    Big Thank You!

I received a wonderful surprise today. My wife picked up a delivered package this afternoon. It was a large package and I told Faye that cannot be ours as I had not ordered anything that large. I asked her to check the address. It was addresses to Rockytime at our address. Opening it was such a surprise. I have never been perfect at anything and suddenly I'm a #1 ass! Talk about being excited! Bill Palmer aka Cashew sent this to me. Thank you very much. It shall have a position of honor above my workshop desk. Many thanks Bill! It is very large, 17" diameter and beautifully cut, assembled and finished. It took some doing to create this from design to completion.

    Simple box

I added a small intarsia rose and petals to the top of a pivot box. Walnut bottom, Red Oak lid, with Poplar leaves and a Redheart rose. Got the rose pattern from another project and just made it smaller.

  3. This pattern has sat on my bench for over a month looking at me as I find spirals a little intimidating But I had a good talk with myself and dived right in. !! ...... Although it's probably not the best cutting of this lovely pattern, I'm not unhappy with it. An H. Botas pattern

    Art Deco Lamp

I'm always collecting and saving patterns that interest me. Recently, I've been looking at Art Deco patterns. Many of the cars I have cut are Art Deco style of the '20's and '30's. The Genre started in the early '20's with the movie Metropolis and came to an end at the beginning of WWII. I bought some 1/8" Bubinga over a year ago at the NC woodworkers show and finally found a pattern I liked. I didn't realize that when I started, there would be more than 1,000 holes! I did stack two panels at a time so it went a little quicker. The top and bottom are 1/2" bubinga. I had some parchment paper that I sprayed with shellac and then sprayed the inside of the wood pattern with contact cement and adhered the the parchment paper to it on the inside. I used a 40 W LED on the inside with a rocker switch on the wire. I think I'm back to cars and planes. A lot less holes!

    Happy Fall Y'all

I stack cut this pattern by Steve Good. I used 1/4" Baltic Birch plywood and backed with 3/8" Baltic Birch plywood stained with SamaN stain. Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using #1R and #5R MGT blades. The finish is one coat spray Shellac and two coats Lacquer Clear Satin.

    Basket C30

This pattern is by Alex Fox purchased from his Etsy store. I used 1/4" Walnut 10" square. Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using #1R MGT blades. The hard part was the glue up. The finish was one coat spray Shellac and two coats Lacquer Clear Satin.

    Big Thank You!

It was a thank you for the blades and for your grandson and his choice of profession -- I make these to honor police (and in other trim colors for fire and sheriff versions- I even did one for Army) for what they do

Cut this one over the weekend. Not sure where I found it, its been sitting on my "to-do" pile, taped and glued and drilled, for quite some time. I'm telling myself I'm gonna work through that pile before I cut anything new. I hope. LOL

    Compound Cutting

Just sharing. I use a 28 gauge pinner to hold it together after I cut the first side. I wanted to start cutting on the side so I couldn't use a clamp on the sides to hold it together.

  19. On a whim, I made a couple of these last week and shared the images on a couple of Facebook pages I manage and the response was wonderful, so I'm making up batches of them for the upcoming holiday season. Great stocking stuffers, feeling nostalgic or simple vacation mementos.

    Wood Warping

All woods absorb and release moisture as the humidity in your shop raises and lowers.the trick is to keep equal moisture all around the board. When you bring a board into your shop, place it so you get equal air movement around the board. The proper way to store new wood is to stack and sticker. That is stacking the boards with narrow, thin sticks in between the board to keep air circulating around the board untill the boardS acclimate To your shop environment. If it just a board or two, lean them against a wall or your bench so there is equal air circulation. The biggest mistake folks do is laying the board flat on a workbench. The top of the board will absorb moisture and the bottom won’t, guaranteeing the board will warp. A good Online source for scroll ready wood is Ochooch hardwoods. But if you order from them or any source, you have to do ad above.

