Just finished this yesterday. I want to thank Travis for doing the pattern for me. It's about an 8x10 and cut on 1/4 inch B/B. This is for a good friend of mine in NC, Hope she likes it.

    Self Portrait

Decided I needed an updated self portrait. I have a different saw and a lot more wrinkles. This is the first picture I have matted using 1/8" Baltic Birch. I cheated with photo shop and removed some labels that I wouldn't be able to scroll.

    Cursive font

I had forgot that a couple of you who helped me find the font I needed asked to see the finished project. It is pictured below. It was a real hit and I have received 4 orders from people who were at the wedding and saw this sign!

  9. I started off with a Dremel 57-2. The on-switch was on the side, behind the sander attachment and motor. So I had to reach under the project, around a shaft sticking out of the base (which would spin when powered on), and around the motor. Great little saw, otherwise, for how old it was and what its capabilities were. I learned a LOT about scrolling with that lil' guy (still have it, too!).

Here’s my take, yes these are very popular.

  12. They are a decent entree level saw but they don't hold up well to production work.. I had one of the newer models than this one.. ( Model 1800 with the disc sander on the one side ) and the arm at the back of the saw inside the case that connects to the lower and upper arms ( linkage rod ) was nothing but a flat piece of steel with a roll pin holding it together rather than a bearing in there.. I had to change that piece 4 times in one year.. The part was cheap like $15 or so but I got to a point where I just started making my own, LOL.. Was a awesome saw and I probably could have redesigned that rod with bearings.. but at that point I just went with a DeWalt instead..

Ha. Definitely not noticeable. I glued some tiny teeth back in a portrait recently. It hurt my perfectionist pride but like most of our mistakes, known by only us. Again, great job!

  16. I bought a Dremel 20 plus some years ago ran smooth, but continual switch, problems dust would get into the switch, air/ dust blower was weak so I added a fish tank air pump to assist, blades kept slipping out of the clamps until I made a tool to assist in tightening them. Once these frustrating problems were overcome it was a great tool for outside cuts but patterns with interior cuts became a pain as one has to reach to the back to tension the blade each time and the arm could not be raised so threading the blade through holes became tedious. It has taken up space in the shop for about 8 years now .

  20. Oh .. another funny story about one of these "outlaws" ... Johnny - I think - wrote a song about this or mentioned it in a song .. later in his career .. My Uncle was a jailer down in Mississippi - and at night - the jailer was also the cop on duty. Jails in those days - were usually pretty much empty - except for some people that liked to close down the local "watering holes". I think this was Tupelo, or Merridian Mississippi. They get a call - a naked guy singing very poorly - and picking the flowers - and if nothing else - could you please just get him to quit singing? It's keeping my animals awake. Well - Uncle didn't have to go far - he stepped outside and there was the naked guy singing his heart out .. very poorly as described - and picking the flowers that bordered the lawn leading up to the cop-shop and jail. Uncle took him in - thru him in a cell - and decided he was too naked and maybe he'd go to sleep quickly and stop that racket described as singing. When his shift reliefs got there in the morning, he proceeded to tell them they needed to get some clothes for the soul in the cells and either book him or let him go depending on his attitude when he woke up. So they all went back with him to see the peacefully sleeping naked gentleman. One copper says to the other coppers - "hell - that's that Johnny Cash guy. I went to see him play just last night." He woke up a few later and was picked up, never to visit the jail again. He did not get booked, by the way. But did pay a fine that covered the cost of the clothes he was given. You can pick flowers at the jail in Tupelo when you're naked. But - it's against the law to sing poorly in public. hahahahahaha

  21. Great CUTS .. now .. a story about those yay-whoooo's ... I was sitting in a saloon in Juneau, Alaska - back in the late 70's .. when two of these OUTLAWS .. walked in .. they would not play for us .. and it was very late .. and everyone was having just a good enuf time .. that no one cared that they didn't play - but they bought a round for the 20 or so of us in there. One of them .. forget which - pulls out a pistol and puts 3 rounds thru the ceiling. My buddy Ron lived right upstairs .. he comes flying down - and wants to beat the crap out of whoever did that .. the 3 rounds went right between him and the TV set he was watching at the time. We all pointed towards the two OUTLAWS .. which bought Ron's drinks for the rest of the night. So - the usual nightly brawl failed to happen. When I woke up the next morning (uh - afternoon - 'cause back then bars closed at 5:30am and opened again at 6:00am ) I went out to put some fishing gear in my camper shell as I was supposed to be guiding someone fishing that day - opened the shell - and out jumps a local that had decided to sleep it off in the back of my truck. I lived about 20 miles out of town - so - he had a good ways to go to get back home. I don't think Ron woke up that day. He took full advantage of having his drinks for free that evening. But - back on track - GREAT CUTTING !!!!

  22. Hi, I am new to this forum and am looking for help finding plywood number/letter templates for my Dad. Dad has been scroll sawing for close to 30 years. He's 89 years old this September but is still able to scroll saw circles around me. He has been using a set of 1/8" plywood templates for cutting out names and numbers. Last week he misplaced one of his templates. So far he has only been able to source paper templates. Do any of you have a source for plastic/plywood traceable templates? Thanks so much for your help, Bob

  23. MOONLIGHT DRIVE: I thought I'd get myself a new set of wheels, so I went into my shop and fired up my scrollsaw (after making the pattern) and came up with this little doozy of a vehicle. Sure I can't drive it around (but where am I going to go during this pandemic anyway), but I can dream. Free pattern of this vehicle.

    Wedding Gift

A girl/woman who rode my school bus from K - 12th is getting married September 5th. She also has 2 years in the army now. The pattern is from Sheila Landry. Made out of birds eye maple. I added the pin and slot joints to make it stronger. Cut using #3 & #5 MG pegas blades.

  43. NC Scroller

    Pegas v Olson blades

Ask 10 scrollers and you will get 15 different answers. A lot of that is driven by the type of wood they use and the type of projects they like to work on. Personally I prefer Pegas for 80% of the work I do. The other 20% I use various Flying Dutchman blades. I have tries Olson and was not impressed. I know others that will only use Olson. My suggestion to you or any one else is try different brands, different sizes and different style teeth to see what works best for you.

  44. Thank you! I do most of my cutting in hardwoods rather than plywood. Just a personal preference I guess. It's definitely slower than 1/4" plywood but it's all in what you get used to I suppose.

Even if you didn’t seal it, it would be fine to use. The toxicity is from the dust created from cutting. It should be sealed though. I have used it in cutting boards without any ill effects.
