It's a work in progress. Still tweeking. I updated the software and things change. So I try to make it look as nice as I can. I know nobody likes change, but if I don't keep the software up to date, in a few years SSV becomes so out of date, it no longer functions (we almost ran into that a few years ago, if folks remember the olden days of SSV). When technology leaves us behind, we have a dead site. I do the best I can with the tools I have. Everything still works the same, if that helps.10 points

Two portraits of Mythical Characters
TripleJScroller and 6 others reacted to FrankEV for a topic
The season is fast approaching, so I thought it fitting to add to my Christmas projects. This first portrait is an 11X14 Alex Fox Santa pattern cut in 5/32" solid core Maple plywood with a 1/4" thick solid core Mahogany plywood backer stained with Minwax Barn Red. The panel is finished using multiple coat of clear gloss spray Lacquer. A majority of the cutting was done using Pegas #0 spiral blades The panel is set loose in a simple custom Poplar frame that is painted dark rattle spray can Hunt Club Green. I had a difficult time choosing which to use, a standard black backer or the red backer as both looked good to me. So I let my lady, Robin, chose and she selected the Red. She also suggested the green frame. My second portrait was inspired by recent postings by Woodrush of his very well done Jim Blume Pattern Gandalf. I have had the H. Botas Gandalf pattern in my "TO DO" pile for a while, but I kind of liked the background on the JB version slightly better. However, I was unable to find the JB pattern so I used Inkscape to modify the HB pattern to be similar and fit an 11x14 panel. When comparing the two patterns, I did note that the HB pattern was quite a bit more detailed and required a lot of holes. This cutting was also done in solid core 5/32" Maple plywood with a 1/8" BB backer painted rattle spray can Gloss Black. All cutting was done using Pegas #2/0 spiral blades and the panel was again finished with multiple coats of clear gloss spray Lacquer. The panel is set loose in a custom Poplar frame that I distressed and stained with Minwax Espresso (dark brown - almost black) and then protected it with multiple coats of clear spray Polyurethane.7 points -

This new look of the Village site (SORRY) leaves me cold. Why fix what is not broke. There I've said it. Let the sticks and stones begin.6 points -
I like change... especially when you "really" think about it... Just take a step back for a minute and think.. Big ol dinosaur computers and dial up internet.. rather browse the web with that computer on dial-up internet or like the changes and now use a mobile device for browsing the net, LOL Change you minds now? I understand. Getting old, I guess I resist change. It does look nice and open. What jolted me was viewing on my phone. There used to be a little do hikey in the upper right corner of the screen, like little slash marks, that would let me select forms. It was no longer there. Frustrated me trying to move around. Perhaps just something still in progress. I spend more time on this form than I do cutting. Terrible thing, I know. I use my cell phone for everything. OK. I'll be good now and be patient. You've done such a good job. So thanks.4 points -

I have always had a short attention span, always changing stuff, Hobbies usually maxed out at 2 years, girlfriends 6mo to 2 years, 1st wife 5. I have changed, my wife of 24 years Is the best thing that ever happened to me. I would not enjoy my life or hobbies as much as I do without her support. My scrolling/ woodworking hobby is now over 16 years. So Travis I like the fresh look and I fully understand the need for software upgrades. You have done an amazing job with this site.! Software upgrades can be a disaster, the SSWWC debacle when they changed to a new software really hurt them.2 points -
I am still trying to catch up with my phone. I am one of those gadget idiots. My mother was not good with new fangled things now me. Travis You keep my aging brain in trim. But if I get stuck I calling on my SSV friends for help. Barbara2 points

