!/4" Russian Baltic Birch. 2/0 Pegas MG. No finish yet and needs a backer. I posted another photo in "General " category that shows splinters being lifted on it. This a Sam Custodio's pattern. He has a good sense of humor.

  2. HI My Dad was asked to make a wooden box frame for a family member that has recently passed away. My dad asked me to make a frame for a photo to go in. I also gave him the idea of the fish which I did for him. Here is the result not completly finished. Will have led stripe light in when finished. The finished item will be going the wall of one of his daughters...

    Old pickup

I decided to remake one of my fretwork pattern to multi-layered one, and here is what came out of it. If you find cutting advanced fretwork difficult - layered one is much easier and looks more interesting. Video of making Pickup project Pickup pattern

This is the 182nd cross I've done over time. Nice piece of oak for a pattern I really like. 183 and 184 are sitting on my saw half done. I have 92 on the walls in the garage and including in the ones in the house I have 119 all together. No idea what I'm gonna do with them all.

Pattern was given to me by a friend that wanted it cut. Signature looks like it says Morris but I'm not sure. Don't like posting picks without pattern recognition but couldn't find it any where online.

  11. My lady uses a local Chiropractor who is a real nice friendly guy. She has been showing off my projects to him and he wants me to use his watting room walls to display some of my work, which I plan to do. In between other projects I put together a pattern for this 5 1/2" X 21" Plaque to hang in his office. I used two layers of 1/4" thick Poplar. Backer layer painted Black. The small script font is Birds of Paridice Font from dafont.com. Scrollable by just adding a few bridges with Pegas 2/0 MGT blades. Did have a couple of repairable problems that you can see if you look close....on the wall from a few feet away it wont be noticeable. My bigest problem with this plaque was trying to cut toward the ends with the panel rotated directly at my stomach...my arms are really not long enought to see and control the cut. When rotated the other way the panel just cleared the saw but my light arm kept getting in the way. Gotta be more careful about the project size in the future . The second project is a slightly modified Russ Beard Eagle (#1) pattern downloaded from the laibrary. The modification was to eliminate the small frame as part of the pattern and added a little detail to the bottom to make the patten 11" X 14" friendly. Top panel is 1/8" BB Ply and the bottom layer is 1/4 Walnut solid Core plywood staind dark Walnut. Lacquer Finish. Pegas #2/0 and #0 Spiral balades The panel is set loose into a store bought frame from Hobby Lobby. I know, lots of Eagles! Kinda my thing...still have a bunch more eagle patterns waiting.

  12. I have so many projects to do, I spent about 4 hours in the shop today. I have an order for 30 angels (3 different styles) have to get ready for Christmas inventory and many more things that I would like to cut. I really don’t like cutting the same thing over and over again ( angels) but it was requested by a very good friend and just could not say no. To take a break I cut a toothpick holder just for fun. Enjoy.

    Effective but not elegant

    Why not use Blue Locktight?

  14. You are correct, it is not to set the tension but if that knob moves on its own it will put the arm out of level it will affect the tension.

    Blue line flag

Finished and sent off -- I think it came out great! Completed size is 36 x 24 finished with Helmsman spar urethane (will be mounted on his house ). I'm having fun with these but my driveway looks like it snowed sorta -- lots of sawdust from grinding the shape. The final picture is the one I used for a pattern.

  16. The tension knob on my EX-16 starting rotating on its own recently. There doesn't seem to be enough friction on the threads. Came up with a quick solution. It's not elegant but it is effective. I wrapped a rubber band around the thread below the knob and attached to the screws on either side. I usually don't make many adjustments on it so I located it a place that works.

    Picking

Les, I get this from time to time with blue tape. Varies in severity and I think sometimes humidity is a factor. Doesn't matter how tight I sand or what.

    Picking

I have looked close, magnifier close, and even presanded plywood will get some lift off with tape or shelf liner. Sanding does help a lot but it is not 100%. It really depends on what you find acceptable. I am another one who 90% of the time mounts the pattern directly on the wood and used MS to remove it.