    Old Loggerhead

The pattern was designed by Charles Hand. I cut this out of a 1/4 inch Mahogany panel purchased from Heritage Wood. It was cut using Flying Dutchman #3/0 spiral blades and Pégas #2/0 spiral blades. The piece has 312 holes according to Charles and it to me approximately 20 hours to cut. I intend to frame Old Loggerhead with a glass background similar to those I’m experimenting with in the two photos below: Unfortunately, none of the suitable glass that I have on hand is large enough. This is further complicated that the main shop where I used to obtain glass has gone out of business.

  22. Found this free 2009 Pattern by The Wood Aartist and could not resist. There was no words on the pattern, I added them in a Font called Curse of the Zombie i found on the dafont website. Just needed to add a few bridges. I actually added the words afte the image was totally finished and it looked like it needed something to complete the picture. It is an 8X10, cut from 1/8 BB ply with a 1/8 painted black BB ply backer permanently fixed in a very cheap Wallmart farme. Almost completed with one Pegas 2/0 spiral blade. Finally broke doing the R in DARE. This was a quick, fun to do, cut. It was especially fun not having to be tooooo careful while doing the letters. I have a number of other MC related patterns in my pattern envelope just waiting.

    Curious Racoon

The pattern was designed by Charles Hand. I cut this out of a 1/4 inch Elm panel purchased from Heritage Wood. It was cut using Flying Dutchman #3/0 spiral blades, Pégas #2/0 spiral blades, and #1 Fling Dutchman reverse tooth blades. The piece has 443 holes according to Charles and it to me approximately 25 hours to cut. Here is a photo of the back of ‘Curious’ shown on a brown tile floor intended to simulated the dark brown backer board that I intend to place under this piece when framing it:

  25. I thought ... I might want to post what it MIGHT look like - BEFORE - my 8 year old grandson paints it and the backer board. He is very interested in helping. I let him cut some stuff on my RBI HAWK while I worked on the Pegas on this. He and his sister. So .. this is what it looks like BEFORE the finishing .. I'll post it up how they did on .. that .. when it's done. hahahahha .. ya gotta get 'em interested in it before they get too old to get interested in anything, right ? I may have to buy another scroll saw. hahhahahaa. So they don't argue over who gets to use the one I'm not using at the time.

  26. Niqua is the manufacturer of the blades. They are marketed under the Flying Dutchman name in the US.

I did that one. It's nor as bad as it looks. He has a way of making a pattern look like it has 400 holes when it only has 200. He told me he hates small tedious cuts

    Compound Cutting

If I don't use clamps I wrap it with clear packing tape after the first cut, It holds the pieces together and lubes the blade.

  31. Seal Coat can be used as a top coat. It is simply shellac with the natural wax removed. This allows it to be used underneath other finishing products, such as polyurethane, which don't bind well to most coatings.

Yes you need to make entry hole on both sides. Cut one side (profile) put on clamp to hold pieces in place. I usually use the clamp for the first cut also. Makes it easier for me to hold onto the piece.

This one was fairly quick, although after I drilled all the pilot holes, I realized how MUCH of that pattern is "exterior" line. It took me about as long to cut around the outside as it did to cut all the inside cuts...and the head is about the only place with a relatively straight line in the pattern!

  38. I find it difficult to switch between blades. Flat blades are something I'm so comfortable with whereas spirals I don't use too often. I usually do what I can with one blade, go for a coffee or cut something else and then go back fresh another day. Probably why it takes forever for me to cut a 'mixed' piece , It took me a week to do this one .

3/8 ply, I believe (dragged it out of the scrap bin). The frame is 10x12, I believe, and made from the scrap pieces that come between layers of wood at Lowes, they toss 'em in a dumpster and let me rummage. I like the knotty, beat-up, rustic look of that wood, but its pretty green (literally, its greenish in color) so each piece goes through several sanding cycles from 80grit up to 320grit to get it smoothed up a bit and take the surface layer of crud off. Still ends up with a light greenish tint, but it takes a stain really well, and for the price, I can't complain.
