    Busy Week

Along with the Jolly Roger -- this is how my week went so far -- It's what happens when family wants things made lol. Most of this is for my sister and niece - my sister's name is Cheri and she's a math teacher - so I made a black cherry Pi -- All of it is Baltic birch ply 1/8 1/4 and 3/8 -- The big round is 24 across -- the Pi is 3/4

    Big surprise!

We're having our fair this week here in Lamar, so I decided to enter some of my work in the Hobby Show. Lamar is the county seat and we have the old county court house and square in downtown. Instead of being in a building with rows of tables, they have businesses on the square offer their front windows for the show. So I got the use of a window and setup a display. They judged today...and I won first place blue ribbon!! I have to thank all of you folks also for all the tips, tricks, help, and friendship to get better at this insanity we call scroll sawing.

    Cutting chess pieces

I cut a set out of walnut an popular. Used Pegas MG # 5. It has been awhile but I think I was able to cut 4 pieces with one blade.

  10. Someone asked in the pattern request section the other night for a Shelby clock pattern.. I found a coloring page and sort of made a crappy pattern of one.. crappy meaning I didn't clean up the design and make it a actual pattern.. I do this myself quite often and don't typically share the patterns because they are not cleaned up.. no bridges and floaters and all.. I just modify the cut as I'm cutting.. takes too long to clean up a design to make it a actual pattern, LOL I don't consider myself a designer because of the lack of clean-up etc.. I just throw it together and cut.. LOL Anyway, I posted this in the pattern request and decided to cut it myself yesterday.. Got the photos and a listing up on the website today.. Cut from 5/8 Cherry on the Excalibur with a number 3 Pegas MG blade.. Not my best but not my worst work. LOL Enjoy the photos..

    Jackpot!

Yesterday a lady at the fair board told me of another contest in Memorial Hall that I should enter. So I checked it out and took two pieces out of my window to enter in two separate categories. When the judging was done I placed 1st for one entry and 2nd place for the other!!! This is fun, I'll have to do a couple new super pieces for next year.

    New Chair

I've tried various things at my saw. Chairs, Stools, swivel stool, stools with bars for your feet, etc, etc. However, nothing seemed to fit me. They either made my back ache or my neck ache. Well, I had this old chair from when I had my corner in Tony's workshop. It had just a board fastened across the arms and I found it comfy, but, my saw is now in my new workshop and the bench is slightly higher in there, so.! We improvised and Tony came up with this... It's perfect !! I find that being able to stand + sit at the same time is so, so comfy. I have just used my saw for a good couple of hours and nothing aches. !! Now I'll grant you it wouldn't win a prize for the best looking seat in the world but I love it..

  18. Looks fun, but too much $$$ for an impulse purchase. I wouldn't make enough boxes in my life to justify/pay for it. I do like puzzle boxes, and the scroll saw limits me to a couple of inches, and that is pushing it. But the boxes I like have that one large inside cut, and I don't like the idea of sawing in, then gluing the sides back together. However, this would allow me to make much wider/longer boxes, and I could keep the height low enough to use a scroll saw on that inside cut. Currently, I can do 2" x 2" x 10" (or more) All that said, if the price was more in the "impulse" range, i would consider it, and justify it the way I justify all my other purchases like this (dis-engage rational decision making, close eyes, and pull the trigger). I already have more tools than I need, so when I consider something like this, price isn't the only concern. It is just as much, "Does the amount of use for this tool justify the space this would consume in my shop."

  23. H. Botas pattern from the pattern department. 1/8" BB, 50/50 BLO, #2/0 Pike blade. Will not frame. I've stopped framing projects. I don't sell so unframed projects take up less room. Most things will go to the landfill eventually. If someone wants it I'll give it a couple shots of laquer.

  25. Great cut on a really cool pattern! They put out some really great music. How was it to cut1/2"Oak instead of a 1/4" in something? Does it show that much more depth? Great job!

  30. Hi All I am relatively new at scroll sawing. I am looking to cut out chess pieces . I am using walnut and curly maple ... 1.5" thick ...I think I read someone used 5 blades to cut one piece is that typical. I am using Flying Dutchman UR7 (just ordered polar#7 ..I see they where recommended by some on forum) . I can cut out a 3.5 inch rook with one blade with very little burn marks on walnut a bit more on maple. Results are pretty good, but I think I can do a little better, if I slow it down a bit. Any other pointers would be appreciated. Thank you Anthony

    Padauk

Can I use padauk to make napkin holders? I’m using Steve’s Goods halloweennapkin.pdf pattern and I’m worried the wood may be too irritating from the stories I’ve read about it. We won’t be eating it but the napkins will be in contact with the wood and then they would be in contact with lips and face. As always, thanks in advance.

She was a wise lady. I hope you know that I'm just "jesting" with you. We all need to make the adjustments to our scrolling environment that allows us to work in confort. If that works for you, then it is "beautiful". Scroll on fair maiden!

    New Chair

I don't Ray, I'm quite happy on my feet, it was my back and neck that bothered me. Although I have a thick carpet mat to stand on as I find a concrete floor very hard and cold. I suppose as we get older we all have 'different' bits that hurt. Old age is wonderful isn't it ? I now understand what my mother meant when she said ''Youth is wasted on the young''

  37. I use two side pieces of thin wood and two clamps. I find that if I tape after making cuts unless you clear all the saw dust it always seems to get under the packing tape.

  44. Trackman Looks great.. I thought I might be a little stingy with my blade usage. I must have misread the statement about 5 - 7 blades for one piece, perhaps it was that many for whole set. The set I am working on is similar to yours (classic set from a book of 15 chess sets) mainly for the practice. I would also like to make a more modern set with some inlay.

    Jolly Roger

A bit less controversial this time -- My sister has a play area for g-kids that's a pirate theme -- so I made her a little present -- 10 x 16 overall -- cut from 4/4 white oak with a #1 modified geometry blade - sanded to 400 with some new toys - I think it worked well -- the final picture is the original photo I found on line

  50. I don't have a automobile, but I just finished this item and it has wheels so I'm hoping you'll accept it. This is a model of a Stearman Trainer. I hope it will be a whirl-i-jig and the plane will turn to face the wind and the prop will turn. Most of the wood is cedar. The prop is from an old garden spinner gadget that stopped working a couple of seasons ago. I used a bandsaw, drill press, and scroll saw. Hand painted. I'd like to find a plastic pilot, like Gonzo or Kermit from the Muppet show. If I get it running in the garden I post another pic. Posted Sept 6. Well as it turns out this makes an awful whirl-i-jig. Two problems: 1) good whirl-i-jigs are very thin and fairly long, which helps them turn into the wind (my little project is short and fat); 2) my house is located much lower than other homes near us and to the west and north we have acres of wild woods, thus the wind is blocked. Although in the winter when the leaves are off the trees/bushes we get lots of wind.
