  1. This is a custom order request. The pattern is by Harvey Byler purchased from WoodCraftByScott.com. Thanks Scott. I enlarged the pattern by 10%. Cut at home on the EX21 using FD UR #5 blades. The wood is Poplar approximately 7" x 9". Sanded with the Sand Flee and dipped in Shellac diluted 50% with alcohol. Comments welcome.

I made five of these for neighborhood children. The LED boxes are 4 for $25. Pretty inexpensive.

    Bad wood? Or me?

I intentionally stay away from soft woods for puzzles - they break too easily. Your problem sounds like the blade is upside down. bb

Likewise Frank. Did not get indoor plumbing until after WWII about 1947. The change was good!

    Bad wood? Or me?

Go to your scrap pile and get another board. Since you cut it before, it should cut all right again. If you still have the problem, it's the saw or blade. If it cuts all right, it's the wood. Tom

I thought a picture of an imperfect flower on a rough cut pallet board with cracks and nail holes would help convey this awesome quote from Fred Rogers. Make sure your kids and grandkids know you do.

  11. I'm building my first medium size jewelry box. So far...so good, mostly. Most was engineered on the fly, hope I made good notes for the next one LOL. I'm to the point of attaching the hinges and latch, and don't want to screw up what I've done so far. I made this one out of wood I had laying around, the body is 1/2" Oak and the lid, and tray, is 1/4" Walnut. The parts are small with very small screws, see photo, for reference that's a #3 Pegas blade beside the screw. What's the best way to mount these hinges straight and in the proper position? I assume I'll need a dent or pilot hole to get the small screws to go in the right position. Also...do you guys that build trinket/jewelry boxes on a regular basis, for sale, think I should use 1/4" for the next box? What thickness do you use for body & lid?

  13. My son works in the building supply industry. With the lockdown, they sold lots of lumber as people worked on their homes. Now, the sawmills are running wide open trying to catch up and in my opinion, kilns may be working overtime and there may be some damp wood hitting the market. I just tried to get some wood brick mould, and found out it had been on back order since 9/1. Had to go with PVC to get done before winter.

    Sqigglies

Your problem is one or both of two things. Your drill bit is dull or the speed of the drill is incorrect. I always use a drill press to drill my holes. Drill bits are designed to operate at an optimum speed. You can find a speed chart at woodmagazine.com

    Jewelry Box Help Needed

I do think 1/2” is to thick for a jewelry box. I would use 1/4”, although some like Jim Finn uses 3/8”. As far as the hinges, you do need a pilot hole for the screws. I use gimlets. They are manual screw starters. They come in sets to accommodate different sizes of screws. Basically, they are threaded at the tip with a loop at the top to turn it into the wood to make your screw hole. Since you are using 1/2” for the body, the screws will not penetrate through the wood. However, the screw may be to long for the 1/4” top. I mount the hing to a scrap of the top material and see how much it protrudes. Then grind the tip on a grinder to the length needed. Then gently screw in the screw, backing it out to clear the dust until it is seated properly. You may want to use a steal screw first as the small brass screw break easily. You can get gimlets at garrettwade.com. Look for screw gimlets.

    Bad wood? Or me?

Actually we finally figured it out... We purchased very long boards for the first time (and last). I always eye check the boards when I buy them, and it looked fine. After having placed several I cut the board in half and went to work on the puzzles. After posting this problem and reading the responses, I re-examined the remaining board and Cracker Jacks - the cursed board is bowed! Explains the chatter and why it was so hard to cut. We went out and purchased new boards and I'll use the remaining board for drawer fronts. Thanks all for jumping in and offering your insights

  18. I checked it on mine too. Everything seems to be working OK. The quick reply box at the bottom of the forum seems to be about the same size as before. I have a feature called "Lazy Load" which basically means it doesn't download the pictures untill you scroll to them. Its supposed to help with bandwidth and page load times. But maybe it's a bit too slow? Does your browser seem to spin as if it's trying to load when you're looking at pictures?

  27. It depends on how you set it up. There should be a check mark during the checkout process that indicates if it will auto-renew or not. I think it defaults to auto-renewal, if I remember right. It just depends on how you want to do it. We have members who do it manually, others have it set up to automatic. Thanks for the support!

  28. I bought over a dozen Dewalt's at $250 to $60 a piece and any where in between. When I went from 1 dozen el cheap-o saws and then to a Dewalt my love for this saw grew immensly from the start.

    One man craft show

Since our center is closed due to COVID, I decided to hold a craft show in my garage. Where I live is a community of 185 homes all retired people. I hope I can reduce my inventory and makes a few $$$$$$. Here are more stuff ready to go on the show.

I noticed the changes right away. I don't see that the way the forum is now is any better of any worse. This sort of change is inevitable and, over the long haul, I believe the changes improve a "product". Thanks Travis! By the way, when I was quite young we had no electricity and our toilet was an outhouse. So, you see, I have benefitted from change.

It's a work in progress. Still tweeking. I updated the software and things change. So I try to make it look as nice as I can. I know nobody likes change, but if I don't keep the software up to date, in a few years SSV becomes so out of date, it no longer functions (we almost ran into that a few years ago, if folks remember the olden days of SSV). When technology leaves us behind, we have a dead site. I do the best I can with the tools I have. Everything still works the same, if that helps.

That was going to be my suggestion too. I buy mine from Cherokee Wood Products mostly because of the fact that they cater to scrollers, Chris who runs the online is top-notch and it's less than an hour from me. I try to get a list of what I'm going to be needing and then email my order to Chris. Once he has it cut/milled to what I need, he emails me and I go pick it up. Their pricing is great too. Shipping cost is the killer though.

    I'm devastated !!!!

Axminster has just rung me and said, because I've not had the saw that long and because the 'pin' doesn't come as a 'single' item, they are sending me a replacement 'unit'.... A new tension lever + pin, free of charge. Now isn't that a lovely, refreshing gesture, great customer service. !!!

  40. 3 questions 1) Since the new format change, to view everyone’s pictures I have to click on an address that brings up the pics. Is this now the new norm? I am not able to reply to posts because the “Reply box” is to small, so.... 2) Is my iPad too old for this new format? ( I’m using my iPhone to post these questions) Question #3) anyone else have these problems?