    Picking

I cheat and spray glue directly onto pattern and fix onto wood and then wipe white spirit over it and it falls off.

  20. J/K, well kinda.... Wife and I did a project together today getting ready for our first event in a few weeks. We made an Iggy special display rack Still needs a finishing job and a bit more sanding but came out fine. Made from scraps around the shop including: Pallet wood, wood trellis' for the cross members and some old 1/2" ply laying around. Had enough to make 2 but stopped at the one for now. Thanks always in advance for reading

I have also had this happen. But then I also started sanding before cutting and so far problem solved.

    Picking

I use a light spray of clear shellac, then lightly sand the surface, and haven't noticed this problem a couple of extra steps bt it pays off in the end.

    Picking

I get this from time to time... I also always sand the ply first.. and started doing so because of this exact thing... I found that ply that sits around for a period of time will do this.. I suspect it is because it has absorbed moisture and a very thin layer of the outer part of the wood seems to lift easier... sanding it has helped a lot with this.. and I haven't had as much of an issue since I started sanding it first.. but once in a while I still get that stubborn piece.. If I catch it starting to do this.. I'll set it out in the sun to warm up or use a hair drier or heat gun and then it usually helps too..

    Picking

I suspect you have a batch of wood with this defect. Manufacturing is a balancing act of keep everything running 100 percent. Adhesive runs low. Pressure to adjust, sensors fail or are dirty, heat fluctuates. If you have any left from a sheet, do a simple pattern mount, cut and lift and see if you have the same thing. If it happens, either throw out or return. Anything now a days is complex enough that there are going to be rejects that get by inspection. RJF

    Picking

Les, did you sand the BB beforehand? I always sand my BB to 320 grit before I apply the pattern, however I never apply tape or shelf liner under the pattern. A spritz of mineral spirits takes the pattern right off.

  28. Nicely done. One of my puzzle zombies (OzarkSawdust) took my idea/thought about a folding version and built one. He sent me a video and I plan on making a couple over the winter and I'll share. Here is his video if anyone is curious in the meantime.

  29. Good fix. FYI. But that isn’t a tension knob. It is to set the blade for more or less aggressiveness by raising the arm. I have mine set so the arm is parallel to the table.

  31. If all else fails put pdf to jpeg, or whatever the format is that you have, into your search bar and it will come up with a free online converter. That's what I do anyway, works for me.

  32. if you have IrfanView, it is free, you open it there and can save it as a jpg. No problem, do it all the time when Rapid reszier won't open something. jim

  34. I have some images that I downloaded and they will not open my trace bit map in inkscape, some will. Does the image have to be in jpg in order for this to work? If so, how do I go about changing the format to jpg from something else? I have done this many times but I can not remember how. Must be the problem some have with age. Can someone help me with this one? Dick heppnerguy

    Two unrelated projects

I like both! I have similar problems with the light arm, the throat of the saw and the belly of the scroller! This is where spirals would be ideal to use, but I have not mastered them yet. I will be trying them again today or tomorrow on a project. Eagles, I love them too. I have one on my arm and many in the house, including a 4' tall chainsaw piece. I have yet to cut one on the scrollsaw yet.

  41. One of our good friends passed away yesterday. She had Lou Garrig's disease. Her last few months she had a very tough time even breathing with her machine and was unable to even speak last month. I cut these Sue Mey's plaques and give them to anyone I know who has lost a loved one. They are less money than flowers and I hear 'thank you's" from people I made them for in the past years and how they cherish and have them hanging as a reminder that others care also. Dick heppnerguy

I have now framed this and it is temporarily hanging in one of our kitchen windows. The frame is my usual Rosseter-Pellow design and it is made out of Cherry. The Cherry is a good match for the Mahogany panel.

  45. Aha! You are correct. I did just leave it as the raw BB but, you have opened my eyes that perhaps I should brighten that with some white! Also, since the pattern was not really as true to life as I would have liked, I will probably delineate between the Buck and Doe with a darker shade or wood burn or something. Thanks and God Bless!
