that you have your saw all squared away and are as happy as I have been with my 2 EX's, you won't need to upgrade to a Pegas. That saw will last you a very long time unless you just ask it to do too much. I'm happy that you are now happy. Cheers.
