  1. Went to get my records at the hospital and leaving I found this wood on the side of the road. So I cut the car in it but the back of the wood blew out

    Chess Set and Board

This is my first compound cutting project. Made of aspen, walnut and an accent of cherry on the board. The drawer slides all the way through allowing access on both sides.

  5. Had to pause in my "clearing out the backlog" to cut this H.Botas pattern that my wife fell in love with. The things we do for our spouses.... This was a fun cut, lots of smaller spots but nothing *really* difficult, just a bunch of quick angle changes and sharp corners. #1MG Pegas blades, and low speed did the trick. I single-stacked this one, and kept thinking I was going to regret that but a) didn't have much of a need for a second copy and 2) ended up NOT regretting it (gotta love variable-speed saws!). 3/8" bbply, same for backer. Now to get it framed so she can take it in to work...

    Giddy -Up!

Made from "rescued" wood totally. Some red wood, and some unknowns. The handle was from the firewood pile. About 14" wide 30" long and 28" tall. seat height is 13" from the footrest. All cut on 21" King scrollsaw. I do not know the blade #--It was an Olsen 11tpi though. Pieces were double cut when possible- head and body filler were singles. Legs were cut as pairs. All assembly is glued and screwed. The cross pieces trusses, I have added for years now. Pattern is standard old rocking horse pattern; origin is an unknown. I have modified it many times in the 30+ years I have made rocking horses too. I left this one unpainted, so the customer can do it their way! Yes, I did take it for a trial --(trail?) ride. It tried to buck me off, but, my perseverance tamed it.

  7. So happy with my 788. Thanks for all of great advice I have received on SSV. I am selling it for $25. Is that to much?

    Business Logo

My son has started a new company with a couple friends of his -- and my cousin Ray Hendrix did the great graphic art on this piece -- so I ran with it 3/8 Baltic birch for the backing and the raised stuff all cut (my first mistake on this) with #1 modified geometry -- 24 x 24 over all

  9. I have loved this pattern ever since I first saw it and after Brenda posted hers, it jogged my memory and I finally got around to cutting it. Thank you, Brenda for your help with this one. I actually stack cut it and have one more to figure out what exactly I am going to do with that one. Might put it on my garage wall or give it to a family member or friend. who knows. I cut this on 1/4 inch BB Ply and used my 'go to' blade,(#3R MG Pegas) for all of it. Dick heppnerguy

Awesome cutting, the frame is kinda burnt more than I normally would scorch but I really do think the darker char fits the image. Jason wasn't much into puppy kissies and lilacs. I see three in the pic, BTW.

Dave, you never cease to astound me! Quote " This is my first compound cutting project." End Quote This is absolutely museum quality craftsmanship and you make it seem like child's play! I don't even think you have had the pattern that you were asking about for more than two weeks, have you? I could rave on and on about how envious I am of your talents so, I'll just stop here with the request that you continue to show us your beautiful work. God Bless! Spirithorse

  15. I have an branding iron that is heated by torch. Like it, but it can be to big of a signature for some things. Like Flarud stated, it can be hit and miss, so what I did is when I had it heated just right, I branded a piece of veneer several times. Then I cut the veneer when I need a signature and glue it in place. It even looks nice, especially it the back of the project is painted. When I don't have enough room for the branding iron signature I use a sharpie, or it have a signature I can print off the computer, onto decal paper. Ply it where I want it and spray finish over it. Then I have a set of Steve Good's medallions that I really like. I haven't had a reason to use them yet, but I will. Then there are lots of time I forget all about a signature.......

  16. I read the post about how to do away with fuzzies and I believe I have stumbled upon a way not have them in the first place, hence no torches, files or other devices to get rid of what is no longer a problem. What I found out, at least for BB Ply, is using the right blade and the fuzzies just did not happen. I have recently switched to Pegas #3R mg and here is a photo of my project just after cutting it with NO sanding or touch up of any kind. I see no fuzzies in it. Take a look and see for yourself. comments welcome Dick heppnerguy

Having once made a chess set and board that was a lot simpler than yours, I speak from experience when I say: "Great design and great implementation of that design".

    Chess Set and Board

Beautiful work as always Dave. I love compound cuts, cut eleven chess sets in fourteen months in 2018-2019. You are right, they are pricey to sell because of the time involved and people don't realize that. Awesome job. Jeff

    Got another one done

Looks great Dick. There will always be at least some differences of opinion! You made it-YOU get to choose the way you want it! I do like opinions expressed though, I will sometimes change or modify my project when one hits me as better.

  47. I sure miss our local car shows. Lately I'm stuck on designing cars and aircrafts. My wife will put the pictures in sketch mode in PhotoShop and I'll clean them up in MS 3D paint. I like the '30's, 40's and '50's cars and ones that are unique or one offs. The clean up can take a few days (I'm a nitnoid)

  48. Boy Ray I do not remember. I do know I got the ad through a woodworking magazine. You were able to pick from templates and then send in your signature on a piece of paper as clearly as you could. It is a heating torch and I have had it for many years and use it when I remember. Have forgotten a few times. The key to them is let them get hot and then count to 10 when applying or more as you do more than let reheat. It is a system you learn after a few. Each wood is different too. I mainly use on oak.

  49. I use a fine tip sharpie then apply finish over it. I sign my name and the year it was created.

  50. I sometimes use a medallion. The type you can get from Steve Good. It is too expensive to ship to Canada so a guy with a laser does them. (With Steve's blessing). Other things I just use a fine sharpie. Sign name and date. Most things like ornaments go unsigned.
