    LED Light Show

I made five of these for neighborhood children. The LED boxes are 4 for $25. Pretty inexpensive.

Since our center is closed due to COVID, I decided to hold a craft show in my garage. Where I live is a community of 185 homes all retired people. I hope I can reduce my inventory and makes a few $$$$$$. Here are more stuff ready to go on the show.

  7. This is a custom order request. The pattern is by Harvey Byler purchased from WoodCraftByScott.com. Thanks Scott. I enlarged the pattern by 10%. Cut at home on the EX21 using FD UR #5 blades. The wood is Poplar approximately 7" x 9". Sanded with the Sand Flee and dipped in Shellac diluted 50% with alcohol. Comments welcome.

It's a work in progress. Still tweeking. I updated the software and things change. So I try to make it look as nice as I can. I know nobody likes change, but if I don't keep the software up to date, in a few years SSV becomes so out of date, it no longer functions (we almost ran into that a few years ago, if folks remember the olden days of SSV). When technology leaves us behind, we have a dead site. I do the best I can with the tools I have. Everything still works the same, if that helps.

All females have 4 hands when they need them but it's wise not to let on to family members. Great work once again, both on the pattern and the cutting. Do yourself a favour, stay out there as long as possible. Marg

  12. The season is fast approaching, so I thought it fitting to add to my Christmas projects. This first portrait is an 11X14 Alex Fox Santa pattern cut in 5/32" solid core Maple plywood with a 1/4" thick solid core Mahogany plywood backer stained with Minwax Barn Red. The panel is finished using multiple coat of clear gloss spray Lacquer. A majority of the cutting was done using Pegas #0 spiral blades The panel is set loose in a simple custom Poplar frame that is painted dark rattle spray can Hunt Club Green. I had a difficult time choosing which to use, a standard black backer or the red backer as both looked good to me. So I let my lady, Robin, chose and she selected the Red. She also suggested the green frame. My second portrait was inspired by recent postings by Woodrush of his very well done Jim Blume Pattern Gandalf. I have had the H. Botas Gandalf pattern in my "TO DO" pile for a while, but I kind of liked the background on the JB version slightly better. However, I was unable to find the JB pattern so I used Inkscape to modify the HB pattern to be similar and fit an 11x14 panel. When comparing the two patterns, I did note that the HB pattern was quite a bit more detailed and required a lot of holes. This cutting was also done in solid core 5/32" Maple plywood with a 1/8" BB backer painted rattle spray can Gloss Black. All cutting was done using Pegas #2/0 spiral blades and the panel was again finished with multiple coats of clear gloss spray Lacquer. The panel is set loose in a custom Poplar frame that I distressed and stained with Minwax Espresso (dark brown - almost black) and then protected it with multiple coats of clear spray Polyurethane.

I noticed the changes right away. I don't see that the way the forum is now is any better of any worse. This sort of change is inevitable and, over the long haul, I believe the changes improve a "product". Thanks Travis! By the way, when I was quite young we had no electricity and our toilet was an outhouse. So, you see, I have benefitted from change.

  28. Hi All. I got an email that had an interesting idea. They were looking for tech help, but didn't know where to ask. Since it's not really scroll sawing, Coffee House is really the only place I could think of. But it got me thinking that I can set up an area for special interest topics. It wouldn't clutter up the main forum, and you'd only see it if you decide to join the group. Some ideas: Tech Support - members helping members on computers, software, other electronic devices. Health - weight loss, exercise, diet, etc. Recipes - share recipes, etc. Other woodworking topics - woodturning, standard woodworking, building, etc. (We'll keep scroll saw topics on the main forum) Other Crafting/Hobbies - Maybe a catchall for all other hobbies. I tried this when SSV first opened it's doors in 2009. There wasn't a whole lot of use. But I guess the success of one of these groups is the activity level of it's members. I think if I set this area up, it would be only for SSV Patrons. A little "something extra" for those who support SSV. Is this something you'd be interested in? If so, what other special interest groups would you like to see?

  31. You can start designing at any point. The rules are the same every year. 5 unique ornament patterns not available anywhere else. I prefer SVG files, since they make my job easier. But I can also accept JPG and PNG. You can send them to me at any time and I'll hold onto them for you. I'll make the official call for designers on Nov 1st. I'll need the patterns the Wed before Thanksgiving (Nov 25) so I can publish the book on Thanksgiving. I hope that helps.

The main reason I hate any changes to our everyday software is that if it's one that my wife uses, I have to go through the learning curve to explain it to her and answer her question of "why are they messing with something that's not broken"? She hates changes of any kind. We've been married for 50 years and she forbid me from changing so I'm still the same "lovable" person she married. LOL! I remember a few years ago when Gmail decided that they just had to make a bunch of changes to their platform, I wrote a nasty letter to their software engineers telling them that they should be ashamed of changing stuff just so they could justify their exorbitant salaries. And Microsoft, oh, don't get me started on their updates that always seem to mess something up that used to work just fine. Their latest update caused a problem with my PC and I'm still fighting that. With all that said, I appreciate all that Travis does to keep SSV running smoothly and if he has to make some changes, so be it. A bit of a "heads-up" would be nice though so we can prepare for something different to pop up on our screens. I use both my PC and my phone for just about everything so I appreciate knowing ahead of time when a change is coming.

I like change... especially when you "really" think about it... Just take a step back for a minute and think.. Big ol dinosaur computers and dial up internet.. rather browse the web with that computer on dial-up internet or like the changes and now use a mobile device for browsing the net, LOL Change you minds now? LOL

  35. That happens to me to Kevin. Check your blade alignment. Mine was off just a little and that's all it took to make the pieces hard to get in. Now they all fit fine.

Thank you for your lovely comments. Husband was stood on the very, very top handle of ladders trying to get into the loft and the ladders snapped. As he had his 'elbows' already through the hatch he didn't fall but he tore the muscles and tendons in his shoulder. They reckon anywhere between 3 + 8 months for recovery depending on how bad the tear is. He's right handed and that's the one he tore and believe me, I know from past experience, he doesn't make the best of patients. He's never had 'Slow Down' in his vocabulary.

    Delta 40-694 on sale!

All well and good, the problem comes about when you need parts and they more or less tell you just buy another one. Speaking of longevity, I am still using my Craftsman 10" table saw that I bought new in the 1950's and there are still a lot of parts still out there for this saw. Not all parts mind you but some, I'm 85 yrs old so its doesn't matter too much for me any longer, LOL! I still use it almost every day and so far so good,
    1 point
  40. I'll bet they are throwing all parts into production of new saws. There is no profit in repairs.
    1 point
  41. $300 is pretty cheap, but I echo the sentiment on the parts. The Delta part I ordered took 6 months or more to come in. I don't understand what is up with that. Still probably a better deal than other low end saws in the 200 price range, it's one of those calculated risks.
    1 point
  42. Having two saws is handy. When I need to interrupt a project for some reason I just move to the second saws without disturbing the first saw.

  48. When I think of October in Ontario, I think of the leaves and changing colour. We get a great display even on our street but the best display that I have seen is along the Ottawa River east of Mattawa. Most years I take that route at least once in Autumn but, alas, not this year. Back to the topic at hand: We have a set of seasonal Welcome signs for our front door. I cut the original from Sheila Landry patterns and have, since, augmented those with some of my own design. One of my designs features Autumn leaves.
