Dolphins
JustSomeOldDude and 5 others reacted to FrankEV for a topic
Wanting to try something different I did this 7 1/2" x 7 1/2" multi layer project, Dolphins pattern by Alex Fox. All 1/8" BB Ply. Most cutting done using an Pegas #0 MGT. Rather easy cutting except for the need to be very consistant and precise with the outline circle that needs to be identical for each layer. I made sure my cut was on the waste side edge of the line and found my dremel tool handy for truing the layers up. I selectively stained various parts of the layers witn a very light colored stain in order to help distinguish the layres while the other other areas had just a natural stain applied. The 6 layer project panel was finished with multiple coats of clear lacquer. When I do any kind of multi level projects I am picky about the panel outside edges showing so I will almost always try to provide some form of frame to finish the project. This project did not lend itself to a conventional frame and I did not see it as a wall hanging anyway. So I used simple coner molding from lowes tha has just about an inside leg dim of 3/4". Simple mitered corners and painted deep brown and then coated with a few coats of poly to protected even more. I glued the completed panel into the frame and fabricated a fixed lean back stand out of scrap 1/4" BB Ply and clued it to the back. This piece, a Walnut Dragon Vase and my Grumpy Old Man desk sign have been the few departures for me from doing the more, I would say, conventional wall hanging type artwork that prefer to do. .6 points -

This weeks Puzzles
meflick and 2 others reacted to new2woodwrk for a topic
I finally got around to getting into the shop full time again. Well more full time than it has been anyway I bought a Poplar board this week and placed a bunch of patterns and cut a bunch of puzzles. Here are the current puzzle cuts (I still have 4 more to do) drying after a mineral oil bath: There's a: Hippo, Tiger, Horse, Dachshund, Labrador, Mermaid, Manatee and a Dolphin We've also started coloring bases for those puzzles that we cut them with, so this is the 3 water bases: We still need to seal the water bases with shellac - the food coloring comes off on your hands not sure why but shellac stops it/seals it Still need to color the ground bases - grassy color for the land animals I think I've officially become an "Iggy-ite" A big thanks to @Iguanadon for his videos, guidance and patience with my questions - Scott Rocks big time! Thanks as always in advance for reading3 points -

Building a new house, that is exciting. You’ll have plenty to oversee with your new build. In the mean time you can build your scroll saw file with to-dos. Keep us up to date with the house progress.2 points -

It is ABSOLUTELY not for wimps. hahahaha .. After my second surgery (there were 5 from Jul 18 to Oct 19) .. The doctor calls and asks "how ya doin' ?" .. I says - "Man - I have been in LOTS of fights - but - no one has ever hit me in the chest like this! I'm not feeling really great." ... He laughs and says - "you're not supposed to feel great right now - we just beat the crap out of your heart !" ... hahahahahaha .. so .. strokey thing - heart and lung thingie - and the wife, father-in-law and I decided - yep - time to let someone else enjoy that bike. I was going to give it to my grand son - but - was talked out of that, too. I do miss her. A little of the fun of putting 20-25K miles on it a year was coming out of some store/restaurant and seeing people gawking at it. And then hearing funny stories about their last bike. .... . Now .. I'm the one with stories about his last bike. Remember - old bikers NEVER die - they just smell that way. Keep the rubber side down, sir, and get healthy !1 point

Do you use both straight and spiral blades?
FrankEV reacted to Denny Knappen for a topic
I use both and it depends on the project. In general. spirals for portraits. With that said, I just finished "In The Saddle" by Gary Browning. Lots of straight lines, so I used Pegas #1R MGT blades.1 point -
For any of my puzzle zombies that aren't subscribed to my You Tube channel, I just did this quick video about minor modifications to Harvey Byler's patterns. https://youtu.be/JKbhJq-Dkvw1 point

Do you use both straight and spiral blades?
FrankEV reacted to Dragonkort for a topic
I use both spiral and flat blades...if your having trouble staying on or near your line with the spiral blades you might want to try going slower.... I use the spirals a lot when doing fret work that has the lines very close together...but I adjust my saw speed to a speed that lets me keep control of the cutting best. I like the spirals best for some cuts as I don't have to turn the wood as much...if that makes any sense....mostly with spirals it just takes practice and remembering that the blade will cut on all sides...so you have to be more awair of how your cutting....with flat blades if you waver to left or right a bit it wont cut the wood where as with the spirals is does...iv been using both for years and am comfortable with both but it took awhile to get comfortable with the spirals.. sometimes its a bit of trail and error with your piece if your having trouble making a cut with one type of blade try switching to the other kind and see which one you find you can control best...1 point -

I really Wish I had the Patience To. Attempt freezes intricate patterns butt alas at my age, I know myself and knows I don’t. As a result, I just look on amazed at these beautiful pieces like this that you folks craft. I have an aunt who loves raccoons and no doubt would find this piece stunning as do I.1 point -
Must admit, I glue my patterns directly to my wood and then wipe over with white spirit and the pattern just falls off. I can't pick and pull at anything stuck down as my hands won't work that way.1 point

Anyone use Mineral oil on their projects?
OzarkSawdust reacted to new2woodwrk for a topic
Thanks, Problem is Danish Oil is a lot more expensive. I think also, certain types are not child safe. At least I read an article and that was what I gathered from the inference.1 point -
Anyone use Mineral oil on their projects?
amazingkevin reacted to kmmcrafts for a topic
Mineral oil never does dry.. It just soaks into the wood or evaporates.. I do not use mineral oil by itself for that reason.. The problem with mineral oil in my opinion is that at any given time it can sweat back out of the wood pores during heat or humidity changes.. as a experiment take your so called dry piece and throw some heat on it with a hair drier or heat gun see if it starts leaking and puddling up beads of oil from out of the woods grain... This is why I use Danish oil... it is designed to be a finish and has a small amount of polyurethane in it to sort of put a very thin protective film over the wood.. You'll get the same grain popping oil finish look but one that is designed to be a finish with a protective film .1 point -
WEll all my tools are all packed up and ready to load on the pod next week, anlong with all my house stuff. Be moving in with my son for for a while until our house is built in Florida.