I'm guessing a lot of people resist change. I'm one of them to an extent . Greatly appreciate all the efforts and work that goes into the village behind the scenes. Thanks Travis for all you do.2 points -
First I want to thank you Travis for all you do for us here on the forum. I for one really appreciate what you do for us. I guess I'm as resistant to change as anyone my age (76) but I also realize it is necessary to keep up so we don't become obsolete. I agree with Rolf the software change at SSWWC a few years ago was a real bummer. Things didn't work well and the software company didn't seem very interested in fixing the issues created. As a result member participation went way down and patients wore thin resulting in some members leaving. I just hope something like that never happens here. As long a my son and grandson are willing to help me with the technology I can't figure out, I'll hang in here.1 point

Nice! I like the Santa a little better, his expression is that "HE" may have been a little naughty himself! I may have to get that pattern. I wanted to do another one this year on a wood slice like I did last year but with a different Santa. I would probably have to reduce it a little smaller to fit on the wood slice. This was my one from last year. I used red felt as the backer.1 point

The red santa and the green border work well, I especially like that the green in toned down and does not distract from the cutting1 point

Very nice fretwork. I know someone who has that exact same model car, only in blue and white. I have ridden in it. They are built like a tank. It's a real classic.1 point

I have a similar feel about tradition just for the sake of tradition...especially as it pertains to my job as a pastor. OTOH, as I am involved with a few forums, this change here seems less...well...foreign than others that I have seen updated. I have to say I like the look at first glance.1 point

I've had both DeWalt and Delta saws. Virtually the same saw except the stands are different due to different footprints. But can be modified to accommodate. I've gone to Delta now because of the price and warranty. As previously noted, if you are in production mode you will need a spare as warranty repairs take a long time. And I just found out that SEYCO sells replacement blade holder knob tips for both! Cheaper than replacing the entire knob. bb1 point

Delta 40-694 on sale!
OCtoolguy reacted to new2woodwrk for a topic
Amazon has the saw on sale as well - not as cheap though: $332. Still not a bad price. I was seriously considering the Dewalt but the $500 price tag was just a bit over the top for me1 point -
Went to Home Depot site: Currently not available. Can get HD to send you an e-mail when back in stock. bb1 point

same drill here. 3 months to repair. And that's why you need a spare! 5 yr warranty on the saw is a plus. I'll continue with Delta until I won't - lol. bb1 point

Glad everything worked out ok for you Brenda. I know what it's like not to have a saw to work with. I'll be without my saw until at least March. I have my friend amazingkevin doing some work for me. You might want to think about putting a couple of drops of supper glue on the end of that pin. Might help keeping it in.1 point -

amazingkevin reacted to loftyhermes for a topic
Brenda, If the pin is a solid steel one then you could try putting a spring roll pin in. My Delta has them and they don't come out, in fact they take some getting out when needed to be removed. You can get all sizes from most suppliers even Aldi and Lidl have packs of them in now and again and cost pennies, I'm sure if you measured the length and diameter of the original pin you'll find one to fit. amazingkevin reacted to Foxfold for a topic
Yes, a different problem. However, the 'pin' coming loose is one of the 'faults' of this machine. I knew that because my other saw did exactly the same. I just haven't been checking it for some reason Here's the pics to show you what I mean, although it's fixed now as they sent me a new part to replace. 1) tensioner - 2) how it comes loose 3) pushed back in'1 point -
Christmas calendar (my best Christmas project)
meflick reacted to Tomanydogs for a topic
That’s a great project Alex. I was thinking where can the ornaments go when they are taken off the calendar. If a small tree was scrolled to put beside the calendar the ornaments could be hung on the tree and Christmas morning the little tree would be decorated.1 point -
The stand you use, regardless of the saw mounted on it, has to be rigid and firmly on the ground. As far as saws go, if you are starting with a harbor freight, save your money and move up the line when you are ready. Delta/dewalt are lower priced saws, or save up and get the pegas saw and never go back. (pegas is new excaliber type saw)1 point

Well technically, I believe the cut is Linus waiting in the pumpkin patch at Halloween for The Great Pumpkin rather than Charlie Brown himself. Awesome work on him Charlie and yes, as you can see, I grew up with Charlie Brown and the gang both in the weekly comics as well as their specials for the holidays.1 point
